We're doing this now because the politics we believe in does not start with expensive TV ads or extravaganzas, but with you -- with people organizing block-by-block, talking to neighbors, co-workers, and friends. And that kind of campaign takes time to build.
So even though I'm focused on the job you elected me to do, and the race may not reach full speed for a year or more, the work of laying the foundation for our campaign must start today.
We've always known that lasting change wouldn't come quickly or easily. It never does. But as my administration and folks across the country fight to protect the progress we've made -- and make more -- we also need to begin mobilizing for 2012, long before the time comes for me to begin campaigning in earnest.
As we take this step, I'd like to share a video that features some folks like you who are helping to lead the way on this journey. Please take a moment to watch:
n the coming days, supporters like you will begin forging a new organization that we'll build together in cities and towns across the country. And I'll need you to help shape our plan as we create a campaign that's farther reaching, more focused, and more innovative than anything we've built before.
We'll start by doing something unprecedented: coordinating millions of one-on-one conversations between supporters across every single state, reconnecting old friends, inspiring new ones to join the cause, and readying ourselves for next year's fight.
This will be my final campaign, at least as a candidate. But the cause of making a lasting difference for our families, our communities, and our country has never been about one person. And it will succeed only if we work together.
There will be much more to come as the race unfolds. Today, simply let us know you're in to help us begin, and then spread the word:
http://my.barackobama.com/2012
Thank you,
Barack

The next election will be a Facebook landslide....Obama wins.
The film, The Social Network has forced Mark Zuckerberg to come out of the shadows, rather, his computer screen. Since then, it seems that Facebook, which I used to like, has evolved quickly into a mass marketing machine. I am accosted with invitations to utter nonsense making my email inbox seem like a spam free zone, which it is not. Gone are the good old days when long-lost eighth grade classmates would stalk me now that that they see I am no longer a fatso however they are. We see Mark Zuckerberg everywhere: Dinners, power meetings with President Obama or Kanye West, The Barbara Walters Special, 60 Minutes, The Real Housewives of Silicon Valley, well, stay tuned for that but you get my drift.
Hats off to Zuckerberg for changing the landscape of social media, but now it feels more like strangers are tweaking my viral nipples to attend their fundraiser or solo art show, a.k.a. things that I will never attend. Since Mark has decided to sell out, Facebook is evolving into a viral version of automated telephone solicitations. Facebook was instrumental at creating a sense of community, but now it is becoming a 24-hour advertising spam-athon. There are even websites and marketing classes that teach us how to promote our products via Facebook. Since Zuckerberg commit to giving away a large percentage of his money, maybe has he gotten buyers or sellers remorse and wants to bundle up more billions in true Donald Trump fashion? We have all become Social Media Climbers and there is nothing fierce about that. There is no intrinsic value to being barraged with offers and discounts. It is beyond contrary to a spiritual path and personal growth. Sure, I hope Obama and Zuckerberg craft the best possible platform to help secure his 2012 win for a second term. But outside of that, please take your invitation to the Hot Rod & Frequency Hookup and shove it.

You can smell that foul odor wafting through the air — presidential politics. Wannabees who won't say they wannabee are peddling books. Sharply dressed and coiffed "I haven't decided yet" politicians descend on Iowa and New Hampshire. Explorations of exploratory committees are explored. Websites and Facebook fan pages and Twitter accounts multiply like lobbyists at a fundraiser. And, if it's the beginning of the presidential campaign season, then it's the beginning of the presidential polling season as well. So the horse race begins. But it's fixed. All because of one question ...You can smell that foul odor wafting through the air — presidential politics.... more

I just stumbled across this page, can't verify the truth of any of these facts. But if any of this is anywhere near close to true, no governor should ever consider exposing himself and his state to the inevitable ridicule. Last in the percentage of students going past the 8th grade? WTF?

Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) has issued a statement declaring that he will not run for president in 2012.
The full statement:
"For months now, my wife Kimberley and I have received encouragement from family, friends, colleagues, and supporters from across South Dakota and the country to run for the presidency of the United States. We have appreciated hearing their concerns about where the country is headed and their hopes for a new direction.
During this time, Kimberley and I and our two daughters have given a great deal of thought to how we might best serve South Dakota and our nation. That process has involved lots of prayer.
Along the way, we have been reminded of the importance of being in the arena, of being in the fight. And make no mistake that during this period of fiscal crisis and economic uncertainty there is a fight for the future direction of America. There is a battle to be waged over what kind of country we are going to leave our children and grandchildren and that battle is happening now in Washington, not two years from now. So at this time, I feel that I am best positioned to fight for America's future here in the trenches of the United States Senate.
I want to thank those who have encouraged us and prayed for us during the past several months. We are forever grateful for all the support.
John and Kimberley"
DNC Executive Director Jennifer O'Malley Dillon told HuffPost's Sam Stein last July that Thune was the prospective GOP candidate who worried her the most. "This is personal but John Thune is somebody that I have nightmares about," she said at the time.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul (R) told reporters Saturday that the bulk of the economic crisis is yet to come, and that a White House '12 bid largely hinges on his anticipated fall of the U.S. dollar.
Prior to appearing before the Virginia Tea Party Patriots Convention in Richmond, Paul called a complete implosion of the U.S. currency system "95% likely... [because] right now the whole world is racing to beat their currencies because they think it's going to help trade...But let me tell you, if the bombs started to fall on Iran, hold your hat, because that would be, I believe, the end of our dollar system. And we would have a real skirmish to find out what we're going to replace this government with."
Paul's "End of Dollar Hegemony" is nothing we haven't heard before from the Congressman, but at this point it's largely indicative of his decision to run for president in '12. He is slated to speak at the University of Iowa later this month, an appearance many pundits have pegged as his first WH stump in the critical caucus state. He denied that rumor today, saying, "I don't any precise plans for 2012. I don't have an organization [in Iowa], and there are some who are very well organized. It's a long way off, and events can change quickly, and I believe sincerely we're moving toward a much more major economic crisis. Depending on where we are on that might help me make that decision."
Paul has something to prove at this weekend's convention if a run for the White House is indeed in the cards. He fell hard last month in a presidential straw poll at the Values Voters Summit in Washington, coming in second-to-last behind Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R). Although his speech today, which covered everything from "getting rid of the IRS and income tax" to the "fantastic product" of hemp, was warmly received, it came after the polls had closed.

Haitian hip-hop star Wyclef Jean has said he will appeal against a ruling that he cannot run in Haiti's presidential election.
Haiti's electoral commission said that Mr Jean was ineligible to stand as the Haitian constitution requires candidates to have lived in the country for five years prior to an election.
The 40-year-old singer lives in the US.
But he argues that his role as a roving ambassador for Haiti since 2007 exempts him from the residency requirement.

PORT-AU-PRINCE — Haiti's provisional electoral council ruled Friday that hip-hop star Wyclef Jean was not eligible to run as a presidential candidate for a Nov. 28 election.
Singer-songwriter Jean, 40, an international celebrity who is popular in his impoverished and earthquake-ravaged homeland, was left off the list of approved candidates published by the council.
A council member told Reuters Thursday that Jean did not meet several of the legal requirements to stand in the November election to choose a successor to President Rene Preval, who cannot run again after two terms.
He was among 34 candidates considered by the electoral authority, which had postponed announcing the final list of approved candidates from Tuesday.
U.N. and Haitian police guarded the provisional electoral council headquarters in Port-au-Prince to prevent any trouble as feverish expectations mounted over which of the 34 original contenders would be on the confirmed list for the November 28 presidential election.
It was feared his exclusion and that of other contenders from the electoral race on legal grounds could stir political tensions and even possible violence. Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas, is struggling to recover from the devastating January 12 earthquake that killed up to 300,000 people.
The electoral council had postponed from Tuesday until Friday the announcement of the list of approved candidates.

The Declaration of Independence says "that all men are created equal." Anyone who's ever dealt with a failed product or the world's most annoying customer service knows that not all corporations are created equal. But according to yesterday's Supreme Court ruling, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, that undid crucial parts of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, a corporation is equal to a person, when it comes to freedom of speech.

Should we be worried about the implications of the recent Supreme Court ruling?
I would hope one would agree that a majority of Americans are easily manipulated by popular television media and commercials. This decision could have huge ramifications in how candidates operate their campaigns.

One of These Mornings is a portrait of the country on Election Day, 2008. Phone messages left by voters from all around the country guide our journey from dawn til dusk that day, revealing a nation on the brink of transformation and a song whose promise has come.
Documentary in material, but impressionistic and poetic in form, this short film tells that historic moment in the voices and faces of regular Americans who lived it.
One of These Mornings is not about Obama - it is about us. It's about what happened and who we were that day, regardless of what follows.
This film is 16.5 minutes long but can be reworked for a shorter version. I would think there would be strong interest in broadcasting this on or about January 20, 2009, the one year anniversary of the Presidency. One of These Mornings is a portrait of the country on Election Day, 2008. TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — Hondurans went to the polls on Sunday in a subdued presidential election that many voters hoped would allow the country to emerge from the political crisis caused by last summer’s coup.
The coup has divided Honduran society between those who support the restoration of the president, Manuel Zelaya, and those who believe the coup was the only recourse against Mr. Zelaya, a populist president who opponents say planned to remain in power beyond his term.
Gerardo and Maria Elena Matute voted at lunchtime but they had very different ideas about what their vote meant.
Mr. Matute, 38, an accountant, said he voted for Porfirio Lobo, the candidate from the National Party, who led the opinion polls prior to the vote with the slogan “Change, now.” His sister, Maria Elena, said she cast a blank ballot in protest.
“They all promise change but the one who really wanted to make change was Mel Zelaya and they called him corrupt and a terrorist and look what they did to him,” said Ms. Matute, 28, a real estate agent.
The pair said two of their other siblings had chosen to heed a call from Mr. Zelaya to boycott the vote.
Indeed, the suspense appeared to hang Sunday on how many of Honduras’ 4.6 million voters were voting.. By midday, leaders of the resistance supporting Mr. Zelaya claimed that reports around the country were showing a low turnout.
From the Brazilian Embassy, where he began his 70th day in refuge Sunday, Mr. Zelaya called on people to use their cellphones to take pictures of the tally sheets when the polls closed as proof of the low turnout. “The failure of the dictatorship is evident in the streets,” he told Radio Globo.
But while turnout appeared low in some poorer areas, in the wealthy Tegucigalpa neighborhood of Lomas del Guijarro, people waited in voting lines for nearly an hour.
“The only way to solve the problem is to come and vote and choose the right people,” said Javier Duron, 22 a medical student.

John F. Kennedy believed that being passed over for vice president by the Democratic convention in 1956 saved his political career. That year, Adlai Stevenson, the presidential nominee, had left the selection of his running mate to the convention delegates—the last time a nominee did so. The choice came down to Kennedy and his Senate colleague Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, who had lined up too much early support even for the attractive young war hero to overcome. In the end, Kennedy had it both ways. He benefited from the television exposure and was spared the blame—which as a Catholic, he would have shared—for Stevenson's walloping by President Eisenhower that November. As for Estes, except for crossword puzzlers, nobody much remembers him.
Running and losing for vice president has never been a promising route to the Oval Office. Yet Sarah Palin, even before this week's book tour mediathon, has been touted by some as the heir apparent of the Republican Party, if not its de facto leader. Right-wing devotees cheer her on, liberals writhe in fear lest she come within 3,000 miles of the White House, and the news media lavish her with attention that's out of proportion to her actual chances of a political future. In fact, only one defeated vice presidential candidate ever achieved the feat that Palin would like to duplicate, and to date she shows no signs of resembling Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has been quietly assembling the blueprint of a presidential campaign and will announce Thursday the support of a group of high-level political strategists and donors, complemented by a handful of top new media consultants, POLITICO has learned.
Pawlenty, under the radar of D.C.’s political community, has locked up some of the key operatives who engineered then-President George W. Bush’s reelection campaign — a significant feat for a little-known Midwestern politician.
The moves underscore, and will lend credence to, the emerging belief among many establishment Republicans that Pawlenty is becoming the sole viable alternative to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a potential Republican primary rival. The Minnesota governor has even gone so far as to contact some of Romney’s former supporters.
