As reported by Reuters, Children's Hospital Research Institute and the University of Washington, Seattle performed a research on different prevention ways to stop genital herpes.
The advantage of using condoms in order not to be infected with HIV, Chlamydia, and gonorrhea is confirmed for a long time.
The source of genital herpes is simplex virus-2 (HSV-2). Genital herpes is causing painful irritations. The worse is, that if infected with HSV-2, a person will carry it for his lifetime.
When results of the research came out, it became obvious that, when using condoms people have 30 percent less chances to become infected with virus.
Even though the results of the study do not promise you 100% shield, at least it is a partial protection. As reported by Reuters, Children's Hospital Research Institute and the University... more
Some worrying news from AFP and CDT today, which reports that of the 90,000 (known) sex workers in Beijing, only 53% use condoms, despite numerous warnings about the spread of HIV/AIDS. This is particularly worrying given the fact that the capital has had more exposure to such publicity campaigns than other parts of the country. Makes you wonder what the percentage would be in more remote towns and cities.
For the first time in Beijing, it has been found, sexual transmission of HIV has also replaced intravenous drug use as the most common transmission route for the virus, though as there is no testing programme, the infection rate amongst Beijing prostitutes is as yet unknown. Some worrying news from AFP and CDT today, which reports that of the 90,000 (known)... more

A company which makes glow in the dark underwear say their luminous lingerie has become a surprise hit.
LuminoGlow - led by Jan Hawley, a 55-year-old Aussie - produces a range of underwear which looks perfectly normal with the lights on - but glows when they are turned off.
Since launching the glowing lace underwear it has sold well across the world including in America and across Europe.
We don't know exactly how it works, but looking at these has certainly brightened up our day - and these should reduce the amount of time we spend fumbling around in the dark.

TRENTON, N.J. — "Hey baby, you OK?" Mike asks his girlfriend as she sits down next to him.
"Yeah, I'm OK," Toni says, and she puts her head on his shoulder. Mike thinks it's safe to move in for a kiss.
"Slow down," she says, pushing him back. "Just because I've decided to take you back, it doesn't erase the fact that you cheated on me." He looks away sheepishly.
"Look, we're going to be using condoms from now on," Toni says. "And tomorrow, we're getting tested. And that's that."
She kisses him, and Mike manages a little smile.
"Women who watched the first pilot were getting upset, angry, exacerbated," said Jones, who teaches at Rutgers University's College of Nursing in Newark. "Women really saw themselves in that video. We're really resonating with urban contemporary themes that we believe are relevant to women."
Jones filmed a series of 12 soap opera vignettes with a Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey grant, and recently received a $2 million National Institutes of Health grant to test the campaign's effectiveness.
Women in the federal study will watch the 20-minute episodes on their cell phones. Their risk-reduction behavior will be measured against a control group that will receive text messages urging condom use, but no video. A total of 250 women will participate.
"What we believe will happen is that knowledge alone is not effective at changing behaviors," Jones said. "We believe that women in the community will so identify with heroines in the story their own behaviors will change as well."
The scripts feature "nitty gritty stories of risk and risk reduction" that women can identify with, she said, adding that cell phone viewing ensures privacy and offers the viewer the chance to watch again and again as desired.
Jones has dedicated her career to reducing HIV/AIDS among young, urban black and Latina women, who are being infected at an epidemic rate. Some 82 percent of the infections affecting 18- to 29-year-olds are transmitted through heterosexual sex with an HIV-infected partner, she said.
"It is astounding, it is a completely preventable infection," said Jones. "In New Jersey, we have the highest proportion of women living with AIDS in the United States."
Jones said she thought she had spent enough years working in urban health settings to be able to explain why young female patients engaged in unprotected sex despite the known risks, but that even she was surprised when she started looking for ways to change their behavior while earning a doctorate as a family nurse practitioner.
"I had very bright, wonderful patients who would come to me again and again with sexually transmitted infections," she said. She said the women understood that they were being exposed to HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, but engaged in unprotected sex anyway; even those who knew they were not in monogamous relationships did not insist their partners wear condoms.
"We have to normalize condom use," she said.
Jones said women experience pressure to have unprotected sex and that their partners often consider insistence on using a condom as sign of distrust.
"These relationship concerns can feel much more important in the moment for some women than reducing HIV/AIDS, which can feel more distant," she said.
At the end of the study, all the participants will get a DVD with all the soap opera videos, she said. The videos will also be available on the Web.

New York City's official condom is getting a makeover and City Hall is trying to make it exciting with a contest to design the new wrapper.
condom-new-york.JPGNew York City's next official condom could be wearing a new design -- by you.
The "NYC Condom" is given out free by the millions each year.
"We want to keep people excited about the brand, because we know that condoms protect health," Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said in a statement. "This is every New Yorker's chance to help convey that message."
Officials are looking for a wrapper design that will "capture the city's distinctive culture while promoting safer sex," the health department said. The artwork must be original and cannot use copyrighted, trademarked or sexually explicit images.
The special limited edition design will appear on hundreds of thousands of condom wrappers and could also be featured in safe sex promotional material, the city said.
The city's condom is a lubricated Lifestyles brand. Its once-plain wrapper was redesigned with a subway motif in 2007, and got another design makeover in 2008 to keep things interesting.
Also that year, the city launched a provocative ad campaign on television, radio and subways and buses, encouraging New Yorkers to "Get some." On Valentine's Day, street teams handed out free condoms at busy hubs around the city, including Times Square and Wall Street.
The city provides condoms to most any establishment that wants to give them out. The health department says about 2,000 establishments such as restaurants, bars, salons and nonprofit groups have them on hand.
Health officials say the free condom initiative is part of the city's effort to reduce rates of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies. More than 100,000 New Yorkers are living with HIV, but thousands don't know they're infected, according to the city.
New York City has the highest rate of AIDS cases in the nation.
The city's attempts to increase condom use have drawn criticism in the past from religious leaders. In 2007, New York's top Catholic leaders said Bloomberg's administration was "blanketing our neighborhoods with condoms" and promoting promiscuity.
Any New Yorker at least 17 years old can submit an entry for the design contest between now and Jan. 22, and those younger than 17 can enter with written permission from a parent or guardian. The health department will unveil finalists in February and the public will choose a winner by online vote."

Well, New York Currenters, you have your work cut out for you! I think this is really cool! I wish other cities would do something like this, too. A cool thing to bring people together, get people to participate, and raise awareness about safe sex, AIDS and other STDs."December 16, 2009, 3:57AM

Criticism of the pope’s attitude to condoms reveals a fault line in western propaganda, writes JOHN WATERS
DRIVING AROUND Uganda in recent years, you could hardly help noticing the government-sponsored advertising hoardings along the highway. One had a picture of a smiling man in his 60s with the slogan, “Say No to Sugar Daddies”. Another showed a slightly younger man, and the slogan, “Would you want this man sleeping with your daughter? So why are you sleeping with his?” The billboards were part of Uganda’s long, successful battle against Aids, these posters being directed at creating a sexual firebreak between generations.
In the 1980s, Uganda was at the epicentre of the African Aids catastrophe, but managed to reverse the spread of the disease through an emphasis on cultural adaptation – abstinence, fidelity and some education about condom use. In Europe and America, however, whenever the subject of Aids and Africa is mentioned, there is an assumption that condoms are incontrovertibly the sole option.

A new initiative to encourage safe sex has been launched in Beijing, with the installation of over 400 automatic condom machines that look like LCD TV screens stationed all over the city. What is more, citizens will be able to purchase the condoms with their "One Card", which is usually topped-up for use on buses and the metro, like London's Oyster Card system.
