American cities have been ranked to create a list of the "smartest" cities in the country, the "best-educated" metropolitan areas. The common denominator among most of them is that they're college or university towns. Other locations are associated with some of the biggest high-tech centers in the country or are locations that tend to attract well-educated people who have the money to pay for high-end real estate.

How does your community rate on the "sprawl meter"?
According to Smart Growth America, the advocacy group that ranked 83 major metropolitan areas, sprawl is unplanned urban growth that happens outside the existing infrastructure. Sprawl can cause many problems for residents. In the most sprawling metropolitan areas, a family of four can be expected to drive 40 more miles per day than a family in a low-sprawl area. In sprawling places, people drive more, breathe more polluted air, face a greater risk of car fatalities, have to own more cars, and walk and use transit less.
More than 66 percent of its population lives at least 10 miles from a central business district.
⢠It's not very pedestrian-friendly. More than 70 percent of its blocks are larger than traditional urban size.
⢠Less than 1 percent of its population lives where there's enough population density to be effectively served by mass transit.
Does this sound like your town? If it does, your not alone.
Areas with the most sprawl
1. Riverside-San Bernardino, Calif.
2. Greensboro-Winston-Salem- High Point, N.C.
3. Raleigh-Durham, N.C.
Cities with the least sprawl
1. New York
2. Jersey City, N.J.
3. Providence

A new survey has found that 36% of men and 56% of women in UK are afraid of walking alone at night in their own London neighbourhoods.
It also showed that 30% of women and 34% of men have either been victims of street crime or are aware of someone who has, reports the Sun.
According to the survey, conducted for ITV1's Tonight programme, three quarters of all those asked said that there are not enough policemen on the streets.
The survey was conducted after Home Secretary Jacqui Smith confessed that she does not feel safe walking in London alone when it gets dark. A new survey has found that 36% of men and 56% of women in UK are afraid of walking... more

The Noisy Epidemic
by Elizabeth Svaboda
The amount of noise in every day life is increasing in America, and medical studies-and police reports-are showing that it can take away our sleep, make us angry and violent, and stop children from learning. One man takes up the anti-noise cause.
_____
Doctor Hagler's frustration set him thinking about the impact of excessive noise on the world around him.
"Now we know secondhand noise is as bad for us as secondhand smoke."
Excessive noise can adversely affect happiness and productivity even if listeners don't end up in mental hospitals. Arline Bronzaft, a professor emeritus of psychology at Lehman College, helps field 350,000 noise-related complaints per year as chair of the noise committee of New York City's Council on the Environment.
"Having to put up with boom cars and loud mufflers every day can make you a little crazy," Ron Czapala says. "There's an increasing number of people becoming violent as a result of excessive noise."

These passengers are also part of a great migration that is changing the world. Goldman Sachs, which has published projections about the Indian economy, predicts that 31 villagers will continue to show up in an Indian city every minute over the next 43 years 700 million people in all. This exodus, with a similar one in China, helped push the world over a historic threshold this year: the planet, for the first time, is more urban than rural. These passengers are also part of a great migration that is changing the world.... more

This sounds convenient. They kinda look like shopping carts all stacked in the shopping cart holding place.
"The City Car, a design from the MIT Media Lab, is a stackable, foldable car concept that hopes to alleviate the urban traffic jams we waste so much of our lives in. These cars?which are supposed to be rentable near major transportation hubs such as airports and train stations?solve the last mile of public transportation by giving folks a small, low-cost way to drop their vehicles altogether. The cars themselves are supposed to be incredibly agile, being able to turn on the spot and drive sideways to parallel park." This sounds convenient. What do you really want out of a city? And what can you do without? With the environment top of the agenda in mayors' offices around the world, Monocle looks beyond the recycling bins and congestion charges to see what makes for a liveable city. Not surprisingly, few American cities came close to making the cut, though perhaps in somewhat of a surprise, Honolulu was the only one that actually did, though Portland and Minneapolis came close. What do you really want out of a city? By next year, more than half the world's population will for the first time in history be living in cities. This milestone in human civilization is being driven mainly by the explosive growth of urban areas in the developing world. We are working on a series about the challenges brought by rapid urbanization and below are some ideas on how you can contribute.
If you or someone you know live in an area that is experiencing high rates of urbanization or if you live in a "Megacity," such as São Paulo, Mexico City or Jakarta, tell us about life there. Or maybe you just happen to be an urban planner and want to share your expertise. We're looking for contributions that range from narrow stories about housing, traffic, waste management, etc, to something broader like a tour of your growing city. Upload a webcam, post a comment or a link. Or, if you're really ambitious, shoot a pod! You can also email me directly at mariana@current.tv. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!By next year, more than half the world's population will for the first time in... more

KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Saturday he is in "full agreement" with the U.S. review of strategy on Afghanistan and Pakistan and said the plan to include Iran in a regional role was a "positive thing."
"It is exactly what the Afghan people were hoping for," Karzai said of the review.
"The plan to include Iran in a regional role ... it's a positive thing and we hope to use this opportunity in a positive way for the good of Afghanistan," he told a news conference.
President Barack Obama unveiled a new war strategy for Afghanistan on Friday. The strategy's key goal is to crush al Qaeda militants in Afghanistan and in Pakistan who he said were plotting new attacks on the United States.
"We back this and we will be working very, very closely with the U.S. government to prepare for and to work on implementing everything laid out in this strategy," Karzai said.
The new strategy comes with violence in Afghanistan at its highest level since U.S.-led forces ousted the Taliban in 2001 for sheltering al Qaeda leaders behind the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
The insurgents, often operating from safe havens in the border regions of Pakistan, have escalated their attacks, with violence spreading from the south and east to the outskirts of the capital, Kabul.KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Saturday he is in "full... more
