Dear Ron,

A lot of my readers are big fans of yours: on those rare but pungent occasions when I have criticized you, I’ve gotten lots of “blowback” in the comments section and in emails sent directly to my inbox. Whenever I praised you, I’ve enjoyed a veritable avalanche of favorable feedback. I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with non-libertarians who praise you to the skies. Many people beyond the narrow confines of the libertarian movement are watching your campaign with great interest, and rooting for you – especially those who are concerned about our foreign policy of perpetual war. A lot of these people are not actually registered Republicans – although some have registered just to be able to vote for you – and that appears to be part of the problem.

You’ve captured the youth vote in practically every contest, while losing among the older set and among hardcore Republican voters. In short, the demographic you do best in winning over is the least likely to be able to vote in a closed Republican primary. I would estimate that roughly two thirds to three quarters of your constituency is outside the ranks of the GOP. In view of these realities, I have a question:

What is the endgame?

Yes, yes, I know, the campaign is educating people, building a movement, and it’s necessary to take the long view. Yet I also know I am not the only one wondering what will happen in the short term.

There has been a lot of speculation, not only among your friends and admirers, but also in the media, about the prospect of a “deal.” This is not based on anything you have said or done: every public statement coming directly from you has indicated quite the opposite. Listening to what you actually say in interviews, in response to questions about endorsing Mitt Romney, leads one to conclude it’s highly unlikely bordering on downright impossible.

So what now?

Look, we don’t endorse candidates here at Antiwar.com, for a number of reasons, but I can’t ignore the many emails I’ve gotten from my readers, who are wondering about the answer to that question.

Louisiana Film Prize Launches With $50,000 Grand Prize

Executive Director Gregory Kallenberg announced today the inaugural Louisiana Film Prize, with a grand prize of $50,000. The Louisiana Film Prize contest and festival (www.LAFilmPrize.com) invites filmmakers from all over the world to create and present a short film under one condition – it must be shot in the Shreveport-Bossier area.

Filmmakers have until July 9, 2012 to submit their film. Each filmmaker will be provided with an ambassador, to guide them to find the appropriate resources and aids to help with production, housing, promotional events and other needs during their stay. On August 9, 2012, the top 20 films will be selected to screen as part of the LA Film Prize Festival Weekend, October 5-7, 2012. The grand prize winner will be chosen based on the votes of a panel of expert judges from all over the country and the festival audience. Finalists are encouraged to heavily promote their film and enlist support from friends, family and the public to heighten their chances of winning.

This year’s jury includes journalist/author Hank Stuever (Washington Post), journalist James Hibberd (Entertainment Weekly), Steve Beckman (Cinetic) writer/performer Pat Hazell (National Public Radio contributor) Brandon Oldenberg, (Academy Award Winning producer of the animated short “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore”) and Jason Neulander (founder, the Salvage Vanguard Theater, Austin TX, award-winning producer of the stage play “Intergalactic Nemesis”), with additional jurors to be announced.

“This is the coolest film contest on the planet,” said Gregory Kallenberg, founder of the Louisiana Film Prize. “It has been created to energize the filmmaking community to create the best work they can in an environment that is incredibly supportive of their endeavors. We hope that the Louisiana Film Prize will help spark a revolution in indie filmmaking in the area.”

“This is a substantial prize that could really change a filmmaker’s life,” said Chris Lyon, the LAFP’s Festival Director. “This $50,000 could help someone create more short films or help fund a feature film. It’s a really amazing opportunity for the filmmaker.”

Let's have a real debate...

Probably the most boring reality TV show this season is the Republican debates. After the first three episodes, there wasn’t much new information, instead everyone listened for nuances or changed positions. I’m sure Rick Perry would love to remember them but he may have forgotten the third one. They have really been exercises in patience for the vast majority of the electorate because they have not focused on the real issues. Let’s have an honest debate between candidates not coached for soundbites and ridiculous policies designed to excite a base fed with a strictly red meat diet.

I propose that the candidates for Americans Elect hold a debate with the Buddy Roemer, Gary Johnson, Jill Stein, and Rocky Anderson. Let’s get the different parties and their views out there to enlighten the electorate and present valid choices. None of us should be afraid of putting our policies out in the open and getting people to judge them. I even have a proposed forum, TYT/Current TV.

Former VP Al Gore needs to build audience participation in his new venture and a debate hosted by Cenk Ugyer, Keith Olbermann, and a few other worthy parties could really present an informative moment for everyone as well as real entertainment. It might be nice listening to people who did not think US territory extended across the Mediterranean into Israel or that the only way to solve our deficit problems was through tax cuts.

I propose that we hold a webcast between the South Carolina primary and the one in Florida, another mid-February, and then one in mid-March after Super Tuesday. To further broaden the appeal, one of them could be held on the Real News and another on C-Span. Instead of soundbite answers, respondents could be held to a two-minute rule.

This is a year when we need to get a broader picture of whom the electorate can choose from and with the flexibility that the Internet offers, the debaters could simply skype into the event instead of traveling because in the end it is the substance that we want, not the entertainment.
