BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
.
The Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, a leader of the civil rights movement in Birmingham during the 1950's, passed away Wednesday morning after a long illness. He was 89.
Sources tell FOX6 News Shuttlesworth died at 10:28 a.m.
"We have lost a true American hero," Dr. Lawrence Pijeaux, President and CEO of the BCRI, said. Pijeaux described Shuttlesworth as a mentor and "a man whose efforts during the 50's and 60's still have a positive impact on human relations around the world."
Birmingham Mayor William Bell issued a statement expressing condolences after hearing about Shuttlesworth's death.
"We are saddened at the passing of Dr. Shuttlesworth and extend our deepest condolences to his family. Dr. Shuttlesworth means so much to this City and his legacy will continue for generations to come," Bell said.
Mayor Bell ordered all flags on city buildings in Birmingham be lowered to half mast in Shuttlesworth's honor. The flags will remain at half mast until after his funeral.
Alabama Congresswoman Terri Sewell sent a statement of response to Shuttlesworth's death as well.
"Today we mourn the loss of a true soldier for equality. Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth was a fearless freedom fighter and tenacious Civil Rights leader. I am deeply saddened by his passing today," the congresswoman said.
"I know that I stand on the shoulders of Civil Rights icons like Reverend Shuttlesworth. It was the sacrifices and courage of Reverend Shuttlesworth and so many others that forged the path for me to be elected Alabama's first African American Congresswoman, and for that I am eternally grateful," Sewell said.
Shuttlesworth, born in Mount Meigs, AL, in 1922, was very active as a preacher of the gospel and civil rights in Birmingham during the 1950's. He served as pastor of Birmingham's Bethel Baptist Church. He was beaten and arrested numerous times for his activism and was the target of several acts of violence, including the bombing of his house on Christmas Day in 1956 and a beating in front of the old Phillips High School in 1957.
Shuttlesworth formed the Alabama Christian Rights Movement and helped create the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, of which he was secretary for many years.
Shuttlesworth left Alabama in 1961 and moved to Cincinatti to become pastor of Revelation Baptist Church and, later, Greater Light Baptist Church, where he continued to work against racism. However, he frequently returned to Alabama to continue efforts to end racism. Shuttlesworth organized numerous lunch counter sit-ins and bus boycotts during the 1960's. He also helped organize the Freedom Rides and Project C.
In 2000, Shuttlesworth was awarded the President's Citizens Medal by President Clinton. He returned to Birmingham after his retirement in 2007.
In October 2008, the Birmingham Airport Authority changed the name of the Birmingham International Airport to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

"Social inequality in the UK is rampant.
There is a big difference between the higher
and the lower income earners and the gap
keeps widening. Looting is a manifestation
of greed, criminality but also a way of taking
it on the community. They feel that they should
own part of this. They have broken through the
fear of taking from their community – because
this is not their community – because there is no community.""Social inequality in the UK is rampant.

"This isn't Project Champion any more trust me, this is Project Humble Pie." said Shami Chakrabarti from Liberty. The discussion between residents and police took place on Sunday, where the issue was raised about the 218 cameras and 72 hidden cameras used by the police in areas the BBC says have a large Muslim population.
"Residents said they were not consulted about it. Sharon Rowe, Assistant Chief Constable of West Midlands Police, apologised and said "mistakes had been made"."-BBC
It sounds like from the article, the money for the project was said to be for a 'Safer Birmingham Project', but it was later shown the money came from Counter Terrorism funding.
"The SBP said although the counter-terrorism unit secured the funding, the camera sites were chosen on the basis of general crime data - not just counter-terrorism intelligence."-BBC"This isn't Project Champion any more trust me, this is Project Humble... more

My heart goes out to North Dakota, who no longer have any items of note in their state. The KVLY-TV mast, was the world's tallest structure, until today's opening of Burj Khalifa (formerly Burj Dubai.) At 2,717 feet, it's the tallest man-made structure EVER. That being said, I've got a gripe here:
Why is everyone so excited about the tallest building in the world. Shouldn't we be focused on more important things? Namely the COOLEST building in the world? These are some potential candidates:
Jogno, Seoul - This building is so awesome. It looks like a regular building that is being attacked by a space creature. This would be the perfect disguise, if space creatures actually attack Seoul.
30 St Mary Axe, London - This building is nicknamed The Gherkin. A gherkin is a type of pickle. Pickles are a cool condiment. Ergo this is a cool building.
Guggenheim, Bilbao - Great design, obviously. More different than anything you've ever seen (unless you've every other Gehry building.) Why is this cool? Because any cool person who just got back from Spain, will go on endlessly about how cool this building is. As I am a sucker for circular reasoning, I'm going to have to agree with them.
Selfridges, Birmingham - Inside it's a department store, outside it looks like a vacuum cleaner. And as your OCD friend says, nothing is cooler than a clean room.
Atomium, Brussels - Who doesn't remember the 1958 Brussels World Fair? This structure is so cool, because it looks like it was built in the future. Today, we live in the future, and our buildings don't even look this cool. Which makes this building cooler than the future it predicted.
Kingdom Centre, Riyadh - This the 45th tallest building in the world, but remains the only building that reminds me of opening beer bottles. I bet this would be a painful daily reminder, if you were an alcoholic living in Saudi Arabia, where beer is outlawed.
Seattle Central Library - Yes, I am impressed by the unorthodox Koolhaas design. Yes, I think this is a great use of public space. But this building is really cool, because once I was walking around Seattle and I had to poop. Their bathrooms are open to the public, and pretty clean.
Do you have any other suggestions for world's coolest buildings? My heart goes out to North Dakota, who no longer have any items of note in their... more

Polling cards issued by Birmingham City Council spelt the name of the city wrong.
Last week they sent out cards with last years election date printed on only to follow up their mistake but spelling the name of their own city wrong.
A second set of polling cards later arrived on doormats with the correct deadline for this year's local election of April 29, 2010 - but missing the 'h' in Birmingham.
A list of instructions also stated: "Make it is not left where someone else can pick it up" - leaving out the word "sure".

Wishful thinking from Ch Supt Tom Coughlan who says 'Street gangs in Birmingham will be eradicated within two to three years'
Working with communities and helping youngsters early on are part of the successful approach, he said.
But critics said the statement is naive and "not grounded in reality".
Mr Coughlan said in recent years police had seen the emergence of more, smaller gangs but with affiliation to two of Birmingham's more notorious gangs, the Burger Bar Boys and Johnson Crew.
He said the force tries to tackle individuals and their behaviour with a "carrot and stick" approach by offering them support to make more positive choices or face the prospect of long jail sentences.
When is someone going to tackle the thieving gang members we call our government?
