"States Rights" strategy to end choice

The argument of Ron Paul supporters that he is not anti-choice, but that he "only" wants to leave it to the states, is disingenuous at best. Women's right to control over their own bodies and reproduction is the most basic and important right we have. Nobody, no level of government should be allowed to overturn that right. Why not just overturn all civil rights, federally, and let states discriminate to whatever extent they choose?. Anti-choicers know well, that the day that Roev Wade gets overturned, many states have laws that are all ready to enforce, many of which are so draconian and barbaric, that no exceptions will be allowed for the life or health of the woman. With the Christian Taliban now controlling the supreme court, challenges to these laws will probably fail. There will be huge swaths of the country where women will bleed their lives out on bathroom floors. But the right wing christo-fascists women haters don't really care.
Look, if you don't like abortion, don't have one. The argument that Ron Paul is a doctor and has delivered babies is irrelevant. There are plenty of doctors (eg Bill Frist) who let their religious fanatic concern for fertilized eggs over-rule their concern for women.
Young people really need to look at the types of systems where women didn't get to control their own reproduction. Where were they the victims of forced birth or sterilization? (Nazi Germany, Romania under Ceausescu, Chile under Pinochet are all past examples of the worst dictatorships where abortion was strictly outlawed). Do you want to emulate that? You don,t have to look at the past to see the damage that anti-choice policies do to women. In Latin America today, 5,000 women die each year because of these policies.
It's time to get past the legalistic nit-picking arguments of states rights vs federal laws vs tax payers prerogatives. The real question is whether women's rights to control their bodies are going to be subordinated to the religious interpretations of those who believe that a woman's life is worth no more than that of a fertilized egg. That is called theocracy.

Ron Paul Is Anti-Choice

I've been seeing Ron Paul supporters all over progressive blogs, and they had a booth at the anti-war demo in L.A. on 10/27. Along with Paul's libertarian (dog-eat dog, law of the jungle capitalism) beliefs, he is staunchly against women's right to choose. When I confronted the supporters at the demo with this fact, one first tried to deny it, and some others tried to defend it. It seems that Paul is against government regulation in everything except women's right to control over their own bodies. But, of course, I was told that Paul supports the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for everyone, including the "unborn". Which amounts to the valuing of the liberties of embryos over the lives of women, since both lives are inextricably tied during pregnancy. At the end of the day, except for his opposition to the Iraq war, Paul is at least as bad as all the other right wing theocratic extremists who would send us back to the bad old days before Roe v Wade. I was in my teens during that time, and trust me, you would not want to go back there. It was a police state for women, and we lived in great fear of being trapped in a pregnancy that could ruin our lives.Unfortunately, Paul is getting some support from "liberals", who think that women who insist on their own human rights are somehow detracting from more important issues. the tendency to be willing to throw women under the bus for various other priorities was also a tendency in the 1960's and 1970's. This is unacceptable. Look at the countries where abortion is illegal. Either women are forced to go outside the country (eg,Ireland), or face a n extensive network of police repression (eg, El Salvador). Think it can't happen here? In 1971, a friend of mine went to Mexico to get an abortion in a clinic that was paying off the police , since abortion was illegal there as well. She got a serious infection there, and while she was recovering here in the hospital, she found herself being interrogated and threatened in her hospital room by the police. Futhermore, women died by the thousands from illegal abortions.
Finally, it will be up to the people, not some politician savior to change things in this country. We should never,never be willing to sacrifice the basic rights of a segment of the population (women are @ 51%, some segment!) in hopes that a politician will make concessions on other issues.
