Disadvantaged turn to disobedience in US

Caught in the eye of the financial crisis, underprivileged Americans have begun seeking ways to subvert system inequality by turning to the new tactic of economic disobedience.
Researchers and activists are documenting that wages in the US have been dropping while benefits and pensions are being cut. In the face of this, some have turned to a different form of protest that does not entail carrying placards or statement-making arrests. This form of resistance is happening in places hardly visible.

In poor neighborhoods in New York City, some residents organize to raise a little money to buy subway cards offering unlimited rides, and swipe as many people in as they can to give them a free ride.

For Ollie, one of the activists who organizes this form of disobedience, most importantly it is a response to an economic system that he sees as unfair.

"Taxes are cut for wealthy people and there are bailouts for banks and none of it reaches people in this neighborhood, and we think that is wrong," Ollie said.

“I think fundamentally it is a neighborhood of immigrants and it is always been that way – a neighborhood that has never had much of a political voice. If they are not going to bail us out this is what we'll do to bail ourselves out,” he states.

Lisa Dodson, an American sociologist, found this subversion of the system is happening across the country. However, she also discovered that the practice extends to middle-class businesses, where managers break rules to help their employees.

“These were managers who felt that the people working for them – doing their jobs, being responsible – were still unable to take care of their family," Dodson, from Boston College, described.

In her research, Dodson found grocery store managers sending bags of food home with workers, fast food managers padding paychecks with overtime wages. Though she said most of these managers were generally opposed to breaking rules, they felt their actions were justified by the circumstances.

“Ignoring the fact that people who are working very hard for you are unable to feed their children…in the minds of some people at least, that has become a bigger wrong," Dodson added.Caught in the eye of the financial crisis, underprivileged Americans have begun... more

Vice President Joe Biden Laughing Stock

Vice presidents have historically played the fool to U.S. presidents, and Vice President Joe Biden is quietly proving to be cast better than most Hollywood producers could dream.

In limited media coverage, the vice president announced a milestone of 200,000 homes being weatherized with Troubled Asset and Relief Program funds on a trip to Manchester, New Hampshire last week. Didn’t hear about it? Neither did hardly anybody else even though the White House announced the event with all the pomp and circumstance it gives major news events, receiving very little media coverage.

Perhaps that’s because more than 7.5-million Americans have lost their homes to foreclosure, and less than 500,000 have received mortgage modifications through the president’s Making Home Affordable modification program. The event occurred on the same day President Barack Obama was playing golf ironically with his banking buddy. There hardly seems to be any appetite for homes being weatherized when millions are being kicked out of theirs.

“Thanks to the Recovery Act, thousands of construction workers across the country are now on the job making energy-saving home improvements that will save working families hundreds of dollars a year on their utility bills,” the vice president told a small crowd in Manchester. “From replacing windows and doors to adding insulation, these are small changes that are making a big difference for American workers, manufacturers and consumers.

“We’ve hit the accelerator on the weatherization program, making over 200,000 homes more energy-efficient already, and are now full speed ahead to meet our original target of weatherizing 600,000 homes nationwide.”

Biden visited Manchester, where the “DuPont family," no doubt distantly related to one of the richest families in America is expected to save over $600 a year on their utility bills once their weatherization project is completed, according to the White House. The news release issued by the White House went on to say that New Hampshire (being one of the coldest states) has been a leader in the federal weatherization program with more than 1,000 homes that have been re-insulated since June

After ramping up last year, the Weatherization Assistance Program is now weatherizing homes at about 25,000 a month. The White House Making Home Affordable plan intended to modify between four and five million homes when it was originally launched 20 months ago is responsible for less than 500,000 mortgage modifications, a figure that critics of the plan find laughable.

In fairness, the weatherization program is credited with creating thousands of jobs, according to the White House, supporting 13,000 jobs in the second quarter of the year, including 120 new jobs in New Hampshire. Maybe Biden should have made a point of that as he sells the Obama administration’s program across the country and left the DuPonts out of the picture.

Senior Republican Ken Mehlman comes out as gay

One of the key architects of the Bush-era Republican election machine that exploited anti-gay prejudices to motivate its conservative base has disclosed that he is gay and is lobbying to legalise same-sex marriage.

"It's taken me 43 years to get comfortable with this part of my life," said Ken Mehlman, a former chairman of the Republican national committee and the manager of George Bush's 2004 presidential campaign, in an interview published on the Atlantic's website.

Mehlman's revelation makes him the most senior figure in the Republican party to publicly identify himself as gay. As a member of Bush's inner circle, Mehlman would have been party to the agenda of hostility towards gay and lesbian rights that the Republicans adopted. It was designed to draw conservative and religious supporters out to vote.

Mehlman said he was aware that Karl Rove, Bush's chief political adviser, worked to place anti-gay initiatives and referendums on election ballots in 2004 and 2006 to help the party, a claim Rove has hotly denied.

While Mehlman expressed his regret at Republican tactics during his tenure, some gay activists were angry with him. Mike Rogers, who attempted to out Mehlman and a number of other politicians, wrote on his blog that Bush's 2004 election campaign was "the most homophobic national campaign in history. That campaign was run by one of the nation's worst closested individuals, Ken Mehlman."

Rogers said he wanted to hear Mehlman apologise for the damage he helped cause. "Ken Mehlman is horribly homophobic and no matter how orchestrated his coming out is, our community should hold him accountable for his past," he said.

Other critics pointed to recent political donations by Mehlman to Republicans opposed to gay marriage or to revoking the "don't ask, don't tell" policy barring homosexuals serving in the US military. In 2010, Mehlman's donations include $2,000 to the conservative Idaho senator Mike Crapo, who voted for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

"Mehlman is following the same line he touted in 2004 and 2006 as a major Republican party power leader: support anti-gay politicians who are all too comfortable demonising [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] people for some votes," said Michael Jones, of change.org.

Others welcomed Mehlman's declaration that he was taking an active role in the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the group behind challenges to California's Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage. Chad Griffin, an activist against Proposition 8, said Mehlman had made a great contribution. "When we achieve equality, he will be one of the people to thank for it," Griffin told the Atlantic.

Liz Mair, a Republican blogger and consultant, said: "Ken Mehlman single-handedly has probably helped move the country, and the Republican party, in a more gay-friendly and equality-minded direction."
