Two boys who were found guilty of the attempted rape of an eight-year-old girl in west London have lost their appeals against their convictions.
Three Court of Appeal judges in London dismissed the appeals brought by the pair, who are both now 11.
The boys were cleared of rape but found guilty of attempted rape at the Old Bailey on 24 May.
The boys had denied assaulting the girl and their lawyers claimed they were just being naughty or playing a game.
The Old Bailey trial heard the girl was attacked close to her home last October.

“Fear/Love” is a new short film directed by the veteran English street artist and urban videographer Rob Chiu. The film was made in collaboration with an urban youth program called the I Care Revolution, which encompasses a multitude of talented artists working together to empower young people to make a difference in the lives of others.
Set against the harsh backdrop of inner city London, “Fear/Love” interweaves the lives of three adolescents who never really meet each other, but whose actions intersect and interpenetrate as they struggle with who they are, who they want to be and who they are becoming. Their lives enact the central quest for the ever-evasive heuristic sense of identity, whether that means not knowing your identity, being ashamed of who you are, trying to become someone else or looking for acceptance.
Their intertwining journeys take them down paths mixing visions of potential identity with yearnings for love, wishes for intimacy that are inevitably thwarted by their fears of others. Ultimately, decadent overindulgence gives rise to self-destructive acts, leading up to a horrible event.
This piece includes colorful high-resolution photographs, as well as the remarkable and timely short film.

“Lapse” is a harrowing short film by the Australian filmmaker Scott Alexander. The film transports viewers to the darkly sinister world of after-hours at a large, high-security inpatient psychiatric institution. An on-call agency cleaning lady accidentally loses her identification card and then becomes lost in the hospital’s labyrinth of gloomy hallways. Her plight goes from bad to tragic, as the film becomes a heart-rending exploration of the loss of personal identity, as well as the debilitating demise of control with which we are all confronted when unable to communicate with or to others.
The film stands as a chilling metaphor for the devastating contemporary plight of ever-growing numbers of people who have been rendered invisible by unbearable poverty, the suffering of chronic illnesses, excessively complicated political bureaucracies, and the vast powers of hugely wealthy financial institutions that use their forces to strangle both the poor and common working persons.
“Lapse” confronts the viewer with deeply agonizing images and issues, which undoubtedly will make you want to look away. But please don’t.
This piece includes a number of color photographs, as well as the decisively urgent short film, “Lapse.”

A daring Swedish art student questioning race and identity by breeding a hybrid frog.
As Stockholm's art and design schools prepare to open their doors for annual graduation shows, there are already ripples of exciting suggesting that this year holds many delights for the viewer. Last year the city was outraged at the work of Konstfack student Anna Odell, whose video work documented her own fake suicide attempt.
This year however, much of the buzz is as a result of clever thinking instead of hyperbole. Linda Shamma Östrand is a student at Konstfack whose cerebral work takes in an exploration of mixed cultural identity or, in her words, the notions of being a hybrid. The vehicle demonstrating her chosen topic is her self-bred hybrid frog (pictured top), Oophaga vicentei x Oophaga pumilio (pictured below left and right). The frog's scientific name contains the "x" to indicate that it is a hybrid variety with the names on either side denoting the species of its origin.
"As a child of parents from different countries, I am always compelled to describe my parents' origin instead of my own when people ask me where I come from," Östrand explains on her mini-site. "It led me to wonder whether I am bearing a seemingly unknown problem. By breeding a hybrid fertile frog and simultaneously writing a diary of reflections in my everyday life, I am exploring hybrid disciplines in an attempt to understand the hybrid concept," she clarifies.
Some critics argue that emerging students are losing their poignancy and relevance due to aspirations of grandeur and ego-driven projects. Through her unique frog and inward-looking questioning of identity, Östrand has given reason for the viewer to talk about her conceptual, didactic art without damning its visual medium.A daring Swedish art student questioning race and identity by breeding a hybrid frog.... more
