Dark Night Of The Soul is the album and the songs were written by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous), though the myriad singers featured on each track also had a big hand in composing and producing the work. The album was initially going to be packaged with a book of photos taken by David Lynch. But now there's word that the music may never be officially released at all.
An unnamed spokesperson for Danger Mouse says that "due to an ongoing dispute with EMI" the book of photographs will "now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: 'For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.'" When contacted, EMI declined to comment and wouldn't confirm whether the label is even involved in the project.
You can order the book, sans music, from the official Dark Night Of The Soul Web site. In the meantime, you can hear the entire album on NPR Music as an Exclusive First Listen.Dark Night Of The Soul is the album and the songs were written by Danger Mouse and... more

The Shins are making their fourth album, but with two different members from the original group. Frontman James Mercer has replaced keyboardist Marty Crandall and drummer Jesse Sandoval, who have been with the band from the start, with Fruit Bats bassist Ron Lewis and Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer. He says it's an aesthetic decision and that he needed other musicians to deliver the up-tempo sound he wants for the new record. The album won't be out for a while, but Mercer says he's already got 30 songs written, all of which move away from the band's signature melancholy sound. The Shins are making their fourth album, but with two different members from the... more

An interview with director Sacha Gervasi about his documentary, ANVIL! THE STORY OF ANVIL.
I’ve never been a major metal-head — my musical tastes in the late seventies/early eighties skittered between Genesis and Elvis Costello — so the likes of a seminal Canadian metal band, formed by Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner, never came to my notice. Given their present obscurity, the glaring ubiquity of Spinal Tap (whose members are presently touring with an “unplugged” version of their music), and the spooky parallels between the two, I was initially dubious about the reality of the band. A few minutes watching ANVIL! swept all doubts away: These guys are for real, and their story makes for a very entertaining documentary.
I got to spend an engaging few minutes with Gervasi, in which we talked about his uncommon history with Anvil, the trials of shooting on the road, and what he has planned next.An interview with director Sacha Gervasi about his documentary, ANVIL! THE STORY OF... more

In response to Esquire's list of albums every man should own, the bloggers over at Bitch Buzz compiled a list for us ladies. "It would celebrate female talent. It would celebrate female taste. It would acknowledge the mainstream and the eclectic. It would be include albums to dance to, to cry to, to….y’know to. It would be the music that is the soundtrack to our lives, that we actually listen to and that we think is good." I must say I think they did a much better job than the guys at Esquire. Bitch Buzz's list includes recent albums, which was something I thought the Esquire list lacked. What do you think? Did they nail it or is there something missing? In response to Esquire's list of albums every man should own, the bloggers over... more

A quick lookup on Google throws up at least five 'Ross The Boss’ ranging from a middleweight boxer through a hip hop DJ and a painter but the original was playing heavy metal and hard punk thirty years ago.
After bass duties with The Dictators he helped put Manowar together and grew from a Sabbath support act to one of the leading lights of the early US Metal scene.
So he’s got the history but has he still got the chops?
From the cover, with an Eagle flying in to a battleground with an axe in its talons, to the song titles – 'Blood Of Knives’, 'Death & Glory’, 'May The Gods Be With You’ – this is either a corny pastiche of heavy metal by an old hack living on past glories or it’s a stunning album by one of the fathers of metal with all the power and passion he ever had laid out before the listener and waiting for the new acolytes to take up his cause.
Actually, no question. From the opening guitar riff of 'I.L.H’ and the pounding drums of Matthias Mayer on 'Blood Of Knives’ this is heart lifting metal that sets the pulses racing and almost had me idiot dancing in front of my PC. This is loaded with great melodies and rhythms and some of the most uplifting rock I’ve heard this year.
The guitar work throughout is classic metal riffery and chimes and Patrick Fuchs vocals in the Bruce Dickinson or Rob Halford vein are perfect.
This is the music that gave metal its name originally – sharp as a blade and hard as sheet steel.
It is odd that in the same week that G 'n’ R finally released the heartless and out of date toot of 'Chinese Democracy’ I was finally able to get my hands on an album that harks back a lot further but has a freshness and power that Axl Rose can only dream of.
There are touches of Iron Maiden in the sound as well as Blue Oyster Cult and even Priest but the real heart of this is the best album that Manowar never made.A quick lookup on Google throws up at least five 'Ross The Boss’ ranging... more

Folie A Deux is the latest work of art from pop punk kings Fall Out Boy. Famous for their catchy lyrics and equally likeable tunes they live up to the tradition on this album.
Having pushed the release date back by a month not to interfere with presidential elections, Foile A Deux is a loud, outspoken record but differs from the Chicago quartet’s previous releases. This time the songs are not about the highs and lows of bassist Peter Wentz but are written about fictional characters as well as other members of the band.
The album flaunts Patrick Stump’s vocals especially on tracks such as 'What A Catch, Donnie’ and 'Headfirst Slide Into Coopestown On A Bad Bet’. 'I Don’t Care’ is guaranteed to be a hit at live shows with the chorus being perfect for sing-along’s. The guitar riffs are attractive and will leave FOB fanatics gagging for more.
That’s just it though, Folie A Deux is going to be popular with die hard fans, fans who will love them regardless. But Fall Out Boy fail to bring something new to the table this time, unlike previous albums where it is easy to see the band have matured and progressed, Folie A Deux lacks originality. The only thing that has grown are the band’s contacts with artists such as Debbie Harry and Elvis Costello appearing on the album.
Folie A Deux will either tickle your fancy or make you run a mile. Marmite anyone?Folie A Deux is the latest work of art from pop punk kings Fall Out Boy. Famous for... more

Back in the mists of time Jefferson Airplane were one of the more overtly political of the San Francisco bands and a great deal of their music bordered on folk as well as the psychedelic sounds they were famous for. When they 'evolved’ into Jefferson Starship and then into Starship they lost much of the political and social bias they had started out with.
And so we are into the 21st Century and Paul Kantner and David Freiberg have got their shit back together and delivered the folk album that Airplane always wanted to. The songs are stirring and militant and using musicians like David LaFlamme, Jack Casady, Marty Balin guarantees that the music will be delivered properly. There is a a great breadth of styles in evidence as well as some surprising selections – Brendan Behan’s 'Royal Canal’ for instance and a magnificent mashup of Marley's 'Redemption Song' and Lennon's 'Imagine'.
Cathy Richardson does a great job of not being Grace Slick and the strong emphasis on vocal performances get the core of the songs over to the listener as the writers intended.
Mixing in traditional numbers such as 'Follow The Drinking Gourd’ with songs by Dylan (Chimes Of Freedom) or Phil Ochs (Ain’t Marchin’ Anymore) or Woody Guthrie (Pastures of Plenty) they use the songs to state that Americans can still hold a conscience and even in the dark days of GW Bush there are still some out there who believe in the spirit of 1776.
There may be a little voice saying that this earnestness should have been heard before the rise of the Obama generation but that might be a little churlish. This is a real statement from the heart and you have to respect that.Back in the mists of time Jefferson Airplane were one of the more overtly political of... more
