This is a Pam's House Blend exclusive.
Yes, it's the end of an era. The Blend has learned, from a trusted source in a position to know the details, that Joe Solmonese, President of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization in the country, will announce his departure next Tuesday. Solmonese will reportedly step down from the organization in December of this year.
His departure also signals, according to our source, the beginning of a larger staff shake-up in the HRC. The Blend can also report that a replacement executive director has been identified -- it will be someone who is not currently on the HRC's staff, but is currently a paid consultant that has worked with the civil rights group for some time.
During his tenure, the Human Rights Campaign has become a bedrock institution that has played a role in successes -- a hate crimes law passed, the legislative repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell -- the extent of its leadership and success also depends on your point of view and knowledge of the back stories related to the hard work to make these gains happen

My birth name is Michael Foley, I am 22 years old and was 20 during the time which I was working for the ((which I was employed from early march to late august, I also previously held a job with AAFES working at the on-base theatre for 2-3 years where my family lived prior to this happening)) NEX a branch of AAFES overseas while my father was stationed at a NATO base. I've known for years that I am not in the right body and growing up in a military environment has increased the stress with the majority of people in the community being very anti-gay due to "Don't ask don't tell."
Due to the strong rhetoric and anti-gay presence that is felt in military I kept it a secret for a long time that I felt this way for fear of embarrassment and my father getting the brunt of it at work. However turning 21 in august and finally getting a fulltime job at the NEX I felt it was time to let my family know and seek help at the Naval hospital on base.
I sought help at the naval base of which they were very unresponsive and told me there was nothing they could do for me eventually sending me to the psychiatric ward where they questioned me about suicide and things I hadn't gone there for. Although many talks were about my gender identity they always lead to them not being able to do anything or simply unwilling to help me. I tried many times to make appointments with doctors. This eventually lead to me buying hormones and trying to self-medicate online. ((this landed me in the emergency room twice on both occasions little to nothing was done and the recommendation was that I stop taking the pills.))
So eventually I stopped taking them. Things got worse at work, I had begun to paint my nails and put on light makeup to support how I felt inside, which lead to me being called into the back by management several times and being sent home and told to take it off or not to come back. They eventually made moves to have me fired, everytime I asked for what they would pull me into HR and to talk to management written down on paper they refused. I'm convinced that alot of what they were saying was completely illegal, I am a civilian my father served proudly in the military for years no decades and they are cornering me for being transgender? At the time unfortunatly that's not how I saw things I was getting severely depressed and not leaving my house, when they finally sent me home for good I stayed home and cried for days not leaving my room at all, I thought it would be different that because I had the strength to confront my fears that everything would go well but they didn't and it felt horrible I felt crushed, I still feel crushed. It didn't end there my mom convinced me to see JAG of which I went to and they called the NEX turns out they did very little as well, I've never felt so horrible in my life. I never thought that a branch of the american government would actually stoop this low to treat a civilian like this and I don't even know what to do. If anyone knows what do I would like help I'm still living with my parents and I haven't left the house since this incident took place.
I've attached a picture I took of one of the write-ups I received during my employment at AAFES.My birth name is Michael Foley, I am 22 years old and was 20 during the time which I... more

A Cuban man and transgender woman have married in what is being seen as the country's first "gay wedding".
Same sex marriage is illegal in Cuba, but bride Wendy Iriepa is legally a woman after undergoing one of the first state-sponsored sex changes in 2007.
Her fiance, Ignacio Estrada, is a noted dissident and gay rights activist in Cuba and suffers from Aids.
The couple said the wedding, timed to coincide with Fidel Castro's birthday, was a "gift" for the former leader.
The wedding in Havana was attended by prominent dissidents and members of the gay community.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people faced official discrimination for years in communist Cuba.
'Great injustice'
In the early days of the revolution many were sent to re-education camps to stamp out their "counter-revolutionary" values.

In this exclusive audio interview Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks with Tracy Gilchrist, Editor in Chief of Shewired.com. Shewired the lesbian online outlet of Here Media has recently unveiled a fresh new design by Boo Jarchow, Associate Editor of Shewired, that allows users to easily navigate their way through the hottest headlines from the world of pop culture, politics, travel, health and lifestyle.
When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights Gilchrist stated, “I came out in the late eighties. One of the ways that I have been committed is just through my own visibility. I’ve been out in every job that I ever had. Now that I’m kind of a professional lesbian, I think to some degree that’s helpful because it changes hearts and minds that you can work with people who are gay; we’re just kind of normal. In that sense I’ve always been myself and so that is one of my commitments to LGBT civil rights. The other one is now that I am a professional lesbian is to do my best to cover the issues that are pertinent to people in our community. To get the news out and to at least on my end make people aware of what legislation is out there that will effect their lives and who are the people we need to watch out for who are trying to take our civil rights away or just keep them from us to begin with. Also who are our heroes. I do feel it’s my duty at this point to try to put that information out in the world.”
SheWired continues to offer its dynamic roster of writers who bring a unique perspective to important gay women’s issues. Fans now have quick, easy access to SheWired’s original editorial and video content. Gilchrist encourages users to engage with other members of the SheWired community in the robust social networking section of the site which allows members with a SheWired profile to interact easily through e-mail, chat, photo sharing and more.
Tracy Gilchrist has acted as SheWired's Editor in Chief since its 2008 inception. Formerly, she worked as Senior Editor for Here Media's pioneering Lesbiannation.com. She has also contributed entertainment pieces to The Advocate, Advocate.com, Los Angeles Magazine and In Los Angeles.

A California couple is facing a state forced separation by threatening to deport Anthony Makk back to Australia, leaving his ill husband in the states to live alone. The federal government's refusal to recognize the couple's marriage, is the sole reason the men face being physically pulled apart and separated by thousands of miles of ocean. Why might the government not recognize the marriage? Religion, Ignorance, & Immaturity.
Bradford Wells & Anthony Makk first met in Australia 19 years ago. 12 years later they we're legally married in the state of Massachusetts, which was the very first state to recognize same-gender marriages.
"My marriage is as legal as every other marriage in this country," argued Wells.
Anthony, an Australian citizen, applied for permanent residency, which is an option available to married couples in America when one spouse is from other another country. Unfortunately for this couple, America is full of bigoted "Christians" who feel that Love is bestowed upon each of us by an extra-terrestrial who has an exact plan for each human being on the planet. They stand so strong in their delusions that they are able to convince generation after generation that if they don't obey a 2,000 year old rule book written by men who know a fraction of what we know today, then they will literally burn in a lake of fire for all of eternity. These same people will try to convince themselves that they are full of light and love, when all the rest of us can see and feel is darkness and confusion.

In this exclusive audio interview Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks with comedian Paula Poundstone. Poundstone is a regular panelist on NPR'S hit weekly news quiz show, "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me," which won a Peabody Award for broadcasting excellence and is currently on tour with her own one-woman show. We recently caught her sold-out live performance in Provincetown. When Paula came on the comedy scene, she thought her lack of focus would be her downfall. Now it’s called spontaneity, not lack of focus. We had a chance to catch up with Paula about her show, the NPR series and LGBT issues.
When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Poundstone stated, “I think that I am an advocate of civil rights for all, I don’t know if it’s limited to one particular group. I am thrilled to death to see America maturing in the gay marriage arena. Although frankly, I’m not clear why anyone wants to be married but OK. I always thought that people’s argument against gay marriage has always been that it would somehow destroy the sanctity of marriage and I’m kind of a mind that whoever was in charge of the sanctity to begin with had kind of fallen asleep at the helm! I think it is exciting to live in a time when things are changing. I’m really excited when my daughter who’s in high school tells me ‘you know so and so is gay.’ I just marvel. Not because her friend is gay but that it’s casual information. It’s just when I was growing up, in high school, I was the class of ’77, of course there were many gays among my class, no one would ever have said so. Ever... So I think it’s thrilling and I try to emphasize that to my kids how lucky they are to be alive in a time when people can more or less be who they are.”
Paula is headed to Alaska to record the NPR hit weekly news quiz show, “Wait Wait... Don’t Tell Me”. Poundstone states “To have access to the NPR audience is pretty darn fun. They’re smart. They’re well informed. Not that I fall into either of those categories, by the way; less and less so as I grow older, in fact.” She adds her appearances on NPR actually improve her stand-up act and vice versa.

While the focus of most people here in the United States was focused on the Debt Ceiling Fiasco, President Obama quietly issued a Presidential Proclamation that has the potential of having a wide range of impact.
This Proclamation takes the steps of barring from entry into the United States anyone who “planned, ordered, assisted, aided or abetted , committed or otherwise participated” in any attacks against anyone based partly or in whole on their sexual orientation or gender identity or who attempted to conspire or do so.
After reading the proclamation one can easily assume that one of the motivations for this being issued was the Bahati or “Kill the Gays” Bill that seems impervious to attempts to derail it in the Ugandan Parliament. This proposed law seeks to criminalize Homosexual Conduct with the ultimate penalty being Capital Punishment. There have been rumors that this Bill will be reintroduced later this month.
Another Country which may be affected by this Proclamation is Ghana. Recently the Chief Minister of the Western Region recently called for Gays to be arrested. The backlash against this has led to Personal Attacks against President Mills and a regional NGO that provides Medical Services has also been asked to provide to the regional Government the names of those in a same-sex relationship that use their services.

The city council in Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paolo, has approved a law creating the official observation of “Heterosexual Pride Day.”
It will be celebrated on the third Sunday of each December. The law must still be approved by the mayor of the city.
The author of the law, Carlos Apolinario, says “Heterosexual Pride Day” is not anti-gay but a protest against what he says are the privileges the gay community enjoys.

In this exclusive audio interview Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks with filmmaker Nicole Conn about her new film “A Perfect Ending” starring Morgan Fairchild, John Heard, Barbara Niven and newcomer Jessica Clark. Conn stated this is her best cinematic achievement in 20 years of filmmaking and audiences will be thrilled when sparks fly between Barbara Niven and Jessica Clark.
When Nicole Conn released her landmark film, “Claire of the Moon” in 1992, the landscape was practically void of other lesbian-themed movies. Nearly 20 years later, a sprinkling of movies with queer themes has made it to the mainstream like Brokeback Mountain, Boys Don’t Cry, The Kids are Alright. But the field is still so small that most people can name those films off the top of their head. With this summer’s restored re-release of “Claire of the Moon”, Nicole Conn takes a look back at the film, her career and the future of women’s films.
When asked what her personal commitment is to LGBT civil rights, Conn stated, “Complete and utter devotion to LGBT civil rights. I believe that we should get everything that everyone else gets. I believe in absolute equality for all human beings. I have worked with HRC on many fundraisers for my documentary “Little Man”. They sponsored the film in many places. And I continue to fight that fight and I believe in the fight for marriage equality, all equality across the board. I am not a political filmmaker and I’ve gotten some negative feedback around that. I’m really a storyteller and that’s just who I am. I’m not political in my art, I’m political in my life.”
“Claire of the Moon” will be released by Peccadillo Pictures Ltd. this month along with a Nicole Conn Box Set that will include “Claire of the Moon”, “Cynara”, and “Elena Undone”. “A Perfect Ending” will be playing the festival circuit this year and into 2012.

The official website for Christian rap-metal band Junkyard Prophet says that lead singer and drummer Bradlee Dean is hard, funky, loud and fast. Next time the webmaster logs on, he might want to add lawsuit-happy, pissed off and weary of gays.
In addition to performing with Junkyard Prophet, Dean also runs the religious ministry You Can Run But You Cannot Hide International. His latest undertaking, however, involves drumming up a lawsuit against MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow. Dean is seeking upwards of $50 million in damages, claiming that remarks made last year by Maddow were fictitious and defaming.
On an August 2010 broadcast, Maddow played a clip of Dean speaking on an AM radio program. Before he called homosexuality an “abomination” in the soundbyte, the metal head said that Muslim nations that execute gays were more moral than American Christians.
“Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America,” said Dean. “This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws."
Then, relayed Maddow, Dean mentioned that the average gay person molests over 100 people “before they’re found out.”

In this exclusive audio interview Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks with filmmaker John Waters in part two of our series of celebrity chats from the Provincetown International Film Festival. Waters is one of the founders of the PIFF and every year he conducts an event highlighting his movie pick of the year. John’s favorite movie of 2010 is "Domaine" a French film directed by Patric Chiha that tracks the evolution of the unusually close relationship between an alcoholic mathematician (Betty Blue’s Béatrice Dalle) and her gay teenage nephew. Their friendship is an homage to that of Albert Einstein and Kurt Gödel but with more white wine and visits to a shadowy discotheque. The result is a sexy, fresh, and poignant movie, one that gets to the underlying truths John Waters truly appreciates.
We also talked to Waters about LGBT civil rights, gay marriage and LGBTQ teen bullying. LGBTQ teens are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Over the past year, numerous teens have taken their own lives after facing bullying incidents. When asked what advise he would have for these kids, Waters stated, “Bullying is going to happen even if you’re not gay. Bullying is a thing that you have to learn to deal with; it’s part of getting through life unfortunately. High school is how you learn. Wait until you get a job and you get bullied in your job. Wait until you try to get into the art world to make a film, you get bullied. So unfortunately you have to learn how to deal with bullies. You have to figure out a way to be smart enough to get around them or make them laugh. People that wanted to beat me up, I made them laugh first. Humor can be a great weapon but teachers are very wrong to allow it. When I went to high school there was no talk about bullying. They (teachers) didn’t lift a finger to stop it so that’s very wrong.”
John Waters, filmmaker, actor, stand-up comedian, writer, journalist, visual artist, and art collector rose to fame in the early 1970s for his cult films like “Pink Flamingos” and “Female Trouble”. His 80’s film “Hairspray” brought him mainstream success followed by the Broadway play of the same name. His bestselling book “Role Models” is now available in paperback just in time for your summer reading.

The US Defense Ministry is ready to lift a ban on gays openly serving in the army. Now gay people will finally have the right to join the Empire's army, fighting to kill people on the other side of the planet to keep my free speech alive... I mean that is what the American troops are doing all over the world right? Protecting my rights?
Pentagon chief Leon Panetta is expected to announce later on Friday that the US is ready to repeal the prohibition, called “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, which bars gays who are open about their sexual orientation from serving in the armed forces.
The ban will be lifted 60 days after the Pentagon’s approval.

The Pentagon is set to announce that the ban on gay people openly serving in US military is to end, officials say.
Defence Secretary Leon Panetta is expected to certify the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT), seven months after the law was overturned in the Senate.
After the repeal, the Pentagon had asked for time to prepare troops for the arrival of openly gay colleagues.
The ban officially ceases 60 days after certification.
The certification signals that President Barack Obama, Defence Secretary Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen have officially confirmed that the military is prepared.
Over the course of the past seven months, the Pentagon has produced new manuals and prepared military forces for the change.
Under the US policy of DADT established in 1993, gay people could serve in the military but could not acknowledge their orientation. The military was forbidden to inquire but was permitted to expel service members found to be gay.
The end of DADT fulfils a campaign pledge made in 2008 by President Barack Obama, who signed it into law in December. The Pentagon is set to announce that the ban on gay people openly serving in US... more

In this exclusive audio interview Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks with Chef Rossi, owner and executive chef of The Raging Skillet one of New York City’s best and wildest gay-owned caterers. Now that New York has passed gay marriage and you’re seeking the perfect caterer for your wedding, check out The Raging Skillet which has been catering weddings for 23 years and has won “The Knot Best of Weddings Pick” for the last 3 years running. If there is such a thing as an anti-caterer, this company, which specializes in nontraditional parties, may be it. Every detail is personalized down to the attire of the staff (miniskirts? or kilts?) and the style of service. Chef Rossi serves dishes from several different cuisines at a single event -- she calls her firm "the wildest catering company this side of the Mason-Dixon line". Their food reflects fusions from Korea, Japan, Thailand, Cuba, South Carolina, New Orleans, Morocco, Jamaica, India, The Southwest, Vegan, Vegetarian and Rossi's mother's Hungarian Yiddish home-cooking.
Chef Rossi is ecstatic to be able to cater her first legal gay weddings next month now that gay marriage has passed in her state. When asked if she thought passing gay marriage will be a financial boom for New York Chef Rossi stated, “Oh, of course, it’s going to be a windfall. Our own little Mayor Bloomberg is running around announcing he wants to turn us into the gay marriage capital of the universe. And I think it’s great. Listen, New York like everywhere else has had their problems in this economy and New York has had a rough time. And if doing the right thing and saying ‘yes’ to marriage equality makes us a booming business for gay marriage I think what a great reason. So yes I definitely think this is going to bring in tons of money.”
For your special Wedding Day, The Raging Skillet offers hot and cold vegetarian poultry, meats and fish hors d'oeuvres. Enjoy three cheese quesadillas with tomatillo salsa, wild mushroom wontons with red pepper dip, Thai style chicken saté with spicy peanut sauce, roast lamb brochettes with cilantro aioli or crab and shrimp shu mai dumplings just to name a few delectable choices. Entrées include such tasties as lobster tails, Senegalese chicken Yassa breast of chicken smothered in sweet onions and green olives with Scotch bonnet peppers served over coconut scented jasmine rice, leg of lamb with pear chutney cous cous and curried baby squash and portabella mushroom au poivre in port wine and thyme with garden vegetables and crispy parsnips.
The New York Times called Chef Rossi “a new breed of rebel anti-caterer” and “eclectic and off the wall” by the Zagats review. She has also been featured on “The Food Network.” As a radio personality Rossi’s hit show “Bite This” on Cape Cod’s WOMR is now in its 7th season where she shares her edible memoirs from her book entitled “The Devil and Mrs. Goldstein" which is currently seeking a publisher.
She has also appeared on NPR.

Isn't this interesting. Michele Bachmann has a gay stepsister. Here is a video of her campaigning for gay and lesbian rights. She is also an Obama supporter. Her name is Helen LeFave.
http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2011/07/13/bachmann_gay_step_sister_obama_inauguration/
So, Bachmann has a gay person in her somewhat immediate family, and yet her and her husband continue to rail against gay and homosexuality.
Just for the heck of it, I did a search on Think Progress and found 67 articles about "gays" and "Michele Bachmann." 67 articles. I think it's fairly safe to say that Michele Bachmann is quite literally obsessed with homosexuality.
I wonder if Michele and her stepsister even talk. I suspect not, but I have no idea. It wouldn't surprise me if they hadn't communicated in years. So sad if true.
I know of a person who came out to her parents when she was 21. Her father disowned her, told her she was no longer his daughter, told her he no longer wanted anything to do with her. He took it one step further. He actually began joining campaigns against gay rights, fighting ordinances guaranteeing gays civil rights, and campaigns to ban gay marriage, etc. That was his reaction to his daughter not being what he wanted her to be. I almost wonder if that's at least part of what drives Michele's obsession with "the gay." (Well, her husband being an OBVIOUS closet case I'm sure is part of it, too.)
Anyway, it's heartbreaking. I can't imagine completely turning my back on my own flesh and blood like that man did. I can't imagine not accepting a child for simply who they are. Or a stepsister.Isn't this interesting. Michele Bachmann has a gay stepsister. Here is a video of... more

"And again, don't misunderstand. I am not here bashing people who are homosexuals, who are lesbians, who are bisexual, who are transgendered. We need to have profound compassion for the people who are dealing with the very real issue of sexual dysfunction in their life, and sexual identity disorders. This is a very real issue. It's not funny, it's sad.
"Any of you who have members of your family that are in the lifestyle—we have a member of our family that is. This is not funny. It's a very sad life. It's part of Satan, I think, to say this is gay. It's anything but gay. "
"It's profoundly sad to recognize that almost all, if not all, individuals who have gone into the lifestyle have been abused at one time in their life, either by a male or by a female. There's been profound hurt and profound things that have happened in almost all of their lives."
"This new legal enforcement of a new status—homosexuality, lesbianism, bringing it into the mainstream, if you will, giving it a legitimacy if you will, that will impact not only the gay community, but every man, woman and child, particularly the schools.

In this exclusive audio interview Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks with Jenni Chang and Lisa Dazols about “Out and Around”. Their mission is to travel around the world in search of LGBT leaders and allies that are making a difference. They will be chronicling their journeys as a lesbian couple and sharing the accounts of the extraordinary individuals they meet during their “not-so-straight travels”.
When asked what do they hope to accomplish with “Out & Around”, Jenni stated, “One of the things that we realized in the LGBT community is that we really lack role models. So we hope by highlighting these people around the world and these could be leaders in community organizing, in business, in arts, in entertainment, in health, and all aspects of society, we think that their stories will provide role models to LGBTQ youth and queer people globally. Secondly, we hope that by highlighting stories of LGBT people in all walks of life we can help decrease homophobia and just show that gay people are striving everywhere and they contribute to society in so many ways. And thirdly, we want to bring attention to LGBT issues, particularly in developing countries because in those countries there’s still a long way to go.”
Lisa is fluent in Spanish and Jenni is fluent in Chinese. They’re going places where their dollar stretches far or where they have family or where people have promised a place to stay since their finances are limited. The first stop starting July 6th is New Zealand, then on to Australia, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan, China, Nepal, India, Africa and South America.
Jenni and Lisa have been together for two years. Jenni Chang works as a business manager for eBay Inc, the online marketplace site. Jenni’s international experience includes volunteering with community outreach groups in Taiwan, Cambodia, and China. Jenni is an LGBT activist who is involved in the Asian American and Christian LGBT communities in San Francisco. Lisa Dazols is a licensed clinical social worker who is in her tenth year in HIV services. Lisa works at UCSF’s Positive Health Program in San Francisco’s largest HIV clinic. She started her career as an international HIV social worker in Chile before getting her masters degree in social welfare at UC Berkeley.
