From Siberia to the Amazon, you can now get your sushi fix in some of the most remote regions of the world. What was once one nation's cuisine has, in a matter of 20 years, gone global. But the worlds' insatiable appetite for sushi comes at cost.
In this Vanguard hour, Adam, a ravenous sushi consumer since childhood, goes on the journey of the Bluefin tuna from the deep waters of the ocean to a sushi bar in downtown Los Angeles. He then travels to Japan, where the populace is nervously bracing for what could be a world without Bluefin tuna. Adam visits the famous Tsukiji fish market, where the world's best fish is bought and sold to the world -- and asks the question: will our taste buds spell chaos for the world's oceans? A recent study by the UN warns that the world's oceans may be completely depleted of fish in 40 years. Already, ninety percent of the large fish in the world's oceans have disappeared. And one of the most endangered fish today is the Bluefin tuna--also know as the king of sushi. From Siberia to the Amazon, you can now get your sushi fix in some of the most remote... more

As Japan's population slowly shrinks, the island nation has come to rely more and more on its mechanized labor force. Sounds like a movie, but it's totally true.
This weekend a report came out showing that Japan's economy has been shrinking as well, to the point that it was necessary to start laying off *robot* laborers.
Vanguard's Adam Yamaguchi produced an episode of Vanguard called "Robot Nation" exploring Japan, it's population decline and its reliance on a robotic labor force. This is a segment from that show in which Adam spends some time with two different robots: Asimo and TwendyOne.As Japan's population slowly shrinks, the island nation has come to rely more and... more

The wild tiger is among the world's most endangered species, pushed to the brink of extinction in large part by poachers who are killing the animals for profit. The illicit tiger parts trade is worth billions of dollars and nowhere is it more active than in China, the world's leading consumer of illegal wildlife. Nearly two decades ago, the Chinese government instituted a series of conservation efforts ostensibly aimed at saving the tiger from what appeared to be its imminent demise, but correspondent Adam Yamaguchi goes undercover and exposes flagrant and widespread violation of China's tiger trade laws. At the heart of Yamaguchi's investigation are China's many tiger parks, touted as safe-haven preserves. In truth, as evidenced by the material that "Vanguard" gathers, these parks may be anything but.

The bluefin tuna is in danger. In the last four decades the sea has seen a steady and alarming decrease of the bluefin by 75 percent, according to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICATT).
Last month the Obama administration declined to grant the Atlantic bluefin tuna the Endangered Species Act protection, despite ever-increasing numbers of overfishing.
Larry Robinson, assistant secretary for conservation and management with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said, “The bluefin tuna does not warrant protection under Endangered Species Act because it was ‘not likely to become extinct’.” Yet there are statistics indicating that they may go extinct as early as 2012.

The statistics speak for themselves. The Bluefin tuna population is in steady and dramatic decline, caused mostly by over-fishing around the world. According to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICAAT), “the eastern Atlantic’s stocks of fish old enough to reproduce declined by 80 percent between 1970 and 1992 and have since fluctuated between 21 percent and 29 percent of the 1970 level.” Then why did the US just decline to grant endangered species status to the Bluefin when the species is in such spectacular decline?
After working on “Sushi to the Slaughter” (premiering July 12th), I came to realize how complex this issue is and that, amongst other factors, there are huge market forces keeping the Bluefin’s fate hanging in the balance. Had the tuna been classified as an endangered species, it would have made fishing for them in US waters illegal – a devastating blow tantamount to a nail in the coffin for inshore fisherman. Many believe that the administration’s decision was influenced by pressure from the US fishing industry.
This pressure only pales in comparison to the aggressive Japanese lobby that kept the UN from implementing an export ban on tuna last year. My trip to Japan's Tsukiji fish market really drove home how important tuna is to the Japanese. In my opinion, this is an example ofwhen allowing normal market forces to fix a problem just won't work. The Japanese will continue to pay ever-increasing prices for this fish until they are extinct. Just this past January, a new record was set – a 752-lbs tuna fetched a winning bid of $396,000! Beyond the economics, there are also cultural and sociological reasons that keep tuna consumption so high in Japan. Currently, Japan consumes 80 percent of the Bluefin catch.
However, this isn’t a Japanese nor an American issue, mostly because of the migratory nature of tuna. This majestic fish can accelerate faster than a Porsche and travels the world’s oceans at 55 mph. And until there are multilateral and international efforts to enforce fishing quotas etc., conservation is going to have begin at the consumer level – starting with me, a self-professed, tuna-obsessed, sushi lover.

In the upcoming Vanguard episode "Sushi to the Slaughter," correspondent Adam Yamaguchi investigates the endangerment of the Bluefin tuna thanks to its growing success as a worldwide delicacy. A 2010 UN study estimated that oceans could be depleted of all fish in 40 years. Overfishing currently depletes fish stocks much faster than the population is replenished, thanks in part to the ever-increasing demand for sushi. Bluefin tuna sits at the top of the list of species most desired.
A sushi consumer since childhood, Adam has decided to go on a journey to find out exactly why the Bluefin has become the king of sushi, how quality is produced and sold, and where the sushi industry is headed now.
His investigation takes him from Los Angeles through New England, and all the way to Japan. Each day this week, current.com has released a new dispatch from Adam's research in the field.
In Cape Cod, Adam sailed out with a crew to try to catch a Bluefin tuna first hand. He was challenged to help wrangle any catches to make sure they were pulled onto boat.
From there, following the Bluefin tuna trail took Adam to Japan. He visited a factory where Bluefin gets cleaned, cut, checked for quality, and packaged. In the upcoming Vanguard episode "Sushi to the Slaughter," correspondent... more
