In this antiwar/economic climate there seems fewer and fewer people concerned with our veterans. They're not the ones to blame this situation on and they need our undivided attention right now. LONDON, March 22 (UPI) -- Disability activists say they're backing a British mother given a $145 parking ticket when she stopped to revive her severely disabled son.
Penny Batkin, 40, was taking her son, Freddie, 4, to a hospice in Hampton when he began gasping for breath and turning blue, said Richmond Aid, a charity for people with disabilities.

A children's show host who was born with one hand is facing criticism from parents over her disability.
BBC spokeswoman Katya Mira said the corporation has received at least 25 "official" complaints recently about Cerrie Burnell, new host of two shows on the BBC-run CBeebies television network, which is aimed at children younger than 6.
The official complaints do not count the dozens of negative comments lodged in Internet chat rooms, Mira said.
In one chat room, a father lamented that Burnell being on the show forced him to have conversations with his child about disabilities.

A disabled CBeebies presenter has been the victim of a disturbing campaign after parents complained that she was scaring toddlers.
They claimed that host Cerrie Burnell - who was born with one arm - is not suitable to appear on the digital children's channel.
Miss Burnell and co-presenter Alex Winters took over the popular Do and Discover slot and The Bedtime Hour programme last month.
But the decision to hire her has prompted a flurry of complaints to the BBC and on parenting message boards, with some of the posts on the CBeebies website becoming so vicious that they had to be removed.
Incredibly, one father said he wanted to ban his daughter from watching the channel because he feared it would give her nightmares.
Others claimed that they were forced to discuss difficult issues with their young children before they were ready.
One blogger wrote: 'Is it just me, or does anyone else think the new woman presenter on CBeebies may scare the kids because of her disability?
'I didn't want to let my children watch the filler bits on The Bedtime Hour last night because I know it would have played on my eldest daughter's mind and possibly caused sleep problems. And yes, this is a serious post.'
Are some parents being somewhat paranoid over this? What's the problem with sitting down with your child / children, explaining that some people are born with disabilities, and that while there may be a visible difference, there is nothing unusual about it?A disabled CBeebies presenter has been the victim of a disturbing campaign after... more

USAtogether.org, lists veterans' stories and specific needs online.
The charity is one of many set up to help U.S. troops beyond the compensation and benefits the government offers, but it's not run by a church group, a veterans association or even a military family.
Instead, it was founded by a group of Silicon Valley professionals in California.
The project is the brainchild of Dave Mahler, whose résumé includes an engineering degree, 13 years at Hewlett-Packard designing servers and software, co-founding a start-up and serving on nonprofit boards -- but no military background.USAtogether.org, lists veterans' stories and specific needs online.

I think it's a different kind of relationship - one built on help and bonding with the disabled person ... but very interesting
"... in the academic journal Research on Aging – show what happens with couples when one of them loses the ability to perform routine daily activities: Both men and women – regardless of age – reported being happier in their marriage after they themselves became physically disabled.
Men whose spouse became physically disabled also experienced greater happiness in their relationship. Women whose spouse became physically disabled reported no overall change in the relationship.
“The numbers show that couples seem to come together when one of them experiences physical limitations,” Yorgason said. “This suggests disability is a two-way street, with some surprising pluses in addition to the minuses people ordinarily expect."
The results are based on information provided by 1,217 married people randomly selected from around the country. Researchers tracked the lives of the study participants for 12 years. By study’s end, about one-fourth of participants – ranging from 36 to 75 years old – reported that either they or their spouse had permanent physical conditions that restricted activities such as dressing, bathing, eating or working around the house. The researchers zeroed in on this group, comparing their satisfaction in marriage before and after the physical disability occurred."I think it's a different kind of relationship - one built on help and bonding... more

Flying a plane when you've got no hands? For one woman, it's just a bit of h-armless fun!
Jessica Cox doesn’t let her disability prevent her from achieving what she wants – the 25-year-old from Tucson, Arizona has become the first person without arms to control a plane and has just been awarded her pilot’s licence.
The ‘Able Flight’ organisation, which helps disabled people gain self-confidence through flying, enabled Jessica’s hopes of taking to the skies take off.
It took three years for the American to gain her licence – her teacher Parrish Traweek taught her how to use the controls of the Ercoupe 415 plane with her feet!
Her best flight so far was her examination to get her licence at the end of October: “When we got up into the air, the wind blew and there was a bit of turbulence, but I came through it well.” She was also praised for her landing by her flying coach.
