Companies like EDUN, which launched in Spring 2005, have been pioneers in the emerging eco-fashion industry. The clothing line was created by Ali Hewson and Bono and founded on the premise of trade as a means of building sustainable communities in developing countries to help foster economic growth rather than provide charity.
EDUN uses organic cotton wherever possible: 61% of the Fall/Winter 2008 collection and 50% of the Spring/Summer 2008 collection is organic. EDUN sources its organic fabrics from Peru, India, Turkey and Uganda. U2 frontman (and bromance pal of Tony Blair and Nelson Mandela) Bono made an unexpected appearance today via video link at the Conservative party conference.
After an intro by William Hague, His Irishness used the opportunity to encourage the Tories to stay committed to international development.
Bono also showed up via video last week to introduce Gordon Brown before his keynote speech in Brighton. Whilst he steered clear of making any party political endorsement today, ex-PR man David Cameron will still be chuffed to have the association at least of such a major aid campaigner and pop icon.
============================================
In other Conservative Conference news, David Cameron's declared he was "ready to be tested" and claimed the Tories will "put Britain back on her feet". He also revealed he considered quitting politics for good after the death of his son Ivan and paid credit to his wife for her support.
Forget global warming! In this send up of the group's shameless 2004 pimp-omercial for the Apple iPod, we reveal how filthy rich pop stars with private airliners and venture capital funds pose a greater threat to our civilization than a few sunburned polar bears. As the hooded Irish icon and his ilk raise hundreds of thousands to fight hunger and waste millions advertisiing it, the line between religious charity and the corporate bottom line is blurred. Armed with vanity and delusions of sanctity, Bono and the lads at Elevation Partners take Gordon Gekko's credo to the next level: "Fear is transitory. Greed is permanent!"Forget global warming! You'd think that any rock star would relish a chance to get a public embrace from the President of the United States, even if they didn't agree on everything.
But not Bono.
On a BBC program last night, the superstar U2 singer recalled how he he stiffed President Bush out of the photo op in 2006 at the National Prayer Breakfast.
The former President was on the stage with Bush when "Dubya" tried to hug Bono.
"There were all kinds of people in the audience," Bono recalled on Jonathan Ross' talk show.
Bono admitted he didn't feel like being the recipient of a hug from a man with whom he had so many political disagreements.
As the affectionate President neared, Bono tried to "dodge the hug" by jumping behind a podium.
The sidestep worked, and just about nobody in the audience knew it happened — though it was all captured on camera.
But — there was one sharp-eyed Senator in the bipartisan crowd who saw it all.
"When I was sitting down I was beside Sen. Obama, the star said the future President whispered to him, 'Nice work with the hug dodge.'"
Bono admitted he passed on the embrace because he didn't get along with Bush, and told the former President of his strong stance against war — although he did praise him for tripling U.S. aid to developing countries. You'd think that any rock star would relish a chance to get a public embrace from the... more

Chastity Bono, daughter of Cher and the late Sonny Bono, is undergoing gender reassignment surgery, his publicist confirmed to ABCNews.com.
"Yes, it's true -- Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity," Howard Bragman said. "He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones. It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago.
"We ask that the media respect Chaz's privacy during this long process as he will not be doing any interviews at this time," Bragman added.
Bono, an LGBT civil rights advocate, journalist, author and musician, began the process of changing his gender earlier this year, following his 40th birthday. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has already voiced its support of him.
"Chaz Bono's decision to live his life authentically represents an important step forward, both for him personally and for all who are committed to advancing discussions about fairness and equality for transgender people," GLAAD president Neil G. Giuliano said in a statement to reporters. "Coming out as transgender is an extremely personal decision and one that is never made lightly."
Bono revealed to his parents that he was a lesbian at age 18 and wrote about the experience in his 1998 memoir, "Family Outing."
In 2002, Bono wrote "The End of Innocence," a second memoir about coming out, his music career, and his partner's death from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.Chastity Bono, daughter of Cher and the late Sonny Bono, is undergoing gender... more
A complaint from musicFIRST Coalition filed with the FCC says a major artist was told radio stations wouldn't play his/her songs after complaining that musicians should make royalties for spins. Many are speculating the artist in question is Bono.
"In April, Bono issued a statement on behalf of pay for musicians, saying, "It's only fair that when radio makes money by playing a recording artist's music . . . the recording artist should be compensated just as songwriters are already." ... Other artists involved with musicFIRST include Don Henley, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera and Wyclef Jean."
Bono, though an admittedly good songwriter when he puts his mind to it, is an idiot. Let's look at the facts. He wears sunglasses *all* the time, even indoors. He comes out with nonsense quotes like "I really believe we've moved out of the realm of Karma into one of Grace." And then there's that whole Mephisto character.
Still not convinced that the man who wrote songs as good as "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "One" is a berk? Just read this bizarre poem he recently wrote about Elvis and you'll agree with me.
I'm finding it too hard to pick a favourite line. "elvis called God every morning then left the phone off the hook," "elvis grew sideburns as a protest against tom jones' hairy chest," and "elvis had a monkey named scatter before anyone," are all gems of lines that are so ridiculous they're actually brilliant.

With just Chicago left, the stakes have been raised. This event is attracting an incredible amount of publicity for the plight of these child soldiers. The crescendo in this final city will be loudest by attracting the attention of one of the most powerful media or mogul figures below, and we are confident that this story can and will reach their ears.
What can you do? Tweet these individuals. Create YouTube videos asking them to become a part of the end of this campaign and this war. We need our collective voice to be the loudest its been.
What you shouldn’t do — Phone calls and emails to these people as well as to media outlets in Chicago are not effective at this point. Also, be encouraging in our communication to these people — inspire them to become involved by telling your story and why you’re involved, don’t try to guilt them into showing up.
With that, here’s our final mogul list. These are individuals who can truly affect foreign policy:
