When a man came to converse with Socrates, he usually thought that he had a fair knowledge of what he was talking about. But after half an hour of Socrates' questioning, he discovered that he knew nothing at all – and at that moment, Socrates explained, his philosophical quest could begin.
If ever there was a time when we needed an appreciation of how little we know, it is surely now. Our financial institutions are in meltdown; we are bound together more closely than ever before – electronically, politically and economically – and yet the world is polarised; we are engaged in destructive wars we seem unable to end or win; and we are facing environmental catastrophe. A joint effort and a Socratic humility and openness to others is required if we are to meet the challenges of our time and create a just and viable world.
That is why we are launching the Charter for Compassion.
The principle of compassion lies at the heart of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions, calling us always to treat all others as we wish to be treated ourselves. Compassion impels us to work tirelessly to alleviate the suffering of our fellow creatures, to dethrone ourselves from the centre of our world and put another there, and to honour the inviolable sanctity of every single human being, treating everybody, without exception, with absolute justice, equity and respect.
It is also necessary in both public and private life to refrain consistently and empathically from inflicting pain. To act or speak violently out of spite, chauvinism, or self-interest, to impoverish, exploit or deny basic rights to anybody, and to incite hatred by denigrating others—even our enemies—is a denial of our common humanity. We acknowledge that we have failed to live compassionately and that some have even increased the sum of human misery in the name of religion.
We therefore call upon all men and women ~ to restore compassion to the centre of morality and religion ~ to return to the ancient principle that any interpretation of scripture that breeds violence, hatred or disdain is illegitimate ~ to ensure that youth are given accurate and respectful information about other traditions, religions and cultures ~ to encourage a positive appreciation of cultural and religious diversity ~ to cultivate an informed empathy with the suffering of all human beings—even those regarded as enemies.
We urgently need to make compassion a clear, luminous and dynamic force in our polarized world. Rooted in a principled determination to transcend selfishness, compassion can break down political, dogmatic, ideological and religious boundaries. Born of our deep interdependence, compassion is essential to human relationships and to a fulfilled humanity. It is the path to enlightenment, and indispensible to the creation of a just economy and a peaceful global community
Reid Baer discovered today he is Type 2 diabetic now at the age of 57 years old. Diabetes is ranked as the 6th highest cause of death in America.
“I thought much today about dying … and the thin thread that keeps me alive in this mortal sphere. Fortunately, I have faith in God and belief in a life hereafter. The prayer I hold in my heart is to be ready – prepared to eventually meet my Maker. Today, I’ve inched a little closer to that reality.” – ReidReid Baer discovered today he is Type 2 diabetic now at the age of 57 years old.... more
Europe is facing a population crisis because of attacks on religion by secular writers, Britain's chief rabbi says.
Lord Sacks blamed Europe's falling birth rate on a culture of "consumerism and instant gratification".
He said the continent was "dying" and accused its citizens of not being prepared for parenthood's "sacrifices".

The interesting thing to note here, I believe, is the idea of our generally secular mindset and whether it does really lead to a desire for "consumerism and instant gratification".

A man walking from Texas to his hometown in Washington state has had a cross to bear for months. James Strickland says he's been dragging a 12-foot cross from Longview, Texas, to his Aberdeen home since May.
The 39-year-old says he was praying about his troubled past when he received a message to start walking on a journey of renewal. He took along the cross, which rolls on wheels with his belongings tied near the bottom.
He expects to reach home Tuesday or Wednesday. Strickland says the trek has taken him through Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah and Idaho.
He says he hopes to reconcile with the mother of his two children.

Theists who try to respond to the question, Why doesn't God heal amputees? end up avoiding the question altogether and lecturing the questioner about a bunch of unasked questions. Could it be that they have no good answer for why their god refuses to heal amputees every single time, so they try to explain why they're god allows bad things to happen instead and hope we don't notice? This video discusses this observation and the reason why the question itself is important.Theists who try to respond to the question, Why doesn't God heal amputees? end up... more
With everything that is going wrong in the world today it is no wonder families are breaking apart. We have become a society more dependent on government than at any time in history.
We must save our family to save America.

Perhaps the biggest issue next to the question of God itself, is did we create him or is he our creator? Materialists, people who beleive in Darwin's Natural Selection and deny God, beleive God is an illusion that humans have evolved to beleive in to help cope with death and the fear of living. Spiritual and Religious people, on the other hand, beleive God is superior to all and is hard to understand only because he exists in another realm, a "mystical" realm.
Richard Dawkins, premier materialist and Darwin advocate, claims that humans over time evolved spiritual thoughts and a beleif of God on their brains to ease the overwhelming emotions of life and to help understand death. That any spiritual thoughts or "visions" are mere abnormalities in the physical brain. But this theory also denies the possibility of life beyond death. If there is no spiritual realm, like he states, then we are but mere biological brainiacs that have evolved to beleive in one. That we created God.
Yet there are also many large cultures who deeply beleive, even feel, that there is a spiritual or other-worldy realm beyond ours. Their evidence is lacking but they claim that what they sense on these spiritual trips is more real than life itself. Very devout faiths like Catholicism, Buddhism, or Hinduism preach that if you follow a spiritual life it is much more fullfilling. Why is that? Is it because we become closer to god? That god created us, and gave us the choice to either beleive or ignore him?
I'm curious as to what other people have to think of this, so please leave me your opinions or related life experiences on this topic. Thank you.Perhaps the biggest issue next to the question of God itself, is did we create him or... more
A new agency is scouring the world for the next big thing in modeling. The major difference between this one and the others? Models of Life is a Christian agency, aiming to bring the worlds of faith and fashion together.
'"To be a model is to set an example," [Models of Life's philosophy] proclaims. "Just at a time when the controversy over skinny models reflects how the perception of beauty is evolving, MOL aims to raise the standard of models to a new height: beauty achieved from the perfect balance and unity of spirit, mind, and physical body."
But Laurie Kuhrt, chairman of the Association of Model Agents, which represents the UK's top agencies, questioned whether religion and the catwalk can make for happy bedfellows.
"If they're genuinely trying to make contact with people with a view to turning them into good, honest Christians, I don't have a problem with that," he said. "But modelling is not about exuding inner beauty, it is about selling goods and services. When we recruit people it's solely because we think they can do big advertisement campaigns and appear on catwalks. If they can't do that, we lose a lot of money."'A new agency is scouring the world for the next big thing in modeling. The major... more
I wanted to love Not That Kind of Girl, a new memoir from “recovering evangelical”
Carlene Bauer.
On the surface, it was unclear just what, exactly, “recovering evangelical” meant. In the first chapter, Bauer describes her first encounter with the End Times, via a church basement screening of A Thief in the Night with her Christian classmates. At 8, her biggest fears suddenly included the government installing a bar code on her forehead or the back of her hand under a blood-red moon. She goes to bed at night earnestly whispering to God, “Could I live until I fell in love?”
This girl is me, I thought. I vividly remember telling my mom, myself at 8 years old, that I wanted to be excited for Jesus to come back, but if he could, it would be great if he could wait until I went to college, got married, and had a career and kids.
What critics are heralding as a “good-girl memoir” is actually a tragic story of faith, slowly and painfully lost. Bauer writes for a generation raised in the church of Dare to Discipline. For Bauer, faith comes easily at first, and even as she grows up and enters public school, she finds it easy to resist sex and alcohol.
But as her faith lingers during her college years at a Catholic university, belief in God feels like something she would shake off if she could only find the proper motive. Faith is a convenient foil to her introverted tendencies and dislike of the drunken parties and casual sex that consume her classmates. She secretly envies her friend Jane, who came to Christ in college, because it offers her a “platform for radical self-invention.”
Unfortunately, she can’t quite recapture this experience after graduating and moving to New York City. There she bounces from church to church, gradually letting go of her moral convictions in order to “experience life” in the way she’d desired at age 8, in whispered prayers.
What is ultimately missing from Bauer’s account is any sense of real community to support her amid her fleeting convictions. Roommates, friends, and love interests, Christian and non-Christian, come and go, and none is particularly memorable. Though Iris Murdoch's observation that “love is the extremely uncomfortable realization that something other than oneself is real” first led Bauer to the Catholic Church, we never see her live out the “uncomfortable” reality. “If I had to love someone the way I had to love God, I would have to leave,” she says, after she has already left God.
Bauer’s is a truly thoughtful de-conversion story, and that makes it particularly heartbreaking.
Unfortunately, hers is an all-too-common story: disaffected with the church, capital C, she gives up on God.
This book provided a reminder that we can never expect or ask anyone to singularly represent our faith. That’s something we must do every day, as persons who aspire to show not just what kind of girls we are, but also what kind of God we serve.

Kitab At-Tawheed is one of the best books on the subject of Tawheed (Islamic Monotheism) and ranks high in authenticity. Till date it has gone through various publications; and had been the means for guidance of the millions of people throughout the world; by taking them out of the darkness of polytheism and error.

This is Islam: Islam means "submission to God". Islam is the belief that there is only One God, whose proper name is Allah, which means " the God". Islam is the same message given to all the prophets, from Adam, Noah, Moses, Abraham, Jesus, and finally to the Prophet Muhammad, the last messenger (peace and blessings be upon them). They all brought the same message: worship only God, and stop worshipping human beings and their ideas.
Become a Muslim Now: If you believe there is only One God who should be worshiped, and no one/nothing else has that right but Him, and you believe Muhammad, peace be upon him, was a messenger who brought the same message as all the prophets before him, then you are basically a Muslim.

When faith is firm in your heath you will feel the eagerness to do good deeds creeping into you, and you embark upon good deeds and purify your intention for your Lord you will find that your faith increases. If you come across any matter which baffles you then seek the help of other sincere believers and you will overcome your difficulty by Allah’s leave. But beware of being a help for those who are corrupt and stick to your Lord’s command: “Help ye one another unto righteousness and pious duty. Help not one another unto sin and transgression, but keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is severe in punishment.” (5:2)

Stevens converted to the Islamic faith at the height of his fame in December, 1977.
In 1978, Stevens took the name Yusuf Islam. Yusuf is the Arabic rendition of the name Joseph. He stated that he "always loved the name Joseph" and was particularly drawn to the story of Joseph in the Qur'an.
You can hear the story of Joseph in the Holy Quran from here "Surat Yusuf, Number 12"

May I suggest to the seeker of truth do the following NINE STEPS for purification of the mind:
Clean their mind, their heart and their soul real good.
Clear away all the prejudices and biases.
Read a good translation of the meaning of the Holy Quran in a language that they can understand best.
Take some time.
Read and reflect.
Think and pray.
And keep on asking the One who created you in the first place, to guide you to the truth.
Keep this up for a few months. And be regular in it.
Above all, do not let others who are poisoned in their thinking influence you while your are in this state of "rebirth of the soul."
The rest is between you and the Almighty Lord of the Universe. If you truly love Him, then He already knows it and He will deal with each of us according to our hearts.
Peace to you and Guidance from Allah the One Almighty God, Creator and Sustainer of all that exists.

I always wanted to "see the light." To unearth the secret of piety and understand religion. But no matter how hard I've tried and closed my eyes to see God, when I open them again nothing is different. Someone once said to me, "God's light shines on you." Oh, if it were only true. I'd love to feel the warmth if it were so. But so often I feel cold and alone. These are not my eyes in the photo--but another young woman's. Maybe she is looking into the light of God. I hope so. I wish I could see this magic so many people believe.
