Their inspiration for a style of resistance never before seen in Russia, was the riot grrrl punk movement, including groups like Kathleen Hanna’s Bikini Kill, and flash mobs. The young women of the collective, average age 25, have revealed only the smallest details about their lives. None will divulge their day jobs. They only use first-names. In the two weeks since their mid-January action, the all-female group has become a potent symbol of anger at the status quo in Russian society and their videos have gone viral all over the world. Like many young people in Russia, the members of the Pussy Riot collective are furious at Vladamir Putin’s plans to seek the presidency again and his return was the impetus behind the formation of the group (as well as their song “Putin Has Pissed Himself”). http://www.freeturbine.com/index.php/news/general-music-news/item/pussy-riot-revolt-in-russia-putin-s-got-scaredTheir inspiration for a style of resistance never before seen in Russia, was the riot... more

It's an exhibition to see and to listen to the one that from January 14 to February 3, 2012, the Palazzo Reale in Palermo, the Sicilian Parliament building, dedicates to BIOS Vincent, a young artist from Trapani, who lives and works between China and Italy. "The wall sounds", curated by Martina Cavallarin, is BIOS first solo show in Palermo, expected return in his homeland after the recent artistic experiences in China, in Boston and Berlin.
The exhibition is under the patronage of the Sicilian District, the Sicilian Regional Assembly and the Fondazione Federico II, and promoted by Sicilian Association Promotion, with the contribution of Galleria Affiche Milan and Galleria 71 Palermo. Sponsored by URSA Italy SrL.
THE EXHIBITION
BIOS builds for Palazzo Reale a most unusual path, which runs from the lower floor, where the visitors are greeted by video with the artist's performative acts, to the central hall on the upper floor, where a labyrinthine installation consisting of more than 40 works envelops the visitors in large coils of matter by strong colors that take over and lead to the great wall entirely covered by a work of considerable emotional dimensions.
Facing the panels sprinkled with cement, perforated by bullets of various calibers, Magnum, sinkers, Lupara, and the wall installations with numbers, words, letters, signs violated by a specific and targeted use of firearms, the visitors are carried away by the echo of an invisible firearm shot, of answers ever given, of unexpected gifts, a disillusioned hope or an erased memory.
BIOS looks at the world from the hole inflicted by bullets on its surfaces and its art looks like self-taught, but rather is borrowed from a unique cultural journey from ancient manuscripts such as graphics or medieval literature, engravings, sacred art and an imaginary visionary - says exhibition curator Martina Cavallarin.
BIOS has a personal research that investigates the social dimension focusing on topics such as abortion, ecology, oppression, violence, physical and mental barriers through an art that uses performance - in which the hunters shoot virtually on its prey, a metaphor for excellence, or in which the artist portrays the "Pinocchio" and simulated crucifixions - and wall installations, paintings that becomes sculptures welcoming color, scarification, objects surrounded by numbers like logo - as the 194, a figure that evokes the number of abortion law in Italy - or words, letters written.
"Those of Vincent's are the walls of life, telling the story of men who have lived - writes the architect Michele Premoli Silva who designed the exhibition - Walls that, like those of houses in places of combat or conflict, marked by bursts of bullets that have carved their alphabet, remembering that broken lives. BIOS has chosen to tell the life of the world through the wall".
Accompanies the exhibition a prestigious catalog published by Fondazione Federico II Editore in three languages - Italian | English | Chinese - with critical essays by Martina Cavallarin | Micol Di Veroli | Michele Premoli Silva

Two local petrolheads are set to represent High Wycombe in an exciting new grassroots motorsport series taking place at Santa Pod Raceway on August 21st. Luke Woodham and Cliff Judson are amongst hundreds of UK racers that are heading to Santa Pod Raceway to compete in the Fueltopia barrel Sprint series (FBS).
The Fueltopia Barrel Sprint is a new form of racing that crosses drag racing with drifting. Competitors must go head-to-head against each other as they navigate 360 degrees around three barrels over a 100 meter sprint. Each lane is timed and the fastest car to cross the line is the winner.
Luke Woodham, has entered the FBS series in his tuned Nissan 200SX. The car is rear-wheeled drive and has been set-up for the art of drifting having had the interior removed and roll cage fitted. Luke has always had a penchant for speed from racing motorcross at an early age he has progressed through bikes to cars. The FBS series allows anyone with a road legal car and a driving licence to enter, keeping racing off the streets and on the track so therefore fully supported by these two local racers.
He’ll not be entering alone and will be joined by Cliff Judson who is a familiar face on the drag racing circuit. Cliff drives a modified Nissan R33 Skyline GTR that has been set up for drag racing. The FBS is something new and Cliff is keen to put his driving and his car to the challenge, he says “ I’ll freely admit that this is a huge challenge, friends have forever mocked my lack of circuit driving ability, even though I won the street class title in the 2008 Pro Street Drag series.”

In the early part of the 20th Century, beer drinkers had only two choices when it came to quenching their thirst for a delicious frothy beverage: draught beer or bottles. It wasn’t until the 1930s that canned beer arrived on the scene. Initially, tin cans could not withstand the carbonated pressure and burst. Eventually, technological developments and the introduction of a vinyl liner proved successful in containing the pressure. Then in 1935, Kruger’s Brewery of New Jersey introduced the first canned beer–Kruger’s Finest Beer–to the market, revolutionizing the beer industry. The canned versus bottled beer debate has raged ever since, and now the emerging mircrobrew trend is putting a new spin on the topic.
The traditional debate has centered on factors including taste, convenience, and cost. Beer is a sensitive beverage and exposure to both light and oxygen results in off-flavors. The caps on bottles are not completely airtight, creating a chemical reaction between oxygen and the hops, whereas cans are impervious to both light and oxygen, protecting the flavor, reducing chances of creating a “skunky” amora, and extending the shelf life. Although proponents of bottles have remained steadfast in the claim that cans produce a metallic taste, there has been little empirical evidence to support the claim. Additionally, the lightweight and portability of cans often prove to be more convenient than bottles for both consumers and producers. In regards to shipping efficiency, the longneck design on bottles wastes packaging space, while cans are able to be efficiently packaged and weigh less, which allows more to be shipped at less cost.
With recent concerns regarding sustainability, overall environmental impact has become a new point of contention in this debate. In evaluating the environmental impact of cans versus bottles, there are many factors to consider, including raw material sourcing, processing techniques, recycling rates, the distance of the container manufacturer to the brewery, and the distance of the brewery to the distribution point. Most certainly, manufacturing aluminum cans is extremely resource intensive. The mining, refining, processing and transporting of bauxite ore, from which aluminum is derived, leaves an extensive trail of carbon emissions in its wake. Contrastingly, bottles are made from the more abundant resource silica and glass processing has lower overall emissions rates. However, the recycling rate for glass in the US is only 28% compared to the nearly 55% recycling rate for aluminum cans. Moreover, beer bottles contain only 20-30% recycled glass in comparison to the average beer can that is made of 40% recycled aluminum. Recycled aluminum requires 95% less energy and produces 95% less greenhouse gas emissions than manufacturing new aluminum.

“Staging Action: Performance in Photography Since 1960” presents a wide range of images focusing on performance art that were expressly made for the artist’s camera, which was recently on exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Performance art is usually experienced live, but what documents it and ensures its enduring life is, above all, photography. Yet photography plays a constitutive role, not merely a documentary one, when the performance is staged expressly for the camera (often in the absence of an audience), and the images that result are recordings of an event but also autonomous works of art. The pictures in this exhibition exemplify the complex and varied uses artists have devised for photography in the field of performance art since the 1960s.
Many artists have experimented with the camera to test the physical and psychological limits of the body. Other artists have enlisted the camera as an accomplice in experiments with identity, suggesting the plasticity or mutability of identity itself. They have engaged the production of the self as positional rather than fixed and often played with shifting ideas of gender and/or sexual identity. The exhibition also includes both off-the-cuff and staged performative gestures of political dissent, as well as explorations of the dualities of consumerism and dispossession.
“Staging Action” demonstrates the complex ways in which photography, confronting us with its ability to both freeze and extend a moment in time, pushes against the grain of mere documentation to create performance art as a conceptual exercise that can be appreciated in the absence of a performing body. Often the technology of the camera is able to open up new space for performance, isolating exhibitionist, arresting, spectacular and just plain wacky moments. For every strenuous performance in this collection that challenges physical and psychological limits, there’s also a very playful one.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution vintage photographs, an engrossing photo-gallery and a documentary short film.
