"You certainly cannot take over a New York City street. That is a serious situation. We have emergency vehicles to get through, people have actually jobs to get to, unlike these protestors, apparently," said Vallone. "And the police have every right to use the force that they deem necessary to arrest if people aren't cooperating."
Vallone went on to say he believes the NYPD acted well within its rights.
Okay, Queens Residents , please be advised that your councilman, Peter Vallone has basically accused people that are trying to call attention to crimes against all of us committed by Wall Street executives, of being unimportant and jobless nuisances.
Speaking from a location that does not look like where the Wall Street protestors seemed to be and not an eye witness to police actions that took place, this "councilman", a representative of his constituents, is making comments without direct knowledge about events occurring toward citizens that are upset with criminal activity and legally protesting.
Apparently, abusing protestors is okay when you can baselessly assume that they are all unemployed according to this elected official.
Please take that into consideration next time you are voting for Queens City Council."You certainly cannot take over a New York City street. That is a serious... more

"During his annual budget address today, Mayor Michael Bloomberg will announce that he is sticking with a plan to lay off thousands of city teachers.
Sources say Bloomberg plans to announce that 4,666 teachers will be laid off, with an additional 1,500 positions cut through attrition. "
Here we go again. Education sure gets hit hard when there's a budget gap to close. I'm pretty sure there will be some far reaching consequences attached to such an action.
What do you guys make of this? What will happen when that many teachers get the axe? What should be cut instead of teachers jobs?
There's a short video after the jump."During his annual budget address today, Mayor Michael Bloomberg will announce... more

For me, drag represents all that’s right in the world:
- Confidence in the face of adversity
- Acceptance of an alternative point of view
- Glitter
- Creative expression
- Gender as a fluid state of being
- Overall silliness
- Feminine power
These men know more about finding strength within femininity than I do. I may not be a helpless case (see Ru Paul’s DragU), but I do have a lot to learn. They can twist and turn and point the right body parts in the right direction. And more than this, they know how to persevere.

It was circulating all over the web. At first, I thought it was just an ordinary video clip of gay fans... But then again, I was wrong. These proud Filipino queens decided to tape themselves watching the Miss Universe pageant. and then they went crazy, like off the hook crazy, when the name of The Philippines' representative, Miss Venus Raj, to the Miss Universe Pageant was announced among the top 15 candidates. Their reaction... Priceless! I just had to laugh my ass off over this one. It was a MAJOR, MAJOR LOL!
Click the link to see the video... I promise, you won't regret it... LOL!

“Anything You Synthesize” is an entrancing cinematic music video, directed by Kasper Verweij at the Dutch studio Onesize for the Queens (NY) post-rock duo, The American Dollar. The video turns the group's experimental ambient sonic music into an enveloping sensory experience, traversing a solemn landscape decaying from a beautiful fresh mountain-view-landscape into a dead, flat desert. During the journey one views both night and day, as well as the passing of the year’s four seasons. The concluding scenes convey a seemingly happy ending, but you know what’s actually going to happen.
After you start the video, please click to view it in HD-Full Screen. Also, if you have your headphones within reach, I recommend that you use them.
This piece includes colorful photographs, as well as the remarkable, stunning music video.

While working as a waiter in NYC I overheard some guests (tourists) commenting that, because they had not seen any, there are no more homeless people in New York anymore. This reminded me of when I lived in Waikiki and would go on pre-dawn runs. Homeless people were everywhere, but once the sun rose the cops arrived and woke them, then proceeded to kick them off the street. The tourists never saw the homeless. It made me think of how we try not to see the homeless, and that day at work, overhearing the tourists, I thought of this again. The next day I befriended two homeless people who I pass everyday on my way to work. Later, I returned with a camera and they agreed to let me film them while answering some questions regarding their lifestyle. This is what came of that meeting..While working as a waiter in NYC I overheard some guests (tourists) commenting that,... more

Artist NohJColey uses the streets of New York City as his canvas. His latest work Sprayed N Stone is a tribute to three well known graffiti artists who passed away before their time. Tie was a San Francisco teenager who brought so much energy to the world of graffiti that artists across the country paid tribute to him when they learned of his untimely passing at 18. When you talk about Sace, all you can say was his whole life was art. Millions of kids lived vicariously through the photos that graced the pages of Vice magazines for years. He was just starting to be taken very seriously in the international high art world when he tragically passed this summer. And finally Iz the Wiz is an artist that inspired a generation, from trains to streets Iz was the definition of old school New York graffiti. NohJColey has created this tribute to these 3 artists to remind us of their contributions and to pay homage to those that provided inspiration.
This work is a linoleum print and acrylic wash on paper with seven color paper subtraction pasted on a metal wall.Artist NohJColey uses the streets of New York City as his canvas. His latest work... more

Germany has restored the 1936 high jump record to a 95-year-old Queens woman who was kicked off the Nazi Olympic team because she was Jewish.
Margaret Bergmann Lambert was banned from the Berlin Olympics despite matching the high-jump record of 5 feet 3 inches to qualify and having spent two years on the team, starting in 1934.
"I was a person nonexisting because I was a Jew," Lambert told the Daily News on Monday night from her home in Jamaica.
The German track and field association has recognized Lambert, born Gretel Bergmann, several times over the years but never went as far as restoring her record.
While the honor "can in no way make up" for the past, it serves as an "act of justice and a symbolic gesture," the committee said Monday.
Lambert said the honor "doesn't bother me one way or another. If it would never of happened I wouldn't have killed myself either," she said.
She still remembers the anger she felt when the Olympic team told her she couldn't compete in the 1936 games.
"I had so much fury," she said. "I went home and planned to come to the United States."
Adding to the insult was the athlete who the Nazis selected to replace her: a jumper named Dora Ratjen - who was later revealed to be a man whose real name was Horst Ratjen.
Ratjen was kicked off the team in 1938 when a doctor took a look at his genitals.
Lambert fled Nazi Germany in 1937 and landed in New York. She moved in with her brother, who was already living on the upper West Side.
"All the Jewish immigrants were scattered on Broadway and 80th and 90th," she said. "We all lived together there and helped each other out."
She worked as a house cleaner and met her husband, Bruno Lambert, 99, who still lives with her in Queens. They had two sons and have been married 71 years.
Lambert became an American champion in women's high jump in 1937 and 1938 and women's shot put in 1937. She decided to give it up when war broke out in 1939.

"Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp. was ordered to pay $104.7 million in damages after a jury found the company liable for poisoning New York City water wells with a gasoline additive meant to improve air quality.
A federal jury in New York ruled in the city’s favor today. New York accused Exxon Mobil, the biggest U.S. oil company, of contaminating five wells in and near the Jamaica area of the borough of Queens with methyl tertiary butyl ether, or MTBE."
One more excerpt:
"MTBE renders water undrinkable by making it smell and taste like turpentine, according to the city. The compound can cause dizziness, nausea and nervous-system disorders, New York said. The city said it also may cause cancer, which Exxon Mobil denies."
At last a bit of justice, although to them these millions are crumbs."Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- Exxon Mobil Corp. was ordered to pay $104.7 million in... more
