Whether you are a fan of the original reality show MTV's Real World or not, it seems to have taken a subtle route to promote being green.
The Real World is considered by many as far away from being "real" as possible, but has always tried to bring issues to the forefront. With this season based in DC some of the current issues that have been brought up just in the first two weeks are politics, religion, sexuality, and whether a resident was a virgin or not.
Tonight I was watching the latest episode and noticed an interesting sign behind two of the residents who were sitting at the community house PC. The sign says "Go Green or Go Home". For those that do not know or watch Real World, the house PC is a central part of the show as each member usually uses the same PC and the area gets some good screen time, which means so will the sign.
Additionally one of the residents was a vegan and they focused on her being concerned about her health.http://www.greenwala.com/community/blogs/all/4249-MTV-s-Real-World-DC-Goes-Green?f=true... more

D.C. officials Wednesday said they would proceed cautiously if Congress lifts a federal roadblock to implementing a voter initiative approved more than a decade ago that called for legalizing medical marijuana.
Congress is poised to pass an omnibus spending bill that will not include a rider known as the Barr Amendment, which has blocked the District from legalizing medical marijuana.
The Barr Amendment has banned the city from funding legalization efforts since 1998, when 69 percent of voters cast ballots approving the use of medical marijuana in the District.
Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray called the removal of the ban a victory for home rule. A spokeswoman for Mr. Gray said the chairman would meet with members to discuss how to proceed.
"This just happened. It's too early to say what will happen." Gray spokeswoman Doxie McCoy said.
Council member Phil Mendelson, chairman of the council's Committee on Public Safety and the Judiciary, said he, too, was unsure of how to treat the initiative after so much time.
"It's been 11 years since anyone has looked at this," he said. "I don't know what the next steps should be."
D.C. Attorney General Peter J. Nickles said only, "I'm studying it. It's a complex issue."
A spokeswoman for the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics said that voter initiatives such as the medical marijuana initiative are transmitted to the council after they are passed and the council then submits the measures to Congress, which has 30 sitting days to take action against the initiative.
Bruce Mirken, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, said the absence of the Barr Amendment, originally added by former Rep. Bob Barr, then a Republican from Georgia, paves the way for legalization of medical marijuana.
"The residents who need medical marijuana will have a cloud removed from over them," Mr. Mirken said. "It's time D.C. pulls this law out of the mothballs."
Mr. Mirken said he does not expect the Democratic Congress to overturn the initiative. He said that if the measure passes, the city's Department of Health would be responsible for developing plans for the safe distribution of medical marijuana.
D.C. Department of Health spokeswoman Dena Iverson agreed, saying the agency's responsibility is to regulate health issues in the District. Those duties include licensing pharmacies.
Initiative 59 was primarily pushed by the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power known as ACT UP. The group got a second chance in February 1998 to collect signatures to get the initiative on the ballot after falling short of the required number by 800 and having 4,000 disqualified

In an interview with MTV, Comedian/actor Dane Cook says that he would be interested in playing The Riddler in the next Batman movie.
Dane says "If they brought back the Riddler - a new Riddler the way they did with the Joker that would be badass. I would do that... When they were making the new one and they were doing the Joker, I always thought it [should be] kind of like The Crow - having that dark element but still comedic... [My performance] would probably have to be something in that vein, even though I think what Heath Ledger did with the Joker was the greatest comic book villain ever."

Unless Virginia Governor Tim Kaine steps in, the state will execute John Allen Muhammad the "Beltway sniper" tonight at 9pm. Yesterday the Supreme Court declined to hear Muhammad's appeal (clipped by LadybugLady).
Muhammad, along with his teenage accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo, was responsible for a 2002 killing spree in the DC area that left 10 people dead. The shootings targeted everyday people in everyday locations like gas stations. They were all the more frightening because they were unpredictable and without motive. It had just been a year since the September 11th attacks and for the period while the shootings were taking place, it was a a new wave of terror for Washington-area residents.
Muhammad has maintained his innocence. His accomplice, Malvo, is serving life in prison without parole. (Ironically, a case that the Supreme Court did hear yesterday was on whether life without parole was cruel and unusual punishment for teenagers.)
We've been looking at the death penalty a lot in the last few weeks, mostly because of the case of Cameron Todd Willingham in Texas - where the state may have executed an innocent man. With a case like that, opposition to the death penalty seems practical: let's prevent mistakes from occurring. The Muhammad case is a bit different. It falls along the line of retribution - why Obama says he's supports the death penalty, despite doubts about its efficacy: "the community is justified in expressing the full measure of its outrage."
What do you think? Is the community justified in this instance? In any instance?
