There has been a lot of talk about how our society is becoming increasingly cashless and there have also been many of proponents of the idea. If one thing the persecution of Julian Assange has shown its how such a system could be used to limit freedom of speech. Say something the government doesn't like? Your cash flow is frozen. Not to surprisingly one of the biggest proponents for this idea works at Wired. I think many of those on the left are also sucked in by the allure of being 'completely digital'.
