Goodman Charged with Obstruction; Felony Riot Charges Pending Against Kouddous and Salazar
ST. PAUL–Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman and producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar have all been released from police custody in St. Paul following their illegal arrest by Minneapolis Police on Monday afternoon.
All three were violently manhandled by law enforcement officers. Abdel Kouddous was slammed against a wall and the ground, leaving his arms scraped and bloodied. He sustained other injuries to his chest and back. Salazar’s violent arrest by baton-wielding officers, during which she was slammed to the ground while yelling, “I’m Press! Press!,” resulted in her nose bleeding, as well as causing facial pain. Goodman’s arm was violently yanked by police as she was arrested.

Dandelion Salad
It was a wonderful protest in the heat today as well over 10,000 (I'd guess up to 20,000) people marched from the state capitol to the downtown convention center where the Republican National Convention (RNC) is being held. The march, led by a delegation of people of color and then Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), was warmly cheered by thousands of people who stood along the parade route...

The Navajo Nation’s Ongoing Battle Against Uranium Mining
We look at the ongoing battle over uranium mining in the Navajo Nation. Mining has occurred on Navajo territory for over fifty years and the impact is still being felt. We speak with the directors of the Eastern Navajo Dine Against Uranium Mining and the Southwest Research and Information Center....
We are broadcasting from New Mexico–home to the Navajo Nation. For decades they have been fighting an ongoing battle against uranium mining on their land. Last April, Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley approved legislation banning uranium mining on Navajo territory. There is currently no mining on the Navajo reservation but Hydro Resources Inc. has been working with the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission for years to try to get approval for mining near the Navajo communities of Crownpoint and Church Rock, New Mexico. The company estimates nearly one-hundred million pounds of uranium exists on those sites making it worth millions of dollars.
Uranium mining occurred on the Navajo Reservation for over fifty years and the impact is still felt. The land has been dotted with contaminated tailings and hundreds of abandoned mines that have not been cleaned up.March 02, 2006

Marijuana Arrests at Record Level
Figures released by the FBI the week of September 20, 2006 showed marijuana arrests are at an all time high. More than seven-hundred eighty thousand people were arrested in 2005 for marijuana violations. That?s over forty percent of all drug arrests in the United States. Almost nine in ten were arrested for possession. Allen St. Pierre of NORML - The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws said: "Arresting hundreds of thousands of Americans who smoke marijuana responsibly needlessly destroys the lives of otherwise law abiding citizens? It makes no sense to continue to treat nearly half of all Americans as criminals for their use of a substance that poses no greater health risks than alcohol or tobacco.?
And people wonder why we can't afford the art department at their local school. Imagine if we invested all the money we waste on the WAR ON DRUGS in our schools, our hospitals and other essential services.
We don't just fight the WAR ON DRUGS in America, we do it all over the world. CAMP in Jamaica and our soldiers in the jungles of Columbia are just two examples. Hello, tap tap. Is this thing on? Is anyone else getting it? Am I wrong?
I'm reminded of a poem:
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
No more wars period.Marijuana Arrests at Record Level
