Kanye goes to Venezuela

I use tumblr, to keep tapped into the pulse of the world's meme-o-sphere. I follow a lot of people in New York and Los Angeles. Somehow I follow lot's of Venezuelans. This is how I discovered the unrest in the online community over crackdowns on media by Hugo Chavez. It wasn't that funny so I forwarded that info on to Current's news man, Andrew Fitzgerald, who wrote a blog post about it.

Luckily this latest picture from the Venezuelan meme factory is funny.

This picture depicts the president of Venezuela being told to shut up by everyone's favorite interrupter-of-the-moment, Kanye West. This picture would evoke a laugh from any anti-Chavista. (I imagine Bill O'Reilly would love this picture, hates Hugo Chavez, and loves telling people to shut up.) But to the nuanced Latin meme-ster, this picture is a mashup of ideas.

It references an event from November 2007. At the Ibero-American summit, Hugo Chavez interrupted José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the Spanish prime minister. Then Juan Carlos, King of Spain, leaned forward, turned towards Chávez, and said "¿Por qué no te callas?"

This outburst was well received in sectors of Ibero-America, especially by those who feel that Chavismo is too radical. This video quickly became viral, and prompted several notable versions. (My favorite one is the Reggaeton style.) The phrase "¿Por qué no te callas?" was emblazoned on t-shirts, and even became a popular ringtone.

The above picture connects this meme to the meme-of-the-week. In a sort of cosmic revenge, the new interrupter, is interrupting the old interrupter.

This anti-Chavez imagery speaks to something the socio-political position that these Venezuelan tumblrs hold. In a nation like Venezuela there is vast disparity between the rich and the poor. Chavez's objective to redistribute wealth is something that affluent people are not excited about. (Along with general distaste for Chavez's pushes for lifelong autocracy.)

I think we (the meme-o-sphere) see so much opposition to Hugo Chavez, because many of his supporters often don't have access to the internet. You probably don't have time for funny internet videos, when you live in the slums of Caracas.

Chavez: Prepare for war

Amid all the news out there this Monday morning (health care bills, awakened Ft. Hood shooters, menacing Gulf hurricanes, over-bonused bankers) this little gem caught my eye.

From the AP: Chavez to troops: Prepare for war with Colombia

"President Hugo Chavez ordered Venezuela's military on Sunday to prepare for a possible armed conflict with Colombia, saying the country's soldiers should be ready if the United States attempts to provoke a war between the South American neighbors. "The best way to avoid war is preparing for it," Chavez told military officers standing at attention during his weekly television and radio program."

Chavez is worried about the influence the US exerts over Colombia, their military cooperation, and argues that the Obama Administration could try to stir up a conflict between the two South American nations (because they're not busy enough?). From the Venezuelan perspective a new military pact between the US and Colombia threatens the region's stability.

"According to Francisco Javier Arias, deputy Foreign Minister of Venezuela, Colombia signed a pact with the U.S. allowing the Americans to freely use Colombian military bases and airports to secure the "continuity of the empire." "President Uribe is putting the region at risk to secure his re-election, dragging an elephant like the United States into a china shop, with the idea of solve problems that this northern country is not interested in," the official told Colombian Caracol Radio.

Chavez ordered 15,000 additional Venezuelan troops to the border. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe plans to appeal to the UN Security Council.

SYNCHRONICITY

Synchronicities are those moments of “meaningful coincidence” when the boundary dissolves between the inner and the outer. At the synchronistic moment, just like a dream, our internal, subjective state appears, as if materialized in, as and through the outside world. Touching the heart of our being, synchronicities are moments in time in which there is a fissure in the fabric of what we have taken for reality and there is a bleed through from a higher dimension outside of time. Synchronicities are expressions of the dreamlike nature of reality, as they are moments in time when the timeless, dreamlike nature of the universe shines forth its radiance and openly reveals itself to us, offering us an open doorway to lucidity.

Synchronicity was one of Jung’s most profound yet least understood discoveries, in part because it cannot be appreciated until we personally step into and experience the synchronistic realm for ourselves. Jung’s discovery of synchronicity was in a sense the parallel in the realm of psychology to Einstein’s discovery of the law of relativity in physics. Because it is so radically discontinuous with our conventional notions of the nature of reality, the experience of synchronicity is so literally mind-blowing that Jung contemplated this phenomenon for over twenty years before he published his thinking about it. Jung’s synchronistic universe was a new world view which embraced linear causality while simultaneously transcending it. A synchronistic universe balances and complements the mechanistic world of linear causality with a realm that is outside of space, time and causality. In a synchronicity, two heterogeneous world-systems, the causal and acausal, interlock and interpenetrate each other for a moment in time, which is both an expression of while creating in the field an aspect of our wholeness to manifest.
