This video is about an organic garden started by history teacher Theo Hartman at Hayward High School. Starting as a Saturday volunteer program, it has evolved into an ecology center with a heavy focus on education, providing hands-on lessons on composting, landscaping, irrigation, and nutrition for the students. A 20k grant from PG&E brought a solar collector to the garden providing electricity to areas on campus. With the help of an additional $250k grant Hayward High School is quickly becoming a green academy in the center of an urban community. For Hartman and his students, going green is not just a catchy phrase, but words to live by.
This video was created as an educational tool for ESL teachers by Catherine Hartman, a teacher at San Francisco City College. Accompanying the video, teachers are provided with a lesson plan for their students. This project was created in collaboration with City College and KQED.
