At Morning Edition, we've been finishing 2009 by catching up on great music we didn't get a chance to tell you about this year. On the last day of the year, it's Them Crooked Vultures.
The story starts with a birthday party for Dave Grohl, who first became famous as the drummer for Nirvana, and later as the frontman for Foo Fighters. His party guests included John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age.
The trio sat down in a castle at a Medieval Times restaurant in Southern California. It featured knights in armor and live jousting.
"We began to talk over dragon's-breath soup, which is what they were serving," Homme says.
The idea looked good on paper.
"It read well," Homme says. "And so, after that initial meeting, we decided to test that paper chemistry, and we decided we had real chemistry."
They tested it in a secret jam session.
"The first one was sort of exploring the edges of our musicality together and trying to stump each other and realizing that wasn't very easy," Homme says.
So they came back for a second day and, in time, wrote an album. It was a chance for two younger musicians to play with one of the biggest stars of the '70s.
"You got this age thing — they're not that young," Jones says, laughing.
For Grohl, it was also a chance to return to his old instrument: the drums. For 15 years, he's been singing and playing guitar with Foo Fighters.
"Playing drums is like dancing," Grohl says. "People who think about their dancing aren't the greatest dancers in the world. And people who don't have to think about their drumming — they're some of the best drummers in the world. I don't really have to worry about it. I just do it."
As they play, the members of Them Crooked Vultures say they learn from each other.

I was one of the very, very lucky 1,000 souls who was able to see the world debut performance of supergroup "Them Crooked Vulchers," in Chicago this past weekend. The band includes Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, and Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. It was a miracle that we got tickets, they sold out in 2 minutes. And it wasn't cheap. And we waited in line for 4 1/2 hours to see them play. But every dollar and minute was worth it once these 3 music wizards walked onto stage and the crowd exploding in applause. I knew I was witnessing music history.
None of their album had been leaked onto the internet so no one in the crowd knew what to expect. The crowd whispered while waiting, "Are they going to play Zeppelin covers?" and "Will Grohl be on drums?" Everyone was clueless. But we knew it would be great either way.
And it was. The group put on an astonishing 80 minute performance of their entire album that was so hard and rocking, most of the time I stood there in awe. Dave Grohl was in his zone. He is such an incredible performer to watch. John Paul Jones seemed to revert back to his days with Zeppelin, pulling out bass instruments I never even knew existed. And Homme was busy on lead guitar and vocals, seducing the audience. Think loud, heavy, and bringing back a sound I thought rock n' roll had lost for some time. It was truly a night to remember and one to go down in the books. Definitely look out for their album coming out sometime later this year.
I'm sitting here typing this with my wrist band still on, and I'm thinking of keeping it on for a few more days...I was one of the very, very lucky 1,000 souls who was able to see the world debut... more

Third Man Records, the imprint on which Jack White releases all of his music including The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, now has a physical location in downtown Nashville. White's new Third Man Records building serves as the company HQ and houses the label's offices plus a vinyl record store, photo studio, dark room and performance stage.
In celebration of the building's opening, the label’s newest rock outfit, The Dead Weather, delivered their first public performance with a set including songs from their forthcoming album, Horehound. The band, fronted by Alison Mosshart (known to music fans as one half of The Kills) includes The Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence on bass, Dean Fertita from Queens Of The Stone Age on guitar and Jack White on drums and vocals. In addition to playing, White also served as producer on Horehound. Recording took place earlier this year in just three weeks at the newly constructed Third Man Studio, designed from the ground up by White. Third Man plans a June release for the album.
Around 150 fans, family and friends attended the Third Man Records grand opening event and exchanged their letter-pressed invitations for limited edition 7" vinyl pressings of The Dead Weather's debut single "Hang You From The Heavens" (b/w a stealth cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?"). The Dead Weather hand painted each of the 150 7" records that also included a different photo booth strip of the band members. Downloads of these two songs are now available exclusively through iTunes.Third Man Records, the imprint on which Jack White releases all of his music including... more
