As Sydney prepares for a visit by Pope Benedict XVI and 225,000 young pilgrims, the city's brothels are readying themselves for an expected surge in demand for sex.
"The World Council of Churches, when they had their congress in Canberra back in the 1990s, was the best business period ever", says Sydney brothel manager.
The Eros Association, Australia's adult industry group, said sex shops and brothels across Sydney are expecting "huge turnover" during World Youth Day.
"We know the kind of people who visit prostitutes and adult shops, many of them do it because of their own personal repression," Eros spokesman Robbie Swan told AFP. "And often it's because of religion. Our industry is the forbidden fruit industry."

SYDNEY AFP Reports:
"A middle-aged man who is auctioning his life over the Internet was Sunday celebrating as bidders fought over who would take his job, home and friends, as he seeks to start over again. The British immigrant to Australia, who said the trigger for his bold offer was the break-up with his wife, had hoped he would attract a bid of 500,000 dollars (477,000 US)."

Call me an old fogey, but I just don't get the concept of queuing for a store opening. Apple is tonight opening it's first store in the southern hemisphere, in Sydney - my hometown. While it is an impressive building, and all it contains is awesome in terms of technological beauty and usability, queuing overnight to be the first in just doesn't make sense to me.
The first 2500 customers through the door receive a gift - not an iPod, a Macbook, or anything remotely electronic, in fact, but a t-shirt. Woooowwww!!!
Sorry, don't get. I'll wait till the crowds die down, and then pay a visit. The shop isn't likely to be moving anywhere soon.Call me an old fogey, but I just don't get the concept of queuing for a store... more

people invest so much time and money in their children, and focus on the fleeting moments of joy they bring, rather than on the long periods of boredom and irritation, that most continue to believe children will bring them happiness, says Professor Gilbert.

"Pope Benedict will text message thousands of young Catholics on their mobile phones during World Youth Day in Sydney in July, hoping going digital will help him connect better with a younger audience.
The Pope will text daily messages of inspiration and hope during the six-day Sydney event while digital prayer walls will be erected at event sites and the church will set up a Catholic social networking Web site akin to a Catholic Facebook.
The Catholic Church said it decided to use technology to connect to the estimated 225,000 young Catholics expected to attend the World Youth Day (WYD) celebrations that start on July 15.
"We wanted to make WYD08 a unique experience by using new ways to connect with today's tech-savvy youth," Bishop Anthony Fisher said in a statement on Wednesday.
Australian telecoms firm Telstra will provide voice, data, mobile, broadband and broadcast services for the event, as well as erect digital prayer walls at event sites. Telstra said it plans to connect 8,000 volunteers, 2,000 clergy, 3,000 media and an anticipated 225,000 pilgrims to more than 700 locations around Sydney.""Pope Benedict will text message thousands of young Catholics on their mobile... more

The protests organised by the online group that call themselves anonymous have begun in Sydney Australia. Around 150 people gathered around the Church of Scientology headquarters carrying picket signs and wearing masks condeming the church as a money laundering cult. The doors to the church were locked and the protesters were filmed from inside, confirming fears that the Church may seek legal retribution.
It looks a strange and uniquely 21st century phenomenon, people with a common identity have never met but have managed to organise worldwide protests with a good turn out on very short notice.
It goes to show how powerful the internet is making people...The protests organised by the online group that call themselves anonymous have begun... more

New animated video from superlative Aussie electronica duo PNAU. There really are no words to say...
(...other than "I'd rather go and pick some of those Wild Stawberries. Pick em' up, c'mon pick em up!")
NB the kung fu strawberry fighting/dancing with Pac Man ghosts. Saw that one coming! ha!
In all seriousness, PNAU is one of my favorite acts in the nebula, they singlehandedly turned me on to electronica when I was studying abroad in Sydney. They have a new self titled album out now that's getting a lot of love down unda and their first album, 'Sambanova' is nothing short of a house masterpiece.

Officials in Sydney Australia have instructed Santa's that they are not allowed to say 'Ho Ho Ho' because it may be offensive to women. So, instead they have to say 'Ha Ha Ha."
You know what I say... Give me a break!
