How Different Are Same-Sex Couples from Different-Sex Couples?

Today 52.8% of voters in Maine rejected a law legalizing gay marriage. Arguments on both sides of the debate are often highly emotional, and "information" campaigns have at times targeted people's fears more than discussing relevant policy dimensions and welfare concerns (e.g. the right to be included in a partner's health care plan). One far too often stated opposition to gay marriage is the idea that allowing homosexual couples to marry would change what it means to be married (by introducing something "diffreent") and thereby erode the institution of marriage. But how different are homosexual marriages from heterosexual marriages really? The 2008 American Community Survey (ACS) provides us with some valuable information on the topic. One finding that sticks out is the fact that married same-sex couples are very similar to different sex-married couples on the most important demographic dimensions. For example, same-sex married couples are similarly educated, earn the same amount of income, and even raise almost the same amount of children. It is especially this last finding that strikes most people as surprising, and hopefully surprise can lead to information-seeking and reconsideration of overhauled attitudes for some. Other interesting facts from the American Community Survey include:

* "More than 1 in 4 (nearly 150,000) same-sex couples designated themselves as spouses.

* Many same-sex couples considered themselves to be spouses even though they may not be legally married or in a legally recognized partnership.

* By the end of 2008, approximately 32,000 same-sex couples had been married in the US and more than 80,000 same-sex couples registered as reciprocal beneficiaries or domestic partners or were united in civil unions.

* Same-sex spouses were identified in every state. However, they were more common in states that permit marriage for same-sex couples or offer other forms of partnership recognition.

* Same-sex couples were more likely to call themselves spouses in states that recognize marriages of same-sex couples - 31% of same-sex couples in states with marriage recognition identified themselves as spouses.In states with no form of recognition, only 26% identified as spouses.

* Massachusetts, the first state to permit marriage for same-sex couples in 2004, had an estimated 3.63 same-sex spousal couples per 1,000 households in 2008, ranking first among all states. Vermont, which has offered civil unions since 2000, ranked second at 2.71. The remaining top five states ranked by same-sex spouse prevalence were Hawaii (2.43), Utah (2.32), and Wyoming (2.28).

* The District of Columbia had the highest prevalence of same-sex unmarried partners per 1,000 households (13.22), followed by Maine (6.81), Washington (5.84), Oregon (5.73), and New York (5.15).

* Same-sex couples, both married and unmarried were more prevalent in states that had some form of legal recognition for same-sex couples than in states that had no recognition.

* Same-sex couples who identified themselves as spouses differed from same-sex couples who identified themselves as unmarried partners. "

A victory against hate considered a dark day for American Christianity.

Barrack Obama knew that in order to win the US Presidential election, he had to win over a large voting bloc: evangelical born-again Christians. So he put on a good act, tried to talk the talk, and managed to convince many gullible believers that he was one of them.

Of course now that he is firmly ensconced in the White House, he can leave all pretense behind, and pursue his real agenda – an agenda which is quite far removed from biblical Christianity. Each week he seems to implement more policies and practices which are diametrically opposed to the Christian worldview.

Many of these have to do with his radical pro-abortion position, and his relentless attempts to placate and promote homosexual activism. His most recent slap in the face of Christianity was his signing into law of the notorious “hate crimes” bill.

Yesterday he enacted the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act. The worrying hate crimes law was actually just one segment of a larger bill, so he in effect had to sneak it through, albeit sadly with the support of many federal politicians.

Tim Wildmon of the American Family Association said that the new law “creates a kind of caste system in law enforcement, where the perverse thing is that people who engage in non-normative sexual behavior will have more legal protection than heterosexuals. This kind of inequality before the law is simply un-American.”

Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute, said this: “It is fundamentally unjust for the government to treat some crime victims more favorably than others, just because they are homosexual or transsexual. This bill is an unnecessary federal intrusion into state law enforcement authority, and it is an unwise step toward silencing religious and moral viewpoints.”

“The fact the hate bill had to be passed in such an unscrupulous and cynical manner (attaching it to the Defense Authorization Act) reveals the depth of President Obama’s commitment to a radical, anti- Christian agenda. He will stop at nothing to undermine the will of the majority of Americans to pay back militant homosexual activists who raised millions of dollars for his campaign and worked to get him elected. To sign the bill in the Rose Garden is another slap in the face and shows the level of contempt President Obama has for the majority of Americans who oppose the ‘homosexualization’ of marriage and public education.”

And as Peter J. Smith notes, “The bill has also been labeled the ‘pedophile protection act,’ in large part due to the refusal of House members to approve an amendment specifying that the bill would not penalize the free speech of those objecting to homosexual perversions such as pedophilia. The term ‘sexual orientation’ is not defined in the bill, an oversight that some legislators charged could lead to an overly broad interpretation – since the term is used by psychologists to encompass a variety of sexual deviancies (including pedophilia), and not just homosexuality.”

The US now joins nations like Canada and England with these fundamentally flawed and unjust hate crimes laws. We already know the grief Christians in particular have been put through in these other nations because of such wretched laws. Now believers in the US will have their turn.

And of course there are activists here in Australia working on the very same thing. The only sure way these laws will come to pass here is if no resistance is offered. Are we willing to stand up and be counted, or will we simply cave in yet again, and allow more Christian freedoms to be stripped away? Clinton Arouses Gay Russian Wrath!

MOSCOW — Russia's leading gay activist said Wednesday that he was disappointed that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met with an outspoken foe of gay rights during her two-day trip to Russia and did not decry homophobia in the country.

Clinton attended a ceremony unveiling a statue of Walt Whitman at Moscow State University with Russian officials including Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov. Luzhkov has blocked all attempts to hold gay pride marches in Moscow, once saying they "can be described in no other way than as satanic."

Clinton did not mention of the issue during the ceremony. Some biographers have described Whitman as homosexual and U.S. gay activists have claimed him as symbol of their movement.

"Just as Pushkin and Whitman reset poetry we are resetting our relations for the 21st century," Clinton said. A statue of the revered Russian poet Alexander Pushkin was erected at George Washington University, in Washington, D.C., in 2000.

Luzhkov also compared Whitman to "our Alexander Pushkin" — but said he was quintessentially American.

"Whitman's poetry is imbued with the spirit of American optimism, the desire to create," Luzhkov said, according to the ITAR-Tass news agency. "Whitman did not accept the standards of poetry — he was an innovator."

It was not clear whether Luzhkov was aware of Whitman's status as a gay icon, and sponsors of the statue said they were honoring Whitman strictly for his contributions to literature.

"Whitman transcended his sexuality in his art and I would like to thank Mayor Luzhkov for welcoming him in his city and have absolutely nothing to say about those things," said James W. Symington, a former four-time congressman for Missouri and representative of the American-Russian Cultural Cooperation Foundation.

Gay activist Nikolai Alexeyev said Wednesday he was disappointed Clinton did not discuss discrimination against gays.

"Russia is supposed to be a democracy and she said nothing," he said.

Alexeyev had called on Clinton to denounce what he called entrenched and degrading homophobic attitudes in Russia at a news conference Tuesday.

A U.S. State Department spokesman said the department was unaware of any request from the Russian gay community.
