HIP HOP SLOWS DOWN AND GROWS UP by Carol Sigman Online Music Watchdog:

Never before in the history of Hip Hop, or it's culture has there been a single rap record created that allows today's hip hop heads, as well as non hip hop heads alike to take there partner by the hand and slow drag to thehttp://snd.sc/vxQC4B record,That's right I said “slow drag!” Wow, remember that form of dancing in the blue light basement parties in Brooklyn back in the 70's and 80's? Well unlike the current records that have been released over the years by artist such as Drake and Lil Wayne to respectfully name a few, I discovered an online joint that took me back to my younger years of pot smoking, class skipping ,and basement slow dragging parties all in one and it wasn't a traditional songster or even a singer for that matter this joint was, get this, performed by an artist known internationally as Gangster rapper! according to some of the online Google results I got when I started looking into this song I heard Sunday October 30th
I was in the kitchen of my small Brooklyn apartment when my 17 year old son asked if he could use our shared computer, like most of the time I said sure, no problem, I'd say about 20 minutes past when I noticed my son in the living room with the head phones on and his eyes closed nodding his head to this record, I panicked a little bit because my son is generally a very hyper teen music listener, and I usually hear small amounts of change jingling in his pockets or see him lip syncing and bouncing around to what ever he's listening too, but not that day. I walked up to him, pulled the headphones off one ear and asked him flat out, “alright Jamal, what girl got you listening to grown folks music?”
My son replied this ain't your grown folks music ma, this is our grown folks music
[referring to his age group]
So I asked him to start the record over, and he did, and I asked him, “Jamal,is this dude rapping to this music” and he said “yeah ma” I asked him who the rapper was and he said “Scarecrow”, I said “who?” and he said “his name is Hector but sometimes people call him Scarecrow”. I asked my son to burn me a copy of the song on a CD for my car and he did. Monday I called off from work to catch up on my house cleaning and get ready for trick or treaters, and take some me time, later that morning I Googled “Hector Scarecrow” and saw 423,000 hits for an Atlanta producer named Lord Hector Diono, and the song I was listening to was a joint called
“I Don't Know The Plan”. I saw it on soundcloud.com, but at the time I couldn't download this song my folder, it was streaming only and after that I started searching the web, I located him on facebook, linkedin, myspace, and a host of other sites all over the internet, so I sent him a private request on facebook. I asked Hector if it would be okay with him if I blogged my story about how I heard the first rap slow jam ever made and it was his song, and he sent me his phone number to discuss my request since I don't work for him, in short we spoke for about 15 minutes and to my surprise Hector sounds like a Caribbean gigolo on the phone {smiles} he said to me, “sure darling I don't see why not” WOW.. he sounded so good to me but enough of that, he even fixed it online where I'd be able to download this song for free after I explained to him that I couldn't download it because of the player settings and he fixed it just for me! Carol from Brooklyn! Hector told me that if I was going to blog him to be sure I spelled his name right and announce that it will be on iTunes on Saturday November 12 and to download his free Android app from https://market.android.com he didn't know I had found that info on the internet already I was going to write that anyway (smiles)

Wasp: A Searing Portrait of Poverty and Desperation

“Wasp” is an acclaimed short film directed by British filmmaker Andrea Arnold, which won the 2005 Academy Award for Live Action Short Film and the Short Filmmaking Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. “Wasp” has been credited as having revived the genre of social realism in British cinema, and this short film has gained the status of a modern classic through Arnold’s sensitive humanistic approach, combined with modern filmmaking techniques.

The film is a searing and intimate portrait of Zoë, a modern young woman in contemporary Britain, who is mired in poverty, but desperately wants something for herself aside from the oppressive limitations of being a single-mother of four. Despite the responsibility she bears, when a former crush unexpectedly resurfaces showing his first bit of romantic interest in her, she takes the opportunity to go out on a date, behaving in agonizingly irresponsible ways.

At another level, “Wasp” is a stinging critique of the painful worship of the faux-celebrity lives manufactured by today’s public relations pop-media machines. For Zoë, the Beckhams are the ideal, the epitome of the fashionably idolized, providing an illusory escape from the harsh realities of her own life. They’re the idealized depiction of a family with three terribly good-looking young sons, a family whose real existence never steps in the way of their living the glamorous life. For Zoë, the Beckhams represent the false pinnacle of desire: never-ending luxury, fashionable motherhood and physical perfection in marriage. But there’s a gut-wrenching sadness to Zoë’s idealized obsession, for she can barely even feed her own children.

It is just phenomenal how much this film gets right; the level of deftness in the writing and presentation is stellar. Having already noted that “Wasp” has achieved the status of a modern classic, it behooves you to watch this engrossing film. “Wasp” is a perfect reintroduction to dramatic live-action short films: it is almost mandatory viewing for short film fans. Enjoy.

Hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen put his iconic 1963 Andy Warhol silkscreen portrait of Elizabeth Taylor on the block at Phillips de Pury’s Manhattan auction house on May 12, 2011, and it sold for $26,962,500 Million.

“Liz #5” (1963) has been described as is a rare and exquisite example of the world renowned images of feminine grace that catapulted Warhol to prominence nearly 50 years ago. This glamorous portrait of the legendary actress, Elizabeth Taylor, embodies the most important themes of Warhol’s body of work, including his fascination with celebrity, real-life drama and the fleeting nature of beauty. One of the artist’s most instantly recognized images, “Liz #5” is said to be a testament to Warhol’s unique and unrivaled contribution to the visual arts. “Liz #5” was created at the height of the Taylor’s fame, which also coincided with the most significant and creative period of Warhol’s career. The epitome of old-world Hollywood style and glamor, Elizabeth Taylor, who died on March 23rd, was one of Warhol’s most famous inspirations, along with Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy.

Warhol’s 1962 Elizabeth Taylor work, “Men in Her Life,” went for $63.3 Million, the highest auction price paid in 2010 for a contemporary artwork and the second-highest auction price ever paid for a Warhol painting, behind the $71.7 Million paid in 2007 for his “1963 Green Car Crash, Green Burning Car I.” In 2009, Andy Warhol’s 1962 silk-screen painting “200 One Dollar Bills” sold for $43.8 Million at Sotheby’s, more than four times its estimated selling price. Unfortunately, Warhol wasn’t around to enjoy the fabulous joke of his pictures of money grabbing so much money. The seven-and-a-half-foot-wide canvas, one of Warhol’s first silk-screen paintings, looks like just what you’d think: 200 one-dollar bills. Yes, if you just take a wide look at today’s contemporary art world, that confection of bucks, puff and street smarts, you realize anew that Andy Warhol was the big daddy of it all!!

Warhol’s Iconic Liz Taylor Portrait Could Draw $30M at May Auction

The iconic 1963 Andy Warhol silkscreen portrait of legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor will be auctioned on May 12, 2011, and is expected to sell for $20 Million to $30 Million. “Liz #5” was created at the height of the Taylor’s fame, which also coincided with the most significant and creative period of Warhol’s career. The glamorous portrait embodies the most important themes of Warhol’s body of work, which include celebrity, wealth, scandal, sex, death and Hollywood.

Elizabeth Taylor, the queen of American motion picture stardom, who enthralled generations of moviegoers with her stunning beauty and whose name was synonymous with Hollywood glamour, died on Wednesday in Los Angeles at the age of 79.

During a theatrical career that spanned six decades and more than 50 films, the legendary beauty won two Academy Awards as best actress, for her performances as a call girl in “BUtterfield 8” (1960) and as the acid-tongued Martha in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (1966). Long after she faded from the motion picture screen, Taylor remained a mesmerizing figure. She was a child star who bloomed gracefully into an ingenue; a femme fatale both on the screen and in real life; a shrewd entrepreneur of high-priced perfume; and a pioneering activist in the fight against AIDS.

Taylor had many gay friends and, as the AIDS epidemic mushroomed, some of them were dying. In 1985, she became the most prominent celebrity to back what was then a most unfashionable cause. She agreed to chair the first major AIDS benefit, a fundraising dinner for the nonprofit AIDS Project Los Angeles. Taylor began calling her A-list friends to enlist their support, but many of Hollywood’s biggest stars turned her down. Undaunted, Taylor redoubled her efforts, aided along the way by the stunning announcement that Rock Hudson, the handsome matinee idol and her co-star in “Giant,” had the dreaded disease. She stood by Hudson, just as years later she would stand by pop-idol Michael Jackson during the latter’s struggle to defend himself against child abuse allegations.

Taylor went on to co-found the first national organization devoted to backing AIDS research, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, or AmFAR. In 1991, she formed the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which directly supports AIDS education and patient care. Taylor’s AIDS work brought her the Legion of Honor in 1987, France’s highest civilian award, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ awarded her The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1993. In 2000, Queen Elizabeth made her a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, an honor on the level of knighthood. Through her various efforts she would eventually raise more than $270 Million for AIDS research, prevention and care.
