Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will finally get fired – as the celebrity villain at this year's most controversial bonfire night. It's true that the player has a face only a mother could love so to stay true to his appearance the 49ft (15 meters) statue of Rooney has been given green ogre-style Shrek ears. Dressed in full kit, the giant Rooney clutches a copy of his new five-year contract and a holdall full of cash. The actual effigy has been stuffed with fireworks and will go up in flames on Saturday at Edenbridge Bonfire Society's annual parade in Kent. It’s been an tumultuous year for the star striker and his antics have made him the obvious choice for this year’s bonfire baddie. In September he hit the headlines over allegations that he slept with two prostitutes whilst his wife Colleen was pregnant with their first child. Then his loyalty to his club came into question as he suggested he was going to leave before signing a new lucrative deal with the club - taking home £200,000-a-week, making him Britain's highest paid footballer. Rooney will now join previous baddies Katie Price, Saddam Hussein, Gordon Brown and Tony Blair, in the Edenbridge Bonfire Society’s hall of infamy in Kent.Organiser Charles Laver said: “This year Rooney was the runaway choice.“We did think of him when he was allegedly sleeping with prostitutes but that all died down. Then he stepped up to the mark with all his wage demand shenanigans.”"I hate football myself so I'm quite happy to burn a footballer," he added.Dressed in full kit, the giant Rooney clutches a copy of his new five-year contract and a holdall full of cash. After a week of public falling outs and endless speculation about Wayne Rooney’s future he has finally agreed to sign a five-year contract to stay at Manchester United.
The U-turn comes after a Rooney, his wife Coleen and their young son Kai were faced with a furious mob that has gathered outside their Manchester mansion last night. The mob of 30 men, some wearing balaclavas, were shouting and waving a banner stating: “Join City and die.”
And now it appears the gang have got their wish as Rooney has agreed sign on for United until at least June 2015.
The striker said he knew the fans felt let down but he vowed to win them over on the pitch.
“I’m signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history – which is the reason I joined the Club in the first place,” he said.
“I’m sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they’ve read and seen. But my position was from concern over the future. The fans have been brilliant with me since I arrived and it’s up to me through my performances to win them over again.”
Describing it as "good news", a statement on the club's website said the deal follows "intensive discussions".
Sir Alex Ferguson said: "It's been a difficult week, but the intensity of the coverage is what we expect at Manchester United. I said to the boy that the door is always open and I'm delighted Wayne has agreed to stay.
"Sometimes, when you're in a club, it can be hard to realise just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the last few days to make you understand. I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is.
"I'm pleased he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United's great players. It shows character and belief in what we stand for.
"I'm sure everyone involved with the club will now get behind Wayne and show him the support he needs to produce the performances we know he is capable of."
Rooney said: "I'm delighted to sign another deal at United.
"In the last couple of days, I've talked to the manager and the owners and they’ve convinced me this is where I belong.
"I said on Wednesday the manager's a genius and it's his belief and support that have convinced me to stay.”After a week of public falling outs and endless speculation about Wayne Rooney’s... more

Sir Alex Ferguson has told a press conference of his "terrible disappointment" at the news that Wayne Rooney wants to leave Manchester United when his contract expires.
Ferguson appeared baffled as to why his star striker wants out.
"No-one can deny this club is one of the most successful in British football. We have won 40 main trophies, countless cup finals, a fantastic history, great stadium, great training arrangements. We don't understand it. I can't answer any questions about why he is doing it.
"We can speculate. We can have opinions. It won't matter a dickie-bird, simply because the player is adamant he wants to leave. I can do more than I have said at the moment because we still, to my mind, have the door open."
The Old Trafford boss insisted he hadn't had a falling out with Rooney. Rumours have been rife and Rooney's future at the club has been in doubt over the last few days, following reports that he wasn't prepared to sign a new contract when his current deal finishes at the end of the 2011/12 campaign.
In an interview with Manchester United TV, filmed before the press conference, Ferguson said he was "dumbfounded" when he found out Rooney wouldn't be staying at Man Utd.
"I was in the office on 14 August and David [Rooney's agent] phone me to say he [Rooney] wouldn't be signing a contract.
"I was dumbfounded. Only months before he's been saying he was at the greatest club in the world."
Ferguson then had a meeting with Rooney in which he says he told the sportsman 'respect this club. I don't want any nonsense from you'.
"I don't know if he has done that. I have doubts on that, we are reading all these things about falling out with me and all that nonsense."

Sir Alex Ferguson has placed the media attention on the 24 year old's private life as reason into the bad start in the season for Wayne Rooney. Last season he scored 34 goals for the club, but so far he's only scored one goal from a penalty in his five match appearances.
"It is the first time in Rooney's career that his performances seem to have been adversely affected by some of the headlines he has attracted, and Ferguson painted the picture of a man not enjoying his professional work. "He would like to keep playing with freedom, but the siege of the tabloids can wear out anyone."-Guardian
Though the article notes this isn't first time Ferguson has criticised the press with a cancellation of a weekly press conference this week and his boycott of BBC press since 2004 after a documentary about his son.Sir Alex Ferguson has placed the media attention on the 24 year old's private... more

Coleen Rooney has reportedly patched things up with husband Wayne after rumours of dalliances with prostitutes surfaced two weeks ago.
The Metro says the reconciliation comes after the couple met to discuss their future together:
"The pair reportedly had a second showdown last night where Coleen made it clear that if the England striker plays away one more time, their relationship will be over for good. "
With the couple holding off from releasing an official statement, the tabloids have been forced to go to close friends of the couple to get a sound bite.
In quotes that are in no way made up by any of Britain's leading newspapers, a friend of the couple reportedly told the Daily Mail: ‘Things are looking better and they are talking about a future together.’
While 'a source' apparently told The Sun: "Coleen knows that there will be women all over the country urging her to dump Wayne.
"But she has done a lot of soul-searching and is now feeling stronger and ready to move back in. But she's made it a condition that if there is just one more girl or any more revelations their marriage is finished."

Wayne Rooney has boarded a flight to Switzerland ahead of England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland tomorrow, despite tabloid allegations about his private life appearing in this weekend's papers.
The News Of The World and Sunday Mirror both allege 24-year-old Rooney cheated on his wife Coleen, while she was pregnant, with a £1,200-a-time prostitute.
Although he made the journey, Rooney will still need to prove to Fabio Capello that he's in the right frame of mind to play in tomorrow's match.
His England team-mate James Milner said the 24-year-old Rooney was a top professional who would be concentrating on matters on the pitch.
The Manchester City star stated: "He's a top player, he showed it on Friday and trained fully [on Sunday].
"I'm sure he'll continue to do that. Things are always said in the newspapers. It is part and parcel of football and down to us to make sure the only thing that matters is what happens on the pitch.
"We're here to win a football match and we trained as a squad."

Nobody panic but... Wayne Rooney skipped a training session today, opting instead to spend time in a swimming pool exercising an ankle injury he picked up during England's disappointing 1-1 draw against USA this weekend.
Luckily it's not thought to be too serious and Rooney's expected to start against Algeria on Friday.
Things aren't looking as positive for Ledley King, who obtained a groin injury in the same USA match. The FA will "access his injury on a daily basis" but The Guardian reports that England's medical team are worried that the defender's tournament is over.

In this video, perhaps out of fear of being typecast, James Corden plays the part of an over-confident, overweight loudmouth with blokey appeal.
It's a brave move for the Gavin And Stacey star but I for one think he manages to pull it off. After all, it's not just anyone who can make Wayne Rooney's acting look wooden and soul-sappingly dull.

If you follow football you'll laugh at the opposition teams hilariously bad doodles, and then convince yourselves that you're team players have the best ones. (though you've got to love Cesc's and Robin van Persie's)
The self portraits have been created for a book, which will be sold off for Nordoff Robbins charity in London on Monday. The one pictured is Rooneys.
"The leather-bound book 'The Art of Football' features contributions from stars such as Rio Ferdinand, Didier Drogba, Cesc Fabregas and Steven Gerrard, as well as managers Carlo Ancelotti, Rafael Bentiez and Harry Redknapp."

England fans will be relieved to hear that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed Wayne Rooney's ankle injury, sustained last night during a 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich, as "not terribly serious."
Rooney injured his right ankle during the end of the match and limped off the pitch, supported by a member of Man Utd's support staff. He later left the stadium on crutches.
The 24-year-old (anyone else feel old?) is set for a scan but is in doubt for this weekend's Premier League match against Chelsea.
Edit: there's an excellent write-up about the tabloids' shrieking over-reaction to what's probably going to be a fairly innocuous injury here.England fans will be relieved to hear that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson... more

Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney has been sued £4.3 million, alongside his wife and agent, after a dispute with former representatives.
It is understood that Rooney, 24, still owes Proactive, who he quit in 2008, commission from sponsorship deals with Nike and Coca-Cola. The company is also owed money from Rooneys wife, Coleen, having negotiated her several television and advertising deals.

After a highly controversial week that has rocked the football world, speculation over the next England captain has already begun.
Tabloid papers this week reported that current captain, John Terry, has been playing away from home with the former partner of England team-mate Wayne Bridge, Vanessa Perroncel. And with the World Cup fast approaching this summer, many are doubting that he will be able to command the much needed respect amongst the dressing room.
So who will lead the England team to glory this summer? Reports suggest that Manchester United's Wayne Rooney is the front runner, and with the striker on top form this season, he is also England's most naturally gifted player. Other candidates for the role include Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard, whilst some have called for David Beckham to make a return to his former post. What do you think?

A first half goal from Peter Crouch and an 85th-minute winner from John Terry against Ukraine last night gave England their fifth consecutive win and left them on top of Group Six in the World Cup qualifiers.
It was the two players' goal celebrations that superseded any display of football skills, however. Inspired by a recent Comic Relief sketch in which Gavin And Stacey actor James Corden advises Peter Crouch to abandon the robot move and instead do a "pull-the-rope" mime dance, the number 9 duly obliged.
For his celebration, John Terry teamed up with Wayne Rooney to recreate the captain's last haircut.
"I needed a haircut, but we weren't allowed to leave the hotel," Terry told reporters.
"I asked Wazza and he obliged by giving me a little trim. I'm pleased with it and I might go back next time. He was asking for a tenner for it, but I still owe him."A first half goal from Peter Crouch and an 85th-minute winner from John Terry against... more
