As a young man I sowed my wild oats though they weren’t quite as wild as most. They were more of a genetically modified strain selected for moderation. Of course, I occasionally drank my share and have a small scar on my foot I got at a party in Germany. A drunken lunkhead threw a very sharp penknife at a nearby door and it bounced into my foot, nicking a vein. The cut was promptly and painfully sterilized with vodka and wrapped in gauze and duck tape. I lived to tell the tale, my foot continued to bleed off and on for days.As a young man I sowed my wild oats though they weren’t quite as wild as most.... more

He's got the home-state credibility and a history of political engagement that rival any of the Democratic contenders for the spot.
For the past quarter century, he has been penning and performing smart, often very political songs -- focusing on the farm crisis, economic hard times and race relations. He's been a key organizer of Farm Aid and other fund-raising events for good causes, and he's been a steady presence on the campaign trail in recent years, appearing at the side of numerous Democratic presidential candidates, including Barack Obama.
So, could Mellencamp perform in the U.S. Senate?
Could he be the right replacement for retiring Senator Evan Bayh, D-Indiana?

John Mellencamp’s son Speck has created a facebook page urging his father to quit smoking.
Speck created the facebook group because he “made a deal” with his dad that he’d think about quitting smoking if Speck could get 1,000,000 other people to care enough to join.
What’s weird to me is why John wouldn’t do it first for himself and maybe even second for his own son rather than waiting around for a million other people to care.John Mellencamp’s son Speck has created a facebook page urging his father to... more

Seeger has stood up for almost every meaningful cause: labor unions in the 1940s, civil rights in the ‘50s, the anti-war movement in the ’60s and more recently against the American invasion of Iraq.
Whether you agree with his stances or not, you have to admire his guts. The Pete Seeger quote I most admire came after he testified before the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). He was indicted on ten counts of contempt of Congress. He expected to go to jail. But his response:
“I still feel I committed no wrong, and that my children will not feel ashamed of me in future years.”
Politics aside, this is still the musical event of the year.Seeger has stood up for almost every meaningful cause: labor unions in the 1940s,... more
