“Asparagus” is a stunning animated short film created by Suzan Pitt, a matted-cel work that film critics have hailed as a visionary masterpiece and one of the most lavish and wondrous animated short films ever made. “Asparagus” is the now classic film that assured Pitt’s reputation as a major American animator. After taking four years to make, “Asparagus”, completed in 1979, won awards around the world, including First Prize at the Oberhausen Film Festival in Germany and awards at Ann Arbor, Baltimore and Atlanta Film Festivals in the United States.
Pitt went on to produce a number of other notable animation projects, as well as to design the first two operas to include animated images for the stage (“Damnation of Faust” and “The Magic Flute”) in Germany. In addition, she created large multimedia shows at the Venice Biennale and at Harvard University. A former Associate Professor at Harvard University, Pitt has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Rockefeller Fellowship and three production grants from the National Endowment of the Arts. She presently teaches in the Experimental Animation Program at the California Institute of the Arts.
“Asparagus” is designed like a Pandora’s box, opening up visions into the depths of a woman’s inner world, merging sensual and surrealistic imagery conceived in the form of a Freudian dream. Its mythical visual narrative and dreamscape focuses on erotic metaphors and intellectual references that reflect a thoughtful manner of artistic creativity deeply imbued with the vital nexus between formal experimentation and the exploration of the obscure, dark forces that lurk behind human psyche and praxis.
Defying analytic efforts since the 1980s, “Asparagus”, arguably Pitt’s finest work, is a deeply symbolic reflection on issues of female sexuality, art and identity, and that’s probably as far as one can go. The visual narrative is as lavish and vibrant as it is elusive and hermetic, and Pitt’s claim that “Asparagus” was not designed with an intention to be reflected upon but rather to be emotionally experienced seems reasonable in the face of immense interpretive difficulties raised by the struggle between its unstoppable flow of onirical but culturally familiar imagery, as well as our equally untamed desire for exegetical decomposition.

A magic circle senior lawyer, Deidre Clark, sacked from a leading city firm after she wrote a sexually explicit online novel is suing her former employers for £3.5 million.
She posted erotic fiction online under the pseudonym 'Deirdre Dare', which also featured risque photos of herself in see-through underwear.
She was sacked from her £126,000 a year post in their Moscow offices after being said to have brought the firm into disrepute.
The 44 year old who has since become a “sexpat” columnist for the English-language Moscow News newspaper, is suing the firm for £3.49 million in damages claiming sexual discrimination and unfair dismissal.

Campaigns to save the job of an Australian banker caught viewing erotic images in the background of a live TV interview are growing on the internet.
Business website Here Is The City News has launched a Save Dave section, in support of Macquarie banker David Kiely, who reportedly could be fired.
More than a dozen groups sympathetic to Mr Kiely have been set up on Facebook.
Mr Kiely became an internet sensation after video of him viewing images of model Miranda Kerr appeared on YouTube.
He is due to meet bank chiefs this week, when his future will be decided, media reports say.

“Aurore” is a hauntingly beautiful, surreal 1-1/2 minute black&white short film by the French filmmaker Jean-Julien Pous, which is part of Louis Vuitton’s Journeys Awards. The films in Louis Vuitton’s series are based upon the theme “What does a journey mean to you?” “Aurore” tells the story of a man who travels through his senses, and through the other’s body, in a process of self-discovery becomes aware of his own.

“Fruitless Efforts: Fruit of the Womb” is a humorously deranged 4-min. animated short film directed by Andrew Chesworth and Aaron Quist, who playfully describe the film as, “merely a modest window into humanity’s evolving understanding of the meaning of life.” The cartoon follows a day in the life of Mr. Apple, an average fruity little guy trying to hold down a job, have some friends and just live his life in peace like normal apple-peoples supposedly do. But Apple’s surrounded by a small group of demented fruits, all living on the same creepy, predator-like tree.
Apple’s efforts to make it to work on time evolve into some demential adventures in this animated short's fast and wonderfully funny perverse romp! The fast-paced phallocentric outbursts along the way make one wonder about the presence of some kind of weird underlying deeper meanings like, “Don’t waste sperm, sex is only for procreation.” This loony little film definitely does carry a number of erotic/sexual undertones, but I’ve already spent far too much time thinking about that kind of stuff. So, as they say at the end of the show, “That’s All Folks!”
