(CNN) -- Gil Scott-Heron, dubbed the "godfather of rap" for his mix of poetry and music, died Friday in New York, his publicist at XL Recordings said. He was 62.
It was not immediately known what killed Scott-Heron, who was best known for the 1970 song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," a politically and socially charged song that examined the African American condition in America at the time. The song was banned by some radio stations.
Scott-Heron died at 4 p.m. at a New York hospital, said Lisa Gottheil, his publicist at XL Recordings.
Scott-Heron defined the genre, long-time friend and former bandmate Charlie Saunders told CNN. Saunders worked on Scott-Heron's 1970 debut album "Small Talk At 125th & Lenox."
Saunders, a percussionist, said the last time he saw Scott-Heron was about two years ago when he needed a place to stay.
"He came by our house to get himself together. He spent 4 to 5 days and then moved on," Saunders said.
Much of Scott-Heron's poetry and music reflected his struggles with drugs and alcohol.
Born in 1949, Scott-Heron first gained fame for his poetry and spoken word performances in the late 1960s. By the mid-1970s, he had published two books of poetry and recorded four albums, including "Small Talk At 125th & Lenox."
His early albums, "Pieces of a Man" and "Winter in America," have been credited with influencing other musical genres, such as hip hop. But it was the song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" that put Scott-Heron on the musical map.
His music has been sampled by everyone from Kanye West, who sampled "Comment #1" for his 2010 song "Who Will Save America," to Common's sample of "No Knock" on his 2008 hit "Universal Mind Control."
After a 13-year hiatus from making music, Scott-Heron put out a new album last year called "I'm New Here."
In a 2008 interview with New York magazine, Scott-Heron revealed he had contracted HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, after years of batting drug and alcohol addictions. In 2001 and 2007, he was jailed on drug charges.

"During his annual budget address today, Mayor Michael Bloomberg will announce that he is sticking with a plan to lay off thousands of city teachers.
Sources say Bloomberg plans to announce that 4,666 teachers will be laid off, with an additional 1,500 positions cut through attrition. "
Here we go again. Education sure gets hit hard when there's a budget gap to close. I'm pretty sure there will be some far reaching consequences attached to such an action.
What do you guys make of this? What will happen when that many teachers get the axe? What should be cut instead of teachers jobs?
There's a short video after the jump."During his annual budget address today, Mayor Michael Bloomberg will announce... more

A woman kidnapped as a baby from Harlem Hospital in 1987 -- abducted at 19 days old by a woman who had been lurking around the hospital for weeks wearing a nurse's uniform -- has been found alive and well.
Some 23 years ago, Carlina White was rushed to the emergency room by her parents, who handed her to the woman they thought was a nurse, only to return later and be told that their daughter had vanished.
Carlina exclusively shared with The Post her emotional roller-coaster ride as Nejdra Nance living in Bridgeport, Conn. -- just 45 miles from her birth parents Joy White and Carl Tyson in The Bronx -- to their long-delayed reunion.
She long harbored doubts about the woman she called mom.
The drug-abusing Agnotta Pettway -- who has several aliases, according to Carlina -- often abused her, once pummeling her with a shoe so hard that it left an imprint on her face.
At 16, Carlina got pregnant and asked her "mother" for a birth certificate so she could get prenatal care. Her mother could not provide one.
When she wanted to get a job and a driver's license, her mother could provide no documentation. She also began noticing more and more that she didn't look like her mother.

“The Harlem Album: A Century in Images” is a remarkable collection of photographs curated by Thelma Golden at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Home to writers and revolutionaries, artists and musicians, Harlem has also long been a source of inspiration for countless photographers. The selection of images provided here includes photography by James Van Der Zee, Gordon Parks, Dawoud Bey and Kenneth Nelson, with photographs that reveal a broad and beautiful new visual survey of the neighborhood.
“The choices in this collection were all about offering a wide variety of ways of looking and seeing and thinking,” says Studio Museum Curator Golden. Even when it comes to some of Harlem’s legendary icons, the variety of photographs is telling. There are the pictures of Malcolm X addressing a crowd, but also intimate scenes in which Diana Ross and James Brown shed their public masks. Joe Louis, surrounded by cheering locals, peers coolly at the camera. And Langston Hughes stands, appropriately, on his own stoop, an architectural feature that serves as a “site of memory” in many Harlem photographs. In a neighborhood that has symbolized so much, to people all around the world, the stoop was also a kind of threshold: between home and the larger world.
This piece includes a number of high-resolution vintage photographs, a memorable slide show and three documentary short films.

Joseph "Jazz" Hayden Founder of Still Here Harlem Productions filmed these 3 undercover NYPD police officers search, frisk and arrest a Harlem citizen after finding a joint of marijuana. Jazz, vocally questioned the officers conduct and procedures, considering that a small amount of marijuana is considered a violation in New York State. This incident took place two days after a very violent shooting incident in Harlem involving police http://bit.ly/cy4t5X and community members .
Marijuana possession is legally decriminalized in New York State, yet New York City makes more pot arrests than any other city in the world. Since 1993 NYPD has arrested close to a half million people for possessing small amounts of marijuana. In 2008 alone nearly 90 percent of these arrests were made on black and latino New Yorkers. Bright Stephen Burrows and warm woolen mittens…
Though white paper packages tied up with strings are not on my list, these are a few of my favorite people. Unless you are dead, you know that Target is opening its first store in New York City…East Harlem to be exact. Although it is still a bit of a schlepp for me, seeing that I am a devout downtown-ite, the great news is that the Target folks had the where-with-all to engage designers that would resonate in their new neighborhood. Most notably, Stephen Burrows and the illustrious Isabel and Ruben Toledo. When Target launches those limited edition designer bits with the likes of Zac Posen or Alexander McQueen, that stuff doesn’t really float my boat. At least now, I get to crow about Ruben and Isabel Toledo’s swimwear collection and Stephen Burrows’ signature hand print T-shirts. Why? Because I lerve them. I have known Stephen since the early days of Studio 54…I was a Burrow-ette. And as for the Toledos, well, name me one other couple in the fashion industry that is as admired, respected and talented as those two, besides maybe Inez van Lamsveerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Go ahead….name another couple on that level…you see…ungats? Sorry, but Katy Perry and Russell Brand do not cut it.

Storage was exhibited at Harlem Studio Fellowship by Montrasioarte (HSF) in New York from November 2 – 30, 2009.
The installation is composed of 200 hand-made bricks, shaped, painted, and cooked by Valerio Ricci during his three-month stay at HSF. They covered most of the floor’s surface in a room, leaving only a perimetric passageway free. Ordered in an extensive grid, their yellow-glazed ceramic shined as a carpet of gold bullions. Throughout the show, HSF visitors were invited to take home the bricks. Each brick is initialed, dated and numbered on the bottom; each guest could have a brick by filling out a form with his/her contacts and the number of the brick.Storage was exhibited at Harlem Studio Fellowship by Montrasioarte (HSF) in New York... more
