I would like to warn viewers that this pod contains disturbing images
Before jumping and condeming what is obviously a passion to many people around the world i felt the need to experience it first hand before forming an opinion. Hence I have come to the conclusion that although the intention is genuinely not for the chicken die and the owners do actually have some affection for their prize-fighters (e.g. When one man was giving his chicken CPR), it was still too much for me to handle.Having been to a Bullfight and admired not the killing but the matadors bravery and enjoyed the experience I found myself unable to enjoy the spectacle since the chickens are forced to fight with no alternative and the result is always a frightened animal in danger, as opposed to a Bullfight where there is the prospect of human risk.

Nicaragua's decision to ban all types of abortion including those medically necessary to save a woman's life, has had deep ramifications according to human rights groups in the second poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Since the ban was implemented in 2006, 82 women have died because they did not receive a life saving abortion. Some doctors have even denied medical services to pregnant women for fear that the possibility of an aborted pregnancy could lead to their incarceration. The aftermath of Nicaragua's decision to outlaw abortion has shaken this tiny Central American society to the core. Last year Nicaragua, a poor country mired in civil war for much of the 1980´s outlawed all forms of abortion, including operations to save a pregnant woman's life, after a campaign by the Catholic church. The law also established jail sentences of six to thirty years for women who terminate their pregnancies and doctors who perform the procedure. As a result the deaths of women who have undergone "back alley abortions" have skyrocketed infuriating human and women's rights groups all over the world. It is somewhat ironic that the Nicaragua´s newly elected leftist government approved the law. However this was largely due to their attempts to appease the powerful Catholic church in exchange for the church´s support for their anti-poverty measures. The Underground intends to film in the barrios of Managua and record interviews with the families of victims as well as mothers-to-be who are too poor to afford a newborn, human rights groups, representatives of the Catholic Church, and government officials.
The Underground is currently in pre-production to go to Nicaragua April 6th and begin this documentary pod with the help of Human Rights Watch, an independent, nongovernmental organization, supported by contributions from private individuals and foundations worldwide. We ask that current, EMI and Saul Williams consider scoring this pod in conjunction with Theme 2: Mother Hood: The Urban Family.

Mariana van Zeller and I were on the Miskito Coast back in March shooting Diving Too Deep and Fishing for Blow. I can only imagine what a Hurricane of this magnitude would do to the region. According to the AP report, residents say that the Nicaraguan authorities only sent out evacuation warnings after many lobster divers were already out to sea and others were trapped out on cayes, like the one featured in Diving Too Deep. Felix also destroyed crops, boats and drinking water that many of these isolated depend on for survival.
