PM approves measures to crack down on violent ultra-nationalist settlers after mosque vandalism and attack on soldiers.
Human rights groups accuse Israel of failing to arrest most settlers involved in violence against Palestinians [Reuters]
Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, has approved measures to crack down on violent ultra-nationalist Jewish settlers after a rampage at an occupied West Bank military base and torching of a mosque's facade stirred public outrage.
Among the measures approved by Netanyahu on Wednesday were administrative detention of suspects, trials of some suspects in military rather than civil courts, and ejection from the West Bank of settlers suspected of inciting violence.
Israeli soldiers will also be empowered to carry out arrests, a statement from Netanyahu's office said. Until now Israeli police have had to be called to a crime scene to conduct arrests, giving perpetrators time to flee.
But the prime minister rejected calls from the justice and internal security ministers to classify violent right-wing groups as "terrorists".
"Anyone who raises a hand against Israeli soldiers or police will be severely punished," Netanyahu said.
He said such suspects would be dealt with in the same way as protesters in Bilin, a Palestinian village where clashes, sometimes deadly, over the Israeli separation barrier built across occupied land occur regularly.
Attacks by violent Jewish groups have in the past generally targeted Palestinians and Arabs, but in recent months they have been increasingly directed at the army and left-wing Israelis..... more

Park 51 as it stands today
Almost a year ago I spent several hours protesting the bigotry, willful misinformation started by hate group, supported by the Tea Party and the Republicans against the construction of a muslim ( Multicultural, Interfaith http://park51.org ) cultural center several blocks away from what is now called Ground zero.
As you all know this simple edifice, not much different from another in the city, became a wedge used by all mentioned above to spread hate, suspicion, intolerance. Their main goal was not to show Respect ( Muslims also died when the towers came down) to the fallen, it wasn't to prevent hate or future clashes at the site. It was to discredit the President and cause as much damage as possible to the Democrats during the mid-term elections.
They succeeded and power shifted in the House. We allowed a small faction to put some candidates in office, the very same, who continuously obstruct every small measure President Barack Obama attempts to relieve unemployment, save Social Security or give American a decent medical insurance program.
This was not about preventing the cultural center from being constructed, I have returned almost a year to the day, there were no outraged Tea Party members, no Republicans, no opposing 9-11 family members, no abusive freedom tower construction workers not even a lone bigot. WHY?
If this was such an important issue they would still be there protesting against Muslim evil. It appears the circus just moved somewhere else, so much for sticking to their guns.
It's simple the cameras are gone and what they wanted to accomplish during mid-term elections worked-0ut beautifully---You see folks they won. I blame Republicans, The Tea Party, Conservatives, The media, Independents but above all DEMOCRATS, the ones who couldn't be bothered to vote on something so seemingly insignificant as mid-term elections. Let me ask you if you were of that mindset now as you desperately shout "Mr.President we need jobs" do you still think voting on mid-term elections trivial?

California wingnut arrested outside Michigan mosque with explosives: Just another 'isolated incident'Now, I don't know about you, but when an agitated man drives all the way from California to Dearborn, Michigan, with a trunk full of Class C explosives (high-end fireworks, mostly) and is arrested outside an Islamic center for making terrorist threats -- well hey, I just naturally assume that this has nothing, nothing whatsoever to do with the right-wing Islamophobic hatred that's regularly ginned up by radio and TV talkers.
From the Detroit Free Press:
About 700 people were attending a funeral inside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, the largest mosque in metro Detroit, when Dearborn police arrived to arrest a man in a car in the parking lot.
He had driven to Michigan from California and reportedly was overheard in a bar making threatening comments about Muslims or Arabs. His car was loaded with large, illegal fireworks, police said. Now, Roger Stockham, 63, is jailed on charges that include making a false report or threat of terrorism.
"He's very dangerous," said Dearborn Police Chief Ron Haddad.
Now, how do we know that this couldn't possibly have been a right-wing ideologue? Why, because he had been arrested back in 2002 for threatening President Bush -- which is always a certain sign of left-wing politics, according to every right-wing talker on the planet. From the Detroit News:
A decorated Army veteran accused of plotting to blow up a Metro Detroit mosque served time in federal prison for threatening to kill President George W. Bush and bomb a Vermont veterans' clinic in 2002.
Ah, but then we read the details of that particular arrest:
In the Vermont incident, he told authorities at the time of his arrest at a Veterans Affairs Department complex in Colchester that his minivan was full of explosives. A search found no explosives.
Before the arrest, Stockham called a local paper twice to say he was going to explode bombs in the neighborhood. In one call, he identified himself as "Hem Ahadin," saying he was "a local Muslim terrorist on a roll."
He ranted against the VA, the FBI and Bush, largely because of the things the president had said about Iraq in a speech earlier in the week.
According to affidavit filed in U.S. District Court, Stockham threatened to carry out "jihad," or holy war, against the VA office in White River, Vt.
In other words, the threat against Bush was made in the context of Stockham pretending to be an Islamic terrorist -- that is, he threatened Bush because he wanted his listeners to believe he was a Muslim, since he wanted authorities to assume whatever act he committed was an act of Islamist terrorism.
Most of all, the man had been diagnosed with (and treated for) mental illness on several occasions, which we all know means you can't possibly blame right-wing rhetoric for having helped inspire the act, right?
Yep, just another isolated incident.. We're up to 21 and counting, by the way.

At least 45 people have been killed and nearly 100 injured in a suicide bomb attack on a mosque in north-west Pakistan, local officials say.
The attack took place during Friday prayers in the Darra Adam Khel area, near Pakistan's tribal regions.
The roof of the mosque had caved in and the death toll was likely to rise, officials say.
It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack, the latest in a series of mosque and shrine bombings.
The Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for such attacks in the past and have been active in the Darra area.
The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says the latest bombing may have been a response from pro-Taliban militants to recent military offensives in the Darra area.
The mosque that was attacked was in the village of Akhurwal, about 45km (30 miles) south of Peshawar.
All that was left standing was one wall, according to the AFP news agency.
Witnesses contacted by the BBC said the bomber was on foot. He blew himself up at the main gate of the mosque after Friday prayers had ended and worshippers were coming out of the mosque.
"We fear there might be more casualties in the debris," one official said shortly after the blast. Some of the injured are in a critical condition
Ambulances and volunteers ferried the survivors to nearby hospitals. Rescuers said some victims of the blast had been trapped by debris.
"The blast tossed me up. I fell down," one man told the Associated Press from his hospital bed in Peshawar. "Later, it was just like a graveyard."
A number of children were among the dead and wounded, medics at Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital said.
"I had just finished the prayers when there was a big explosion. It was very terrifying. I don't know what happened later. I just fell down," 15-year-old Mohib Ullah told Reuters news agency.
Some reports say the target could have been a local tribal elder, whose house near the mosque was among those damaged. The elder is reported to have encouraged people to take a stand against the Taliban.
It is not clear if he was among the victims. One report said he now lived in Lahore.
The Darra region links up with Orakzai and Khyber tribal regions in the west and has served as a convenient base for militants attacking Nato supply convoys as well as Shia commuters from Kurram.
Friday's bombing is the deadliest in Pakistan since an attack on a Shia Muslim rally in Quetta killed at least 50 people on 3 September.
Last month 25 people were killed in a blast at a shrine in Punjab province. Another attack at a Karachi shrine two weeks earlier killed nine and was claimed by the Taliban.

Israel is worried that Jewish militants torched a West Bank mosque overnight Monday in a bid to undermine peace negotiations with the Palestinians.
A mosque in the Palestinian village of Beit Fajar, just south of Bethlehem, became the fourth in the last two years to be the target of an arson attempt, according to human rights workers. The attack is believed to be part of a campaign by vigilante settlers to ignite violence by attacking Muslim holy sites.
"Whoever did this is a terrorist in every sense of the word, and intended to hurt the chances for peace and dialogue with the Palestinians,'' said Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak in a statement. "This was a shameful act that besmirched the State of Israel and its value."

Bill O’Reilly is at it again. Remember when he called for squashing the First Amendment of Americans opposed to the illegal invasion of Iraq? “And it is our duty as loyal Americans to shut up once the fighting begins, unless — unless facts prove the operation wrong, as was the case in Vietnam,” said Bill on March 3, 2003.
Facts soon revealed that the neocons had bamboozled the nation into invading Iraq under false pretense, but we didn’t get a retraction from Bill. Now O’Reilly is characterizing 9/11 Truth activists as dangerous radicals.
Earlier this week, O’Reilly linked the Ground Zero imam Feisal Abdul Rauf — who worked with the FBI on its “counterterrorism” effort in March of 2003 and engages in conversations with the Council On Foreign Relations — to the “truther” Faiz Khan, a Muslim scholar and educator who was a first responder on September 11, 2001. Khan participated in two memorial services for the victims of 9/11 and is involved with the New York group Muslims Against Terrorism.
Bill O’Reilly would restrict Khan’s freedom of movement for his assertion that 9/11 was an inside job. Khan should not be “allowed within ten miles of Ground Zero,” said the Fox News teleprompter reader.
We can only assume that O’Reilly would extend this ban to all people who believe 9/11 was an inside job and possibly those who have reservations about the official fairy tale that pins the blame on Muslim cave-dwellers half way around the world.

Do you think that if the general public knew the official story of 9/11 was a fairy tale, would they support these illegal, unconstitutional wars? Last night on "The Report," Stephen Colbert focused his "The Word" segment on Terry Jones's attempted Quran burning and the planned Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero. Colbert feels that whether we burn the Quran or build a mosque, the only thing that will stop terrorists from attacking us is a plan straight out of the script of "Dr. Strangelove."
First, Colbert showed his resentment for people like Sarah Palin speaking out against the burning of the Quran by likening it to the planned park51 Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero. "Destroying a religious symbol and building a religious center are really the same thing if you don't think about it," Colbert said. "Ground Zero is a sacred site. How DARE they build a house of worship there?"
While Jones claimed to call off the Quran burning because Imam Rauf said he wouldn't build the Islamic center, Rauf said that NOT building it will send a message to Muslim nations that Islam is under attack in America. On the other hand, Sean Hannity said building it will send the message that Americans are submitting to foreign pressures. So what's the right thing to do?
Doing his best Peter Sellers impression, Colbert provided a solution from the cold war era film "Dr. Strangelove," involving a doomsday machine covered with a certain holy book, that will only be detonated if a certain cultural center is built. The solution, and the impression, were really quite brilliant.

Sometime in 1999, a construction electrician received a new work assignment from his union. The man, Sinclair Hejazi Abdus-Salaam, was told to report to 2 World Trade Center, the southern of the twin towers.
In the union locker room on the 51st floor, Mr. Abdus-Salaam went through a construction worker’s version of due diligence. In the case of an emergency in the building, he asked his foreman and crew, where was he supposed to reassemble? The answer was the corner of Broadway and Vesey.
Over the next few days, noticing some fellow Muslims on the job, Mr. Abdus-Salaam voiced an equally essential question: “So where do you pray at?” And so he learned about the Muslim prayer room on the 17th floor of the south tower.
He went there regularly in the months to come, first doing the ablution known as wudu in a washroom fitted for cleansing hands, face and feet, and then facing toward Mecca to intone the salat prayer.
On any given day, Mr. Abdus-Salaam’s companions in the prayer room might include financial analysts, carpenters, receptionists, secretaries and ironworkers. There were American natives, immigrants who had earned citizenship, visitors conducting international business — the whole Muslim spectrum of nationality and race.
Leaping down the stairs on Sept. 11, 2001, when he had been installing ceiling speakers for a reinsurance company on the 49th floor, Mr. Abdus-Salaam had a brief, panicked thought. He didn’t see any of the Muslims he recognized from the prayer room. Where were they? Had they managed to evacuate?
He staggered out to the gathering place at Broadway and Vesey. From that corner, he watched the south tower collapse, to be followed soon by the north one. Somewhere in the smoking, burning mountain of rubble lay whatever remained of the prayer room, and also of some of the Muslims who had used it.Sometime in 1999, a construction electrician received a new work assignment from his... more
