‘Time cloak’ hid event in experiment, physicists say
By David Brown, Published: January 4
A team of physicists at Cornell University has created a wrinkle in time. Actually, it’s more like a teeny tiny moth hole in time. Inside it things can occur that are entirely undetectable, at least to ordinary observers. It’s as if they never happened.
This phenomenon, known as “temporal cloaking,” is the latest addition to a world that once existed only in children’s literature and science fiction — a place where objects are invisible and events are unrecorded.
Top physics stories of 2011: These events and discoveries make up the key stories in the field of physics this year.
Some of the world’s greatest inventions have science fiction to thank for their easy-adoption and popularity among consumers.
The physics community let out a small gasp six years ago when researchers reported the first successful “spatial cloaking,” in which light is bent around an object in a way that makes it disappear from view. The new report in the journal Nature shows how they can play with something that would seem to be even harder to manipulate: the perception of time.
“We think of time in the way that other people think of space. What other people are doing in space, we can do it in time,” said Moti Fridman, a researcher at the School of Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University .
“I think it’s a big step forward,” said Vladimir M. Shalaev, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University, who has worked on spatial cloaking. “It’s another example of the beauty of ‘transformational optics,’ which is behind all these ideas.”
Temporal cloaking, like spatial cloaking, is not magic. It follows all the ironclad laws of physics and is to some extent a parlor trick, albeit performed in a highly unusual parlor. Whether it will have a use isn’t known, as the hole in time created by the Cornell team lasts only 50 trillionths of a second.
“It is not enough time to steal a painting from a museum,” Fridman said, joking. He added that there might nevertheless be practical uses of the technology.
Cloaking things, either in space or in time, requires the manipulation of light. Light carries information; it bounces off objects, defining their shape and sending those details to detectors such as our eyes. If an object can prevent light from doing that, it will become invisible.
But because light travels and has speed, it also defines when something happens. The lightening and darkening that occurs when a beam of light illuminates an event marks the event in time. If something can happen and yet leave the light unperturbed, which is the essence of temporal cloaking, then the event can become as invisible as a cloaked object.
Those manipulations are possible because of man-made substances that behave in ways that natural substances don’t. The extreme bending of light that makes spatial cloaking possible requires so-called optical metamaterials made through nanotechnology. Temporal cloaking depends on special lasers and optical fibers that disperse or undisperse light in predictable ways.
In their experiment, previewed this summer in an online archive and reported in detail in Nature on Tuesday, Fridman and his collaborators sent a laser beam of light down a fiber-optic cable. At the starting end of the cable, they pulsed the beam with a second laser that changed the light from a single wavelength to a range of wavelengths, essentially different colors.‘Time cloak’ hid event in experiment, physicists say

“Light” is a mesmerizing two-minute short film directed by David Parker for Sunday Paper. The film was shot over a couple nights in Los Angeles as two friends drove around with a camera exploring the city’s architecture and abandoned landscapes. Their work evolved into a project intended to bring awareness to energy waste. Bleeding, crying lights metaphorically parallel the ways in which we squander our natural resources without much thought. While the original sentiment remains, the film also grew into a poetic statement about a world run wild and the human tendency to exploit that which we hold dear.
This piece includes a number of color photographs, as well as the wonderful short film.

Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, stretches beyond India, a five-day holiday encompassing multiple stories from around the world, involving Hindus, some Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains. For India, however, where roughly 80 percent of the population practices Hinduism, Diwali 2011 is and will be a massive and deeply Hindu affair, one involving dancing, shows, religious worship and lots of fireworks.
Diwali, or Divali, means "row of lights," and is a celebration of the Hindu New Year according to the lunisolar calendar. Typically, Diwali also falls near the end of harvest season, from mid-October to mid-November, meaning the goddess Lakshmi, who brings wealth and prosperity, is honored by the holiday with candle offerings and bright, festive decorations.
It is also, however, a more general celebration of good over evil, especially that of Rama's victory over the 10-headed demon Ravana in the Hindu epic "The Ramayana." Rama, an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu, returns home during Diwali (Oct. 26, in 2011) after fourteen years of banishment, and Hindus lay out lamps, set off fireworks, and hang paper lanterns to help light his way home.
All these traditions combine to make Diwali a true "festival of lights," from those dedicated to Lakshmi and celebrating Rama to Hindus honoring Ganesh, the God of good beginnings, on this gorgeous holiday. While the story behind Diwali and how people celebrate may vary from region to region, the holiday's essence remains the same: rejoicing at the victory of goodness, light, and atman (the soul) over falseness, darkness, and reality.Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, stretches beyond India, a five-day holiday... more

This film is a short insight in the happenings on 28th December 2010 in Bolton Market, karachi, Pakistan where after an blast during a procession, 100's of shops were burned down by the people for the people in an organized planned manner. Not only our culture and heritage but 1000's of lives went into flames. What we have become is the product of our own doings and this is what this film emphasizes on.

We can all walk the same path Christ did to reach the enlightenment that opens the door to the true meaning of life and our purpose on this Earth. All it takes is a willingness to see inside ourselves and to reflect on the higher spiritual meaning of the life of Christ which reflects the light in our own being.
At this time of year it is the spiritual and moral message of Christ the teacher that I reflect upon. The Gnostic Gospels speak of a Jesus the Church sought to dismiss. Through the discovery of the Gnostic Gospels in Egypt a new perspective on an ancient and mystical message that can lead to great transformation of the spirit has also been uncovered, and it is yours to research.
However you celebrate this message, may the light in the Christ lead you to the discovery of the divine spark in yourself and the shedding of that light upon the world through your own gnosis to preserve it.
Happy holidays. We can all walk the same path Christ did to reach the enlightenment that opens the... more

As the name implies, free space optics uses light to transmit data, much the same way as fiber optics systems but through the air, not over a fiber line. Founded in 1996, SkyFiber is hardly a new company, but for most of its existence it’s been flying under the radar, researching optical technologies and accruing patents. According to CEO David Achim, its success in patenting much of free space optics intellectual property is what forced Terabeam to ultimately get out of the business. Last year, SkyFiber decided that its technology and its market were ready for commercial deployments. It raised $32 million in venture funding and began trialing its equipment with local governments and wireless operators and is now set to start selling its SkyLink product commercially.
“Free space optics was an overhyped, overpromised and under-delivered technology that left a bad taste in people’s mouths’,” Achim said, explaining why the technology fell off the radar after Terabeam’s initial trials. But SkyFiber has managed to optimize the technology to overcome its original shortcomings, which were primarily related to range and weather conditions...

They said the Kinect hack would produce some great interactive art projects and it looks like a great fun one is already into development.
From the video, they used the hack to create a interactive puppet which projects onto your wall. The bird is controlled with elbow, wrist and hand movement and speaks when you open and close your hand.
Neatorama says the idea was built in one day, can't wait for more.
"If you're interested in making projects with the Kinect and openFrameworks check out the addon as it progresses on the OF forums. openframeworks.cc/forum/viewtopic.php?p=24948#p24948
