The wyrm came crawling but Woden took nine glory-twigs and struck the adder so that it flew into nine parts.
Woden learned the secret of the runes after sacrificing himself to himself. The Scandinavian rune alphabet is called the futhark or fuþark, The Anglo-Saxon one is known as the Futhorc or Fuþorc.
This music video shows ancient rune stones from Sweden and Britain. All of them were carved between the 7th and 11th century.

Now when I was growing up I was a public school kid so I didn't understand the concept of pagan babies. I was probably one of the only kids in my school who never had to go to church on Sunday's even so religion was a bit of a foreign concept to me. I understood that there was this God thing that was bigger than us and loved us, but at the same time was smiting us more than giving us candy bars. Now when I was growing up I was a public school kid so I didn't understand the... more

Ex-head of the church of satan, friend of Charles Manson, mentor of Marilyn Manson, descendant of Jesus Christ, social darwinist, neo-pagan, founder of noise core, electronic pioneer and alleged crypto-fascist; Boyd Rice's CV is as impressive as it is controversial.
Since the mid 70's he has produced some of the most challenging and original recorded music in history. The sheer emotion, untamed structure and raw, uncompromising sounds are made all the more intriguing by the accompaniment of fascistic imagery and occultist aesthetics.
NON is perhaps his most famous music project. NON's last record, 'Children of the black sun' was released on Mute records in 2002 and tended toward the dark ambient sound of his other projects. The next record 'Back to mono' is a return to the abrasive noise of his early years and is to be released this Summer. Survive the Jive caught up with Boyd at the recent Short circuit festival in Camden to find out about the new record from NON 'Back to Mono' and Boyd's new book 'Twilight Man'Ex-head of the church of satan, friend of Charles Manson, mentor of Marilyn Manson,... more

Opening in 1896, the Sutro Baths named after former Major Adolph Sutro who financed the build as well as the Cliff House next door created a natatorium similar to the old Roman baths, only well, bigger. We’re San Francisco and we have to one up everyone including the Holy Roman Empire. It was the largest indoor swimming pool establishment in the world at the time with one freshwater pool and six saltwater pools. If you're facing a lengthy prison term and you're a follower of the Pagan or Wicca faiths, there's good news! Well, as good as news can be when you're facing months of playing mummy to the D Wing Posse's daddies...
Pagans and druids will soon be given the same religious rights as Christian and Muslim inmates. They'll be able to choose to take four of the eight Pagan festivals off, meaning they won't have to do any work on days like Hallowe'en and, um, the 'festival of the lactating sheep'. Oh my.
And in a move that sounds ever so slightly risky, Pagan prisoners will also be allowed to keep 'wands' or 'sticks' in their cells.
Steven Gillian, general secretary of The Prison Officers' Association, is not a happy man. He warned that some prisoners would 'simply jump on the bandwagon' to gain extra privileges and added:
"I don't know how this fits in with the 40 hours of work the justice secretary wants prisoners to do."
If you're facing a lengthy prison term and you're a follower of the Pagan... more

A very tangible manifestation of black-winged demon of despair and his influence is described by Edgar Allan Poe in his uncannily beautiful poem, "The Raven." Making masterful use of his gift for consonance and cadence, Poe has, within seventeen stanzas, depicted as powerful a description of a descent into the pit as to be found outside Dante's Inferno. http://www.makeahistory.com/index.php/section-blog/3667-edgar-allen-poeA very tangible manifestation of black-winged demon of despair and his influence is... more

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is to make a keynote address this evening before the Annual Bohemian Club secret gathering – a lifetime achievement for a man who has long been groomed for power by the globalist elite.
Schwarzenegger will speak in front of hundreds of movers and shakers at the 2,700-acre wooded encampment along the Russian River in Monte Rio.
The plutocrats will no doubt be eager to hear from the man that they hand picked to become California Governor in 2003, a fact that was reported in the San Francisco Chronicle at the time.
Schwarzenegger has since been a regular attendee at the Grove, but this will be the first time he has delivered a main event address at the elite hideout.
The news was reported as part of a puff piece on the grove in the Santa Rosa based Newspaper, The Press Democrat.
The article paints the Grove as some kind of fund-raising arts variety festival, when in reality it is the setting for top powerbrokers to knock their heads together on issues directly affecting world events, in between frolicking naked, urinating on giant Redwood trees and engaging in bizarre rituals.
The Manhattan Project was conceived at the Grove in the early 1940s, and Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan met there in 1967 and agreed who would seek the presidency first.
Other members include George W. Bush, George H.W. Bush, Henry Kissinger, Alan Greenspan, David Rockefeller, Colin Powell, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and former secretaries of state George Shultz and James Baker.
In the past former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has attended the gathering, while in 2008 just months before the election, it was rumoured that both Barack Obama and John McCain attended.
In 2000 Alex Jones infiltrated the encampment and caught exclusive video footage of a bizarre mock human sacrifice ritual, known as “the cremation of care”, under a 40 foot stone owl that the members refer to as Molech.
Attendees dress up like Klan members in hooded robes and perform druidic pagan ceremonies to mark the spectacular finale of the event.
Nixon is on record discussing homosexual activity at the Grove, whilst it is also documented that male and female porn stars and prostitutes are shipped in for the annual retreat.
A reader who got a summer job working at the Grove in 2005, Chris Jones, reported that he was regularly propositioned for sex by the old men attending the encampment and asked if he “slept around” and wanted to have some fun.
Jones was later sentenced to three years in jail by California authorities for simply showing a tape of his visit to minors.California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is to make a keynote address this evening... more

Mayday, “somour games,” was a popular holiday in the middle ages, a celebration of “Sumer is i-cumen in.” Young folk and others would venture into the woods before daybreak, or the night before, to gather wild flowers, greenery, and hawthorn boughs. Sometimes the young men would carry back a tree trunk, stripped of its branches, to be redecorated with flowers and long ribbons. Many towns had a year-round Maypole fixed in their village square around which villagers would enjoy dancing, games, contests, choosing a May Queen, and feasting.
Our 14th annual festival of merriment, feasting and the beauty of Spring in the countryside. Medieval clothing is encouraged, but optional. Greens, yellows and a chaplet for your hair are preferred on this occasion.

The article today, “How Can Progressives…” is long and dense, full of all the reasons I don’t watch the news very often and live in the middle of nowhere. The author’s main point, I think, is that it’s easy to get burned out on fear and hysteria, when you don’t have a clear direction in which to actually progress.
So, lest I belabor the point, here is a brief list of what we as individuals, CAN do to save the planet.
We eat, therefore growing food is good.
We invest, therefore investing in progressive businesses and divesting from dinosaurs is good.
We drive, therefore an efficient and/or electric, etc. car is good. Also living close to where we work and shop, and also investing in a bike and hiking boots.
We use electricity and heat, therefore investing in solar, wind, and tide generation is good.
We work, therefore, 8 hours a day we have the opportunity to influence those we work for and with. We can choose a job with a small company. We can start our own business. If necessary, we can subvert the corporations from within.
We dwell, therefore it is good for our dwellings to be upgraded to use the least energy. We must shut things off when not in use, buy efficient appliances, add solar roofs or small wind towers.
We bathe and wash our excessive amounts of clothing. Therefore, appliances that limit water use while getting us clean are good. Buying fewer and better quality clothes is good. Short showers are very good.
We play, therefore finding recreation that doesn’t add to the earth’s troubles is good. Hike, but don’t drive a thousand miles to do it. Go two- or four-footing, instead of four-wheeling, to see the wilderness. Dig a garden instead of mowing the grass. Plant the garden instead of watching TV.
Join a sports team or a book club or a church.
We all live in a locality. Therefore, it is good to think globally, but act locally, to clean up, rethink, reallocate, build community, tend to the neglected and confront the greedy.
We are citizens of the United States of America AND of the world. Therefore, it is good and necessary to act like citizens, not like slaves. Stand Up. Do Right. Speak truth to power. Take your lumps and try again. They made me an Elder of my church yesterday. If an unregenerate pagan and unitarian like me can open my mind to that extent, what might be possible for you?The article today, “How Can Progressives…” is long and dense, full... more

The Air Force Academy has set aside an outdoor worship area for Pagans, Wiccans, Druids and other Earth-centered believers, school officials said Monday.
A double circle of stones atop a hill on the campus near Colorado Springs has been designated for the group, which previously met indoors.
"Being with nature and connecting with it is kind of the whole point," said Tech. Sgt. Brandon Longcrier, who sponsors the group and describes himself as a Pagan. "It will dramatically improve that atmosphere, the mindset and the actual connection."
The stones were moved to the hilltop last year because erosion threatened to make them unstable in their previous location near the visitors center. Crews arranged them in two concentric circles because they thought it would be a pleasant place for cadets to relax, Longcrier said.
When Longcrier and academy chaplains were looking for an outdoor worship space, they discovered one already existed in the form of the circles.
Lt. Col. William Ziegler, one of the academy's chaplains, said designating the space is part of the school's effort to foster religious tolerance and to defend the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom.
"It's about our commitment as airmen to protect freedom and defend freedom. To me this is a freedom thing," he said.
The school also has worship facilities for Protestant and Catholic Christians, Jews, Muslims and Buddhists.
The academy superintendent, Lt. Gen. Michael Gould, has made religious tolerance a priority. It became a concern in 2004 when a survey found many cadets had heard slurs or jokes about other religions and that some felt ostracized because they weren't religious.
Longcrier and Ziegler said they've heard no criticism of the new worship space but both noted its presence was just made public.
"Not to say that it's not coming, but so far we haven't had any real issues," Longcrier said.
He said 15 to 20 cadets have shown an interest in Earth-centered beliefs, and eight to 10 regularly attend Monday night meetings. Of those, six or seven are devout believers and the others are "searchers," Longcrier said.
The academy has about 4,000 cadets. The school is one of five U.S. service academies, including West Point and Annapolis. Cadets graduate as second lieutenants.
"Earth-centered" spirituality encompasses many beliefs, Longcrier said, many that recognize multiple gods and goddesses and observe holidays tied to the seasons. The Air Force Academy has set aside an outdoor worship area for Pagans, Wiccans,... more

The observance of All Hallow’s Eve, which over the years has been contracted into Halloween, has its roots in the end of summer celebrations held by people of pre-Christian Europe, especially the Celts of the British Isles.
Because the Celts believed that the world of the living and that of the dead were so close during this festival, allowing spirits of the dead to more easily return to the land of the living, people set out food and drink for family members who had died the previous year. Of course, if friendly ghosts could return under this night’s cover of darkness, so could evil spirits. To keep these malevolent ghosts at bay, skeletons, presumably of dead animals, were placed at the entrance of each house and in many cases turnips were hollowed out, faces carved into the shells to represent skulls and small pieces of wood wrapped in oil soaked cloths were placed inside each one and set alight. In some places, people dressed in animal skins or wore grotesque masks to frighten away unwelcome spirits.
In Scotland, the young men disguised themselves as spirits by dressing in white and blackening their faces, or wearing masks or veils to confuse and ward off these unwanted visitors. This costume and carved turnip practice lasted well into mediaeval times, when Christianity had long replaced the Celtic religion.
With the arrival of the Romans in Britain, a new element was added to the end of the summer events, when the festival honouring Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and orchards, took place around the same time. Apples played an important role in this celebration.
Another ancient British festival with an apple theme, now known as Snap Apple Night, was celebrated with bonfires, feasting, dancing and itinerant entertainers at this time of year. One of its popular games was to try and bite an apple suspended on a string without using hands. It seems then, that apples and turnips at Halloween time predate pumpkins by many hundreds of years.
With the arrival of Christianity, early church leaders, realizing they couldn’t simply ban these old customs, wisely chose to give them a Christian interpretation and the day remembering Christian saints was moved from May 13 to the end of October and All Hallow's Eve came into being, with the day following called All Saints’ Day (“hallow” is an old English word for holy one or saint).
In parts of 9th century continental Europe, people went from door to door early in November “souling,” because it was believed departed souls needed help on their journey to Heaven. The “soulers” begged specially made little “soul cakes” from each family visited and in return would promise to pray for family members that had recently died. Eventually the day following All Saints’ became All Souls’ Day.
While the Christian aspect of this holy day (holiday) remained strong in the old world, the other old traditions began to fade after 1500, but not before British settlers arrived in Canada and the U.S.A., bringing the old ideas with them. Where now the Christian aspect has become muted, the earlier pre-Christian customs remain strong.

A Roman mosaic floor filled with scenes depicting pagan rites and oriental gods has emerged from the ground of a Catholic church in Italy, archaeologists announced.
The mosaic pavement, which measures 140 square feet and dates to the fourth century A.D., was unearthed at a depth of about 13 feet below the the ground's surface during archaeological investigations in the crypt of the Cathedral of Reggio Emilia, in central-northern Italy.
"The size and design of the mosaic pavement suggest that it formed the floor of a huge room. We believe this was the residence of a wealthy Roman," Renata Curina, the archaeologist in charge of the dig, told Discovery News.
The fact that depictions of pagan gods had lain for hundreds of years just a few meters under the cathedral doesn't come too much as a surprise, according to the archaeologist.
"The church was built on top of preexisting building structures. This is rather normal in Reggio Emilia. We can see that little care was taken of the mosaic floor, since pillars are built on top of it," Curina said.
Made up of small tesserae — tiny tiles — of different materials, which include colored stones, glass cameos and golden leaves, the intricate mosaic floor features geometric designs of circles and squares with little figures of dancers, flowers and birds such as magpies and peacocks.
What makes the mosaic unique, however, are three large mythological scenes.
"So far all scenes show naked figures. We are still trying to figure out their meaning. I believe that more clues might come to light as we continue to dig," Curina said.
The scenes are rather unusual. One shows a naked man falling into someone's arms, another displays two naked figures — a man and a woman — wearing jewels. The woman holds a just caught fish, while the man holds two live ducks.
Another extraordinary scene shows a naked man wearing an ivy crown and holding a lotus flower in his right hand.
In his left hand, the mysterious character holds a lituus. This is a crooked cane which in ancient Rome was used by the augurs as a cult instrument. The cane was regarded as a symbol of a priestly group.
The augurs were religious officials who observed natural signs, such as the flight of birds, in order to interpret them as indications of divine approval or disapproval.
"Symbols such as the lotus flower and the ivy crown might hint that this was a private room dedicated to the cult of oriental gods," Curina said.
According to Luigi Malnati, superintendent of archaeological heritage in Emilia Romagna, such pagan scenes must have been pieced together before 380 A.D., the year when the emperor Theodosius proclaimed Christianity the state religion. Indeed, a series of decrees in 391-392 A.D. banned and punished pagan cult practices within the empire.
"This is one of the most important and interesting mosaics in northern Italy. It stands out for its size, design and refined technique," Malnati said.
Roger Ling, a professor of classical art and archaeology at the University of Manchester, U.K., and the author of "Ancient Mosaics," agreed. "It's a sensational discovery," Ling told Doscovery News.
Once fully detached and restored, the mosaic will be put on display at a local museum...A Roman mosaic floor filled with scenes depicting pagan rites and oriental gods has... more
