"The Bible makes no mention of a long-eared, short-tailed creature who delivers decorated eggs to well-behaved children on Easter Sunday; nevertheless, the Easter bunny has become a prominent symbol of Christianity's most important holiday. The exact origins of this mythical mammal are unclear, but rabbits, known to be prolific procreators, are an ancient symbol of fertility and new life. According to some sources, the Easter bunny first arrived in America in the 1700s with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and transported their tradition of an egg-laying hare called "Osterhase" or "Oschter Haws." Their children made nests in which this creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the custom spread across the U.S. and the fabled rabbit's Easter morning deliveries expanded to include chocolate and other types of candy and gifts, while decorated baskets replaced nests. Additionally, children often left out carrots for the bunny in case he got hungry from all his hopping.

Easter EggsEaster is a religious holiday, but some of its customs, such as Easter eggs, are likely linked to pagan traditions. The egg, an ancient symbol of new life, has been associated with pagan festivals celebrating spring. From a Christian perspective, Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus' emergence from the tomb and resurrection. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to at least the 13th century, according to some sources. One explanation for this custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during the Lenten season, so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration.

Easter egg hunts and egg rolling are two popular egg-related traditions. In the U.S., the White House Easter Egg Roll, a race in which children push decorated, hard-boiled eggs across the White House lawn, is an annual event held the Monday after Easter. The first official White House egg roll occurred in 1878, when Rutherford B. Hayes was president. The event has no religious significance, although some people have considered egg rolling symbolic of the stone blocking Jesus' tomb being rolled away, leading to his resurrection. Happy Easter! Easter Traditions: Fake grass, hollow bunnies and egg salad

Up and at 'em, people, it's time to get your Easter on! Today, many denominations of Christians celebrate Jesus Christ's resurrection. Some do so with a trip to church, often followed or preceded by some Easter Bunny and Easter basket hoopla, and finally, hitting an unsuspecting ham with some appetite-obeying fury.

It's all quite lovely, really. Heck, even some non-Christians enjoy the bunny- and egg-themed activities, and why not? Everybody loves treats.

As parents or adults in charge of the Easter process, there are obstacles to overcome, and here in this space we're going to address some of them.

We're going to address Easter basket grass, the cruel trick that is a hollow chocolate bunny, and the most disgusting holiday candy ever that for some reason tons of people love, Peeps.

We'll also talk about the process of coloring eggs, which may be fun for kids but completely bites for adults.

So in the words of the old cartoon version of Superman, "Up, up and away!"

The first thing for inclusion in an Easter basket is the ANNOYING PLASTIC, SHREDDED, GREEN GRASS. That's right, I just went all caps on you for effect. Parents, you just have to deal with the fake grass, unless you're really earthy — happy Earth Day, by the way — and put real grass in there. If you participate in this practice, it's impressive and weird all at the same time.

As for the fake stuff, no matter how blatantly vain or OCD you might be, you'll never be able to keep the pseudo-grass from escaping the basket and finding its way into your shoes, onto the Easter ham, and under your furniture where green dust Easter bunnies will be born. Months will pass and, not unlike the wonder of Christmas tree pine needles, you'll still be cleaning the stuff up as Easter 2010 nears.

They do make edible grass for Easter baskets now, but I have issues with this for several reasons. First off, it makes your child look like a horse. Horses can eat grass, humans shouldn't. Second, if your child enjoys edible Easter basket grass, who knows where else he or she might be when they spot some plastic goodness and have at it because they think it's a legit consumable.

Something to think about today when you're passing the candied yams.

Once you've got the fake grass in the basket, you need to fill it with treats that aren't lame. That includes avoiding chocolate bunnies with no inner gusto, i.e., no chocolate in there. There is nothing worse than a hollow bunny. If there can't be more chocolate inside, there should be something, like a lollipop or a rolled-up scratch ticket. Kids love scratching them! What Easter is complete without some petty gambling? A rhetorical question to be sure.

Peeps are also a cruel and unusual Easter treat, although I'm certainly in the minority writing that. Chewing on a Peep feels like eating sand, and they taste not like marshmallow, but like, well, sweet sand. And yet as a society, we celebrate them. Easter is a time for celebration, though, and full of traditions.
