http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/11/house-to-vote-on-light-bulb-repeal/?smid=tw-nytimesscience&seid=auto
The House is expected to vote as early as Monday night on a measure to repeal efficiency standards for light bulbs that are scheduled to take effect at the beginning of next year.
5:55 p.m. | Updated The vote is now anticipated on Tuesday.
Click here to see vote results: http://politics.nytimes.com/congress/votes/112/house/1/563
The Republican-sponsored repeal bill, H.R. 2417, would undo part of a 2007 energy bill that passed with broad Republican support and was signed into law by former President George W. Bush. The primary author of the light bulb provision in the 2007 law was Representative Fred Upton, Republican of Michigan, now the chairman of the Energy and Commerce committee and the scourge of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Mr. Upton reversed his position on light bulb efficiency late last year while campaigning for the chairmanship of the powerful Energy and Commerce committee. The bulb standard, which does not ban incandescent bulbs but requires them to be more energy-efficient, was opposed by Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and other conservatives as an assault on personal choice.
Mr. Upton said that his support for the original measure had been misinterpreted.
“It was never my goal for Washington to decide what type of light bulbs Americans should use,” he said in a statement. “The public response on this issue is a clear signal that markets – not governments – should be driving technological advancements. I will join my colleagues to vote yes on a bill to protect consumer choice and guard against federal overreach.”
The sponsor of the measure to repeal the bulb law, Representative Joe Barton, Republican of Texas, argues that the new incandescent bulbs, as well as compact fluorescent bulbs and light-emitting diodes, will be far more expensive than traditional bulbs. “We don’t think the federal government should tell people what kind of lighting to use in their homes,” he said on Fox News last month.
The repeal measure will be brought up under a House rule that requires a two-thirds vote for passage, and it is far from clear that enough Democrats will join a near-unanimous Republican caucus to ensure its passage. But even if the House approves the measure, its prospects in the Democratic-run Senate are dim.
Steven Chu, the secretary of energy, said that consumer choice would be preserved and households would see considerable savings in their electric bills when the new bulbs are fully in use.
“These standards do not ban incandescent bulbs,” Mr. Chu said in a conference call with reporters on Friday. He said the new bulbs look like current bulbs, turn on instantly and can be used with dimmers, unlike some compact fluorescents.
“The only difference is they will help American consumers save more money,” he said.
The Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental advocacy group, said that the average American family’s energy costs would be reduced by 7 percent or about $85 a year when the new light bulb standards are fully in place.
In a study released last week, the group said that replacing inefficient old bulbs with new units would eliminate the need for 33 large power plants, lowering electricity costs and harmful pollution.
“Clearly, consumers, the economy and the environment will suffer if these standards are repealed,” said Jim Presswood, the group’s federal energy director. “It also will send the wrong signal to the lighting industry, which has already started making better bulbs.”
One manufacturer of LED lighting systems vigorously defended the new bulb standards, saying they would help create jobs, lower electricity costs and keep the United States competitive with other nations.
“Improvements in energy efficiency can reduce the need for investment in energy infrastructure, cut fuel costs, increase competitiveness, improve consumer welfare, and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Jim Haworth, chief executive of Lighting Science Group, a Florida based manufacturer.
“Lighting is the low-hanging fruit in reducing energy consumption: it accounts for 19% of the world’s energy use,” he added. “There are 4.4 billion traditional light sockets in the United States alone offering a rapid and practical path for billions of dollars in energy savings through the installation of more efficient lighting.”http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/07/11/house-to-vote-on-light-bulb-repeal/?smid=tw-n... more

Consider this - instead of saving the environment, CFLs are actually destroying it. CFLs should be thought of as toxic technology, when mercury contamination, ultraviolet radiation, and radio frequency radiation are factored in. From cradle to grave, CFLs pose a danger to people’s health and well being, as well as adding even more toxicity to the environment. In fact, CFLs do not reduce a person’s carbon footprint and may even increase it in some situations. To make matters even worse, CFLs emit harmful levels of electromagnetic radiation.
Starting in the year 2012, regular incandescent bulbs, the ones invented by Thomas Edison over 100 years ago, will be banned in Canada in the pursuit of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Yet, contrary to popular belief, switching from regular bulbs to CFLs could increase global energy consumption, not reduce it. If that alone does not shake consumer confidence, perhaps the facts that CFLs contain mercury and also emit electromagnetic radiation might give people a wake-up call up to the truth about CFLs.
On the other hand, since CFL producers are being handed a monopoly in the light bulb market by some federal government and are being cheered on by corporatist environmental groups, sales are not about to drop anytime soon.
It seems like the protectors of the environment have jumped ship. Health Canada is simply not doing its job as they ignore the devastating impact of having millions of CFLs in our environment. Why are they sitting by, and allowing the Canadian government to force its citizens to use them?
To make matters even worse, groups such as the Suzuki Foundation and Greenpeace, whom Canadians have come to rely on to protect them from environmental pollutants, have chosen to ignore the potential looming environmental and health risks, and blindly promote the use of CFLs.
Why have environmentalists and the government joined in an alliance with the electrical industry in promoting an undeniably dangerous product? Whose side are they on anyway?
Canadian Health and Safety officials seem to be asleep at the switch, oblivious of the hazards, and environmentalists appear to have sold out, as manufacturers and sellers of CFLs are laughing all the way to the bank. With impunity “los tres amigos”, the manufacturers, the corporatist environmentalist backers and government, are leaving misled consumers to deal with the aftermath of a potential environmental catastrophe.
Meanwhile, the New Zealand government, citing concerns about CFLs lack of efficiency and safety, has lifted its ban on incandescent bulbs. Hopefully other governments will see the wisdom in this decision and follow suit.
Corporatist Environmentalists
Corporatism is the dominant ideology in today’s western democracies. “While the corporatist society maintains a veneer of open criticism and democracy, it squelches opposition to dominant corporate interests by using propaganda and rhetoric to obscure facts and to deter communication among citizens. Corporatism creates conformists who behave like cogs in organizational hierarchies, not responsible citizens,” explains Publishers Weekly, reviewing the book Voltaire’s Bastards by John Ralston Saul. These are just some of the attributes of the ideology that has a strangle hold on our society and, it appears, on our major environmental groups as well...

When the compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) became popular a few years ago, it was a welcome alternative to the toxic, energy-sucking incandescent bulb used around the world.
The light emitting diode (LED) bulbs were fast on the CFL's heels, and even though they're more durable and efficient, many people have avoided upgrading to LEDs because of the high price.

Although CFLs last up to 15 times longer than ordinary bulbs, there is an environmental price to pay. Each bulb contains around 5mg of mercury, which helps convert the electrical current into light.
The amount of mercury is tiny - barely enough to cover the tip of a pen - but that is enough to contaminate up to 6,000 gallons of water beyond safe drinking levels....

A friend of mine sent me the below video,"THE DARK SIDE OF CFL" containing so called facts about compact fluorescent lamps and Dirty Electricity... I didn’t think much of it because this friend is somewhat of a conspiracy theorist and has sent me over the years many "theories" that have surfaced on the Internet with only one aim and that is to inform us of the harm that awaits us in any which way imaginable. But I did research it in an effort to debunk the terrifying and alarming, fundamental message, so I could send it back with a "SNARK YOU’RE WRONG", to my conspiracy theorist buddy.
Regrettably, I couldn’t find even one source that would tell me this is a
load of crap. Then, I thought, Holy Moly can this information be true? I shifted my search to finding out what exactly is DIRTY ELECTRICITY... cause I’ll be damned, if I ever heard of it before... Lo and behold, I came upon this site, Four Components that Comprise Dirty Electricity and other EMFs in a Home. http://www.dirtyelectricity.ca/dirty_electricity_four_components.htm
which explains that dirty electricity is all around us in our modern world...
Excerpt: (Most of the dirty electricity is created by electrical devices in our own homes. Computers, TVs, florescent tube, CFL and low-voltage halogen lighting and virtually all of today's energy-efficient electronic devices induce high levels of high frequency harmonics and electrical"noise" back onto circuits and then into a building's electrical system creating an invisible, powerful, high frequency EMF called "dirty Electricity")
Although the site’s objective, I believe, is to sell you an EMF meter:
(Visit our on-line store and see our complete line of EMF meters, detectors, Graham-Stetzer filters and other proven EMF protection solutions)
I still think it informational. Our world (life itself) is so full of dangers that to go through life fearful of every move you make, is nonsensical and pathetic. FDR’s poignant statement "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself" is just as accurate in today’s microcosm as it was in the dark days leading up to World War II.
Instead of dreading "Dirty Electricity" maybe we should all exercise our
Fight, Flight or Freeze responses on a real honest-to-goodness
threat like what Ron Paul, Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck's delusional
teabaggers are pushing for without their knowledge: FASCISM
Another Franklin Delano Roosevelt quote
"Unhappy events abroad have retaught us two simple
truths about the liberty of a democratic people. The first
truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the
people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where
it becomes stronger than their democratic State itself. That,
in its essence, is fascism— ownership of government
by an individual, by a group or by any other controlling
private power.
The second truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not
safe if its business system does not provide employment and
produce and distribute goods in such a way as to sustain an
acceptable standard of living. Both lessons hit home. Among
us today a concentration of private power without equal in
history is growing."

You’ve heard of water and air pollution, but what about light pollution? Light pollution is all of that artificial light put out by cities and excessive indoor light, both of which have adverse effects on people, wildlife, and the planet.
This article from the Mother Nature Network lists the negative side effects of light pollution:
-Light pollution interferes with wildlife migratory and breeding patterns
-Unnecessary outdoor lighting wastes energy and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions
-Glare from bad lighting leads to unsafe driving conditions, particularly for older motorists
-Constant exposure to artificial lighting may interfere with human metabolism and sleep
How can you help reduce this type of pollution?

Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than predicted only a few years ago, and that the consequences could be severe if we don't keep reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that are trapping heat in our atmosphere. But what can we do about it as individuals? And as emissions from China, India, and other developing nations skyrocket, will our efforts really make any difference?Scientists have reported recently that the world is heating up even faster than... more

One of the peskiest problems of compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) is where to dispose of them when they break or burn out, due to the small amounts of mercury that they contain.
Well, here's some good news on that front! Home Depot is announcing today that it will begin taking back old CFLs in all 1,973 of its U.S. stores. This will be the most widespread recycling program for the bulbs to date. Home Depot will accept any maker's bulbs and due to its spread across the country, this move will bring CFL recycling within reach of most homes. Home Depot estimates that 75% of the nation's home are within 10 miles of a store.
Kudos to Home Depot for doing this.

Why bother? That really is the big question facing us as individuals hoping to do something about climate change, and it’s not an easy one to answer. I don’t know about you, but for me the most upsetting moment in “An Inconvenient Truth” came long after Al Gore scared the hell out of me, constructing an utterly convincing case that the very survival of life on earth as we know it is threatened by climate change. No, the really dark moment came during the closing credits, when we are asked to . . . change our light bulbs. That’s when it got really depressing. The immense disproportion between the magnitude of the problem Gore had described and the puniness of what he was asking us to do about it was enough to sink your heart. Why bother?
