Mass Lesbian Fired From Position As Dean Of Catholic High School By Springfield Diocese

Massachusetts may approve of same-sex marriage, but the Roman Catholic Church does not, and it emphatically does not. This is why Christine M. Judd is no longer the athletic director and dean of students at Cathedral High School. Judd married her wife back in August, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield did not approve. Thus, they did their best to force her to leave. Judd stated of her departure “I was given a choice of termination or resignation. I’m hurt, but I wish the best for Cathedral, its students, the parents, the athletic teams, administration and faculty. I bleed purple.” Purple is the school’s color.

Judd has worked for Cathedral for twelve years. She began there as a science teacher in 1998, and then became dean of students in 2004. In 2007, she became the athletic director. “I married my partner this summer. I was hoping that my loyalty, my professionalism the last twelve years would supersede the current hypocrisy that has already been shown with the Diocese of Springfield.” Regarding the hypocrisy of the diocese, she questioned the probability that there are lay people who work for the Church there who divorce and remarry without an annulment, who use birth control, men who have vasectomies, and people who are pro-choice regarding abortion. All of these are considered to be major ‘no-nos’ in the Catholic Church, but are common among Catholics.

A spokesman for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield, Mark E. Dupont, emphatically pointed to the fact that Judd resigned, but refused any other comment other than “Because it’s an employment matter, we are not at liberty to discuss the specifics.”

Judd is exploring the possibility of legal action since state law gives her the right to marry, but the diocesan policy does not. “Cathedral has nothing to do with this. This was a diocesan decision. In the end, the timing of this issue really affects the kids. That’s where it has the most effect,” Judd stated. The high school’s website still describes Judd as “one of the key members of the faculty and staff who serve as positive role models for the students.”

Dupont maintains “Without being specific to this matter, it should be clear that all employees of our Catholic schools are made aware of our policies and regulations. This includes language that clearly states that whenever by public example, an employee engages in or espouses conduct which contravenes the doctrine and teaching of the Catholic Church, that employee may be subject to disciplinary action. To do otherwise would be in contradiction to the values we believe in and are teaching in these same schools. So while we certainly want to be compassionate and understanding, we must be true to who we are. We are certainly thankful to Ms Judd for her past service at Cathedral High School and wish her the best in the future,”

Farrand Violette has been named interim athletic director for the rest of the year at Cathedral. Violette is their new football coach, and has past experiences as an athletic director. So far, no one has been named to replace Judd as Dean of Students.

Judd may face problems regarding any legal action against the Diocese since a recent lawsuit resulted in religious groups being able to hire and fire people without regards to any special status such as religion or sexuality.Massachusetts may approve of same-sex marriage, but the Roman Catholic Church does... more

Many Scottish reject chance to see Pope during September visit

Glasgow - While the deadline has passed now to get tickets for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Glasgow's Bellahouston Park next month, it emerges that some parishes are returnng more than half of their allocated 400 tickets -- unsold.

As one can read in the Scotland Herald today, sales for the upcoming visit of the Catholic Church's great leader are very disappointing. Not to me, mind you, but to those in parishes and -- as the Herald says -- to those in the Papal Visit office who will be counting how many returns they have received.

It seems clear now that the uptake will fall short of the 100,000 pilgrims expected to turn out for the historic mass at Bellahouston Park, Glasgow, on September 16. Even those projected 100,000 are a far cry from the Mass at Bellahouston in 1982 (by Pope John Paul II) that was attended by 300,000 faithful and spectators.

No one, of course, dares to say openly that John Paul II was a more popular pontiff than Benedict XVI, and the Herald article doesn't at all mention the possibility that the many catholic child abuse scandals could have something to do with the lack of people flocking to watch and listen to the church's primate -- but we can all make up our own minds.

Priests of the affected parishes have been scratching their heads while trying to find reasons for this failure to attract a big crowd, and what they came up with was the potential for bad weather in mid-September, opposed to a balmy day in June of 1982. They do have a point there, but I'm sure it's just one point among many.

In their great wisdom and disregard for the flock, organisers expect people to be in the park more than 2 hours before the pope is expected on stage, there will be no seating in the park which means people will have to remain standing for more than four hours, from 3.00pm at the latest until 7.30 when the event is scheduled to end.

September in Scotland can be cold, can be rainy, can be windy. However, true fans are known not to mind wading through muddy fields for days in order to see their favorite bands (see Glastonbury, Woodstock, Pink Pop), and that so many Scots are not prepared for a little suffering in this case speaks books.

The event is expected to cost £1.5 million, money that most likely would have been better spent on purchasing condoms for Africa. For the pope, a disappointing attendance will not really matter -- he's above such materialistic concerns. Author Anne Rice 'quits' being a Christian over attitudes to gays and women

Anne Rice, the author of Interview with a Vampire, has "quit" Christianity over the faith's "hostile" attitudes to gay rights, women and contraception.

She converted to Catholicism 12 years ago but announced on her Facebook yesterday that although she remained "committed to Christ", she no longer wanted to be part of the faith.

Rice was brought up Catholic but was atheist for many years until vowing at the age of 57 to dedicate her writing entirely to Christ.

On Tuesday, she posted a link on her Facebook page to a story about a US Republican-linked punk rock Christian ministry which allegedly said that Muslim countries which execute gay people are more "moral" than the US.

Rice wrote: "No wonder people despise us, Christians, and think we are an ignorant and violent lot. I don't blame them. This kind of thing makes me weep. Maybe commitment to Christ means not being a Christian.

On Wednesday, she added: "For those who care, and I understand if you don't: Today I quit being a Christian. I'm out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being 'Christian' or to being part of Christianity.

"It's simply impossible for me to 'belong' to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I've tried. I've failed. I'm an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.

"I quit being a Christian. I'm out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen."

She updated her page today to say that her faith in Christ was "central" but "following Christ does not mean following His followers".

Rice's son Christopher is gay and contributes to the US gay magazine Advocate.
