“Homophobia” is an intensely dramatic short film by Austrian writer-director Gregor Schmidinger, which was released last week in support of The International Day Against Homophobia. The film deals with a theme that’s of major concern in our present-day political and social worlds: homophobia, the fear of homosexuals and of their way of life. “Homophobia” also deals with a perhaps even deeper issue: the fear of oneself being homosexual.
The film tells the story of an adolescent boy serving in the Austrian Military Forces, who experiences homosexual feelings towards one of his comrades. It’s their last night serving on the Austrian-Hungarian border, where they are socially isolated and armed with loaded weapons. On their final patrol, underlying tensions reach a climax, and the young boy must confront both the judgements of others and his own self-understanding.
“Homophobia” explores the difficulties faced by many young homosexuals, and, in a wider sense, outsiders who have to fight against social disapproval. While the subject of fear, persecution and coming out is familiar territory in gay cinema, “Homophobia” takes this important topic and, by telling a compellingly intense story focused on a single main character, is successfully able to universalize it.
This piece includes color photographs, as well as the fiercely poignant short film.

Imagine the uproar from these ridiculous, narrow-minded dipshits if an Atheist got up there and blamed all of our ills on Christianity, or if a Pagan got up there and blamed our problems on our stewardship – or lack thereof – of the planet. We’d never hear the end of it.
Take a look at what the GOP leadership allowed inside the US Capitol on taxpayer's dime...

We’ve all seen Romney turn around on a dime and renounce beliefs firmly held just hours ago. His lack of conscience, empathy and remorse makes it possible for him to flat out deny his former positions with the utmost sincerity. Video evidence to the contrary somehow doesn’t seem to bother the Romneys of this world who adhere to the Roger Ailes doctrine that truth is “whatever people will believe”.

All in all, five former Romney classmates have come forward to share their memories about the Lauber incident. Sadly, John Lauber can’t speak for himself since he passed away in 2004. But we have the words of David Seed, one of the boys who witnessed the incident all those years ago. He ran into Lauber in an airport bar several years ago and apologized for not doing more to stop the bullying. According to Seed, Lauber said, “It was horrible. It’s something I have thought about a lot since then.”
Mitt Romney claimed that he didn't recall the incident.

"WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's election-year vagueness on gay marriage is coming under fresh scrutiny.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan broke ranks with the White House on Monday, stating his unequivocal support for same-sex marriage one day after Vice President Joe Biden suggested that he supported gay marriage as well.
Obama aides worked to manage any political fallout. They said the back-to-back remarks by two top administration officials represented personal viewpoints and were not part of a coordinated effort to lay groundwork for a shift in the president's position. Obama aides also tried to use the latest flare-up in the gay-marriage debate to shine a light on GOP rival Mitt Romney's history of equivocating on some gay-rights issues, an attempt to turn a potential political problem into an opportunity.
Obama, who supports most gay rights, has stopped short of backing gay marriage. Without clarification, he's said for the past year and a half that his personal views on the matter are "evolving."
The White House held firm on Monday to that position, which polls show puts the president increasingly at odds with his party and the majority of Americans on gay marriage. But with Biden and Duncan's comments reinvigorating the debate, Obama is likely to face renewed pressure to clarify his views ahead of the November election.""WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's election-year vagueness on gay... more

Two Colorado State University freshmen who suffered severe beatings at the hands of their school's football players were both expressing their anger after Fort Collins Police announced their decision to charge four people with disorderly conduct.
Freshmen J.D. Haley and Donny Gocha both suffered injuries that included black eyes, a broken nose, a lacerated lip, chipped teeth and even the imprint of a bootmark on Gocha's back. Gocha's injuries were so severe in fact, that the Fort Collins Coloradoan reports police said he looked like the "Elephant Man."

An anti-gay group is flying a banner "warning" people about Disney World's Gay Day. We want to fly a banner that fights their hate-filled message.

We're average Americans against hatred, or, as we like to call ourselves, the Non-A-Holes.
You may have heard about Walt Disney World's unofficial "Gay Day." Every year, an LGBT cultural group organizes an event for same-sex couples and their families to attend theme parks and other attractions around the country as a community, knowing that they will be accepted for who they are, rather than endure judgment and ridicule from other park-goers.
This year, the misleadingly-named "Florida Family Association" is flying a banner above Orlando, warning "traditional" families that the Gay Day is approaching, so that they can keep their children inside and avoid having to talk to them about such incendiary topics as two men or two women being in love.
Last year, their banner read "Warning: Gay Day at Disney 6/4." They haven't announced this year's banner text, though we can assume it will be equally clever.
Now, the Florida Family Association is clearly a bunch of loonies who can't leave their houses for fear a multi-racial couple might be holding hands at the Stop and Shop, but as ridiculous as they are, this kind of thinking continues to have power. The arc of history bends toward justice and acceptance, but for the time being, those who believe that people aren't people if they don't love someone with the right genitals, are out there, and though they may not win the war, they do win their share of battles.
So let's show them that this one isn't theirs. Let's fly a banner above Orlando that reads "WARNING: Homophobes Loose in Orlando. Hide Your Kids." We need about $1,200 to run the banner for two hours above Orlando. Please join us, the Non A-Holes by clicking the donate link on this page and letting the Florida Family Association know that haters can be haters, but, to quote The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, "Love is never wrong, and so it never dies."
Thanks.

Maverick Couch, a gay 16-year-old high school student in southwest Ohio, is suing his school district after the principal prohibited him from wearing a T-shirt declaring "Jesus Is Not a Homophobe."
Couch has been arguing with Waynesville High School since last April, when principal Randy Gebhardt first told Couch to turn his shirt inside out. Couch was observing Gay Lesbian & Straight Education Network's National Day of Silence, an annual event across the country when students spend a day in silence to call attention to bullying and harassment of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender teens in schools.
The shirt was "sexual in nature and therefore indecent and inappropriate in a school setting," claimed a lawyer for the school district in a Feb. 24 letter to a lawyer for Couch.
Lambda Legal, a national organization advocating for lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people, filed suit on Tuesday against Gebhardt and Waynesville school district on Couch's behalf. Lambda also filed a motion asking for temporary restraining order so that Couch could wear the shirt on an upcoming National Day of Silence.Maverick Couch, a gay 16-year-old high school student in southwest Ohio, is suing his... more

On 12 March 2012, the governor of St Petersburg Mr Georgiy Poltavchenko signed a law banning the so-called 'propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexualism and transgenderism, and paedophilia to minors'.
Today it became known that the governor of St. Petersburg Georgiy Poltavchenko signed the homophobic law, imposing administrative fines on the so-called "propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexuality, transgenderism" and paedophilia to minors.
Authors of the law maintain that it is designed to "protect children from information that can harm their physical, intellectual, moral, and spiritual development". The term "propaganda" is defined as any uncontrolled and targeted distribution of information through any accessible means to minors that can […] form an incorrect perception of social equivalence between traditional and non-traditional conjugal relations". Authorities project "traditional values" and clerical rhetoric onto politics, and prioritize "interests of majority" over the value of human individuality. We realize that today, fascist-like rhetoric in Russia is becoming basis for legislative activity.
The text was adopted in its third reading on 29 February 2012 by Saint Petersburg city parliament. The legislation will amend the Law of Saint Petersburg 'On administrative offences in St Petersburg' and introduces an administrative responsibility relating to the dissemination of information about the LGBT community and its rights. During a 2008 “Press & People of Faith in Politics” forum, Rick Santorum described to the Democratic Party as “the party of Woodstock,” and accused lawmakers of “prey[ing] upon our most basic primal lusts.” Asked to name a couple of words he’d heard attached to religion and politics in his years in the Senate, Santorum listed “moderate,” “ultra-conservative,” “liberal,” and “zealous” before launching into a full-on tirade against Democrats:
“Woodstock is the great American orgy. This is who the Democratic Party has become. They have become the party of Woodstock. The prey upon our most basic primal lusts, and that’s sex. And the whole abortion culture, it’s not about life. It’s about sexual freedom. That’s what it’s about. Homosexuality. It’s about sexual freedom.”
Of course Santorum will position Republicans as the “anti-homosexuality” party if he wins the nomination and has pledged to annul all same-sex marriages and personally campaign in every state against marriage equality.

Gay rights have vastly improved over the decades, but have we progressed enough? This lively on-the sofa discussion with Jason Smith a freelance journalist and director of Birmingham salon explores the state of ‘queer progress’ today, from Clinton and Cameron’s advocacy of tying foreign aid to gay rights to Stonewall calling for a policing of anti-gay speech in the playground. Has intolerance of anti-gay intolerants lead to a tyranny of the minority? Are gay individuals so vulnerable they now need posh protectors to police our views and intervene in African states?Gay rights have vastly improved over the decades, but have we progressed enough?
