Raising teens in this day and age is a tough feat for any parent, much less single parents or those who are swamped with work and younger children to care for, in addition to their hormonal teenager. Knowing when to say when can be difficult because you want to give your teen the freedom to make their own choices, while providing them with the guidance they need during these life-changing years.

OUTRAGED parents of a group of high school students say they believe school administrators crossed the line after they disciplined their children, who are members of the “Christmas Sweater Club,” for passing out candy canes and spreading holiday cheer on school property!
Mother Kathleen Flannery said an administrator called her and explained “not everyone wants Christmas cheer. That suicide rates are up over Christmas, and that they should keep their cheer to themselves, perhaps.”
All 10 members of the Christmas Sweater Club–a group of teens at Battlefield High School who wear festive sweaters and sing Christmas carols–were punished with detention and two hours of cleaning for an unauthorized candy giveaway that faculty say created a disturbance, littered property and could’ve caused harm.
They handed out 2-inch wrapped mini candy canes that are so delicate, they can break by touching them. But staff insist that the peppermints are potentially dangerous weapons.
“They said the candy canes are weapons because you can sharpen them with your mouth and stab people with them,” said Sylar Torbett, a junior.
When the sweater club members tossed some of the candies to fellow students, faculty feared it could cause harm.
“They said, ‘maliciously maim students with the intent to injure.’ And I don’t think any of us here intentionally meant to injure anyone, or did,” added Zakk Rhine, a junior.
The school principal didn’t want to go on record with the details about the incident, but supported the disciplinary action and insists there is “a lot more to it.”

CUERNAVACA, Mexico — Soldiers in Mexico have captured a 14-year-old U.S. citizen suspected of being a drug gang hitman as he attempted to travel to the United States.
Edgar Jimenez, known as "El Ponchis," is believed to work for the South Pacific drug cartel in Morelos state, outside Mexico City, the army said on Friday. Media reports last month on the search for a boy with the same nom de guerre said he could be as young as 12.
The boy was caught late Thursday as he boarded a plane in the city of Cuernavaca. He was traveling to the border city of Tijuana with two of his sisters, one of whom is believed to be the lover of one of the cartel's bosses, the army said.
He was brought to a regional office of the Mexico's attorney general's Office in Cuernavaca on Friday and told reporters there that he participated in at least four decapitations.
He said he was "drugged and under threat that if I didn't, they would kill me."
"El Ponchis" made headlines last month as reports of his grisly murders, including beheadings, surfaced. He acknowledged having killed at least seven people under the influence of drugs provided by a cartel leader, according to an army statement.
The Mexican daily newspaper La Razon said in November that "El Ponchis" was paid $3,000 for each murder he committed.
The three Jimenez siblings had allegedly wanted to cross to San Diego, where they have relatives.
Murders committed by minors, ranging from shoplifting to murder for the cartels, have risen across Mexico this year, state officials say. Parents in the violent cities of Ciudad Juarez and Tijuana on the U.S. border say children as young as eight want to grow up to be drug lords, as the thrills and wealth of the trafficking world touches their lives.CUERNAVACA, Mexico — Soldiers in Mexico have captured a 14-year-old U.S. citizen... more

Economists have been begging this question for many years now – would lower income teens score higher in school if they had access to a personal computer? At age 13, Hope Witsell struggled in middle school. Not because her class work at Shields Middle School in Ruskin, Florida, was challenging, but because Hope was being bullied.
Her friend, Kyla Stich, told CNN that fellow students would "walk up to her and call her 'slut,' 'whore,' and they would sometimes, they would call her 'skank' and just be really cruel to her."
Another friend, Lexi Leber, said, "We had to make like a wall, we had people surrounding her, and she had to be in the middle because people would come by and try to hit her and push her into a locker or something.
"She was afraid to walk alone, she was afraid someone would do something to her, like verbally attack her, so she would always have someone with her," Leber added.
This all started in the spring of 2009 during the last week of school.
Friends and family say Hope had "sexted" a picture of her breasts to her boyfriend. Another girl from school, they say, got her hands on the photo and sent it to students at six different schools in the area.
Before Hope could do anything to stop it, that photo had gone viral.
The school alerted Hope's parents. Her mother, Donna Witsell, told CNN how she learned about the photo.
"The assistant principal had a meeting with my husband and I and pretty much told us that he did not see the image but that he had heard that it was Hope and when he confronted Hope, Hope did not deny it. She wasn't proud of it but she didn't lie," Hope's mother said.At age 13, Hope Witsell struggled in middle school. Not because her class work at... more

Yesterday, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) held a press conference to announce that the first Monday in October will be recognized as Child Health Day(http://bit.ly/91YOLu). “This is at time when we all come together to rededicate ourselves to Arizona’s children,” she said during her speech at the Arizona Children’s Center in Maricopa, AZ. Children’s advocates, however, had one word for Brewer’s proclamation: “ironic(http://bit.ly/b9BoUk).” In touting her devotion to “the health and well-being of our children,” it seems Brewer failed to mention that the agenda she “spearheaded(http://bit.ly/91YOLu)” directly undermines their health and well-being:
> During the past two fiscal years, however, Brewer has agreed to cut more than $72
> million from government-funded children’s health services. The cuts were part of
> $2.1 billion in state budget reductions that were focused primarily on health care,
> education and human services.
> Brewer also spearheaded legislation to eliminate the state Medicaid program known
> as KidsCare, though the federal health care law required the Legislature to reverse
> the decision. Yet Brewer imposed an enrollment freeze in January that has lowered
> the number of children receiving health care coverage to about 27,000 from 47,000.
> Brewer also proposed the elimination of the Early Childhood Development and
> Health Board and redirecting its money into the state’s general fund. The proposal
> became a ballot measure, and voters will decide the issue in November’s election.
Brewer also wants voters to approve Proposition 302(http://bit.ly/a6dF0l), a bill “that would kill the First Things First program designed to improve early childhood health and development.”
According to the East Valley Tribune(http://bit.ly/a6dF0l), she said “there is nothing inconsistent about the proclamation she signed and the spending cuts she has championed.” The proclamation, apparently, was specifically “designed to focus on preventative care for children” to make children “aware” of “eating good food and watching that they don’t become obese and exercise daily.” As for the spending cuts, she said it’s “unfortunate(http://bit.ly/a6dF0l)” but(http://bit.ly/91YOLu) “hard decisions are going to have to be made.”
But with 23 percent of Arizona children living in poverty, up from 20 percent in 2007, children’s advocates say it’s more than unfortunate. Because of Brewer’s current freeze, nearly 53,000 KidsCare applications have not been processed and more than 70,000 children(http://bit.ly/b9BoUk) have been denied coverage. According to the Children’s Action Alliance, such a freeze means that “more than 100 kids a day are being denied health insurance coverage.”
Protecting Arizona’s Families Coalition’s Tim Schmaltz says Brewer ignored numerous possible revenue sources that she could have used “that would not attack children and children’s health,” such as taxing spa treatments or country club memberships. “Rather than just stand up and proclaim that we care about children, we should act like we care about children,’’ he said(http://bit.ly/bvPMCZ).Yesterday, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) held a press conference to announce that the... more

The police officer went to the teenage boys house and placed him in handcuffs once he found out that he may have had sex with his 14 yr old daughter. This video shows what happened- and how he even rips on his own daughter. As a parent of kids and another one on the way I am aware that eventually they will each have sex and I may not know when it happens. But if I am aware of it happening I dont feel you have any right to go to the other kids house to harass the kid that maybe sleeping with your child...its a bit embarrassing to not only yourself but for the teens and it is hard enough being a teenager without having your dad stalk ya so much he goes after the first guy you have sex with.
The officer says he had been asked by the kids mom to check up on him in the past but he uses his daughter sleeping with him to cuff him and go from there. Its a parent stepping out of line.

HUBER HEIGHTS — A group of 2010 Wayne High School graduates are calling on city council to help their efforts of getting fluoride removed from the city’s drinking water as a matter of public safety.
“We were shocked to see there was a substantial amount of fluoride in the water supply,” said Chase Warden, 18, speaking at Monday’s city council meeting. “Fluoride is a very toxic substance.”
Warden and a group of his friends said their research of independent sources found that the benefits of fluoride are outweighed by the risks, which include fluorosis, a dental condition characterized by cracking, mottling and pitting of the teeth.
The teenagers cited the city’s 2009 Annual Water Quality Report as proof of there being dangerous levels of fluoride in Huber Heights’ drinking water.
The report indicates the city’s drinking water contains between 0.82 to 1.14 milligrams per liter of fluoride.
But according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drinking water is safe as long as it does not reach the maximum contaminant level of 4 grams per litre.
The CDC estimates about 70 percent of U.S. residents who have public water systems receive fluoridated water. The agency said fluoridating public water was one of the 10 greatest public health interventions in the U.S. in the 20th century because of the dramatic decline in tooth decay it helped facilitate.
