(April 20) -- Thailand's army announced today that it was ready to use live ammunition against anti-government protesters, prompting the Red Shirt demonstrators to cancel a march into Bangkok's financial district they had planned for today.
Until now the army's guidelines laid out a seven-step process ending in the use of tear gas and rubber bullets to curb the protests, now in their sixth week.
But an army spokesman told reporters today that "we can no longer use the soft to hard steps," and that soldiers were authorized to act "decisively" in a four-step process ending with the use of live bullets in the event of violent clashes.

After six weeks of protests by the Red Shirt demonstrators, the Thai army said it was prepared to use live ammunition on the protesters.
"If they try to break the line, we will start using tear gas, and if they do break the line, we need to use weapons to deal with them decisively," said the spokesman, Col. Sansern Kaewkamnerd.
The Red Shirts are calling for new elections and the ousting of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva. The military, which has played a prominent role in Thai politics for decades, has said that the protesters are arming themselves with grenades, acid and sharpened bamboo poles.
A Red Shirt leader, Nattawut Saikua, told reporters that a march into Silom, Bangkok's banking district, had been canceled because armed troops had already been deployed there.
"When these troops are withdrawn, we will march to Silom," the BBC quoted him as saying, although there was no indication the military was ready to stand down.
"We will fortify our rally campground to ward off any invasion before we go out to wage a big war," he was quoted as saying by The Associated Press.
The protests have been largely nonviolent, with Red Shirts occupying key commercial areas of the city and in some cases even shaking hands with anti-riot police. But 25 people died April 10 when security forces tried to clear demonstrators from a section of the capital.
Live ammunition, which the military has maintained could be shot into the air to warn off protesters, is believed to have been used in the April 10 confrontation, although some officials deny it, the BBC reported.
The Red Shirts, made up mostly of the rural poor from northern Thailand, are mainly supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by the military in 2006. Abhisit, who is seen as representing the business elite and Bangkok's middle class, came to power through a parliamentary vote.
As a result of that clash, and the continued sit-ins, tourism has slumped in Thailand, with hotel occupancy in the capital down to 20 percent from its normal 80 percent at this time, a government spokesman told The New York Times.(April 20) -- Thailand's army announced today that it was ready to use live... more

The Chinese people went to Tian'anmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) Square by the hundreds of thousands. They did not know what would happen to them, to their families and yet they came. They protested and fought for their liberty in a country that has rarely seen any. When the soldiers came with their guns and batons they argued their case and pleaded with the soldiers to defend the people. After all, they were brothers and sons and fathers of the very same people they had been ordered to oppress. All they knew is they wanted rights and liberties. They wanted to be free. Then, the massacre began and still they shouted as they ran and dodged bullets. All the while, others were dropping around them. How could their own countrymen attack them? The worst was yet to come. The tanks are spotted heading towards the crowds. One single man with courage walked up to the front tank and blocked it's path. The driver tried to steer around the man but the man persisted. This man walks up to the tank and climbs aboard. He talks to the soldiers aboard the tank and gives them a gift. As the man climbs down there is movement in the tank. The tank tries to maneuver around the man and again he gets in the tanks way. Several soldiers come outside and talk with him and he instructs them to turn the tanks around. Soldiers and citizens were all moved by the courage of this one man. Sadly, China is still under a Communist government.
Do we need to have tanks rolling down the streets before we notice the signs of tyranny? Our jobs are disappearing, the dollar is shrinking like new jeans in the dryer. You have been robbed of your grandchildrens' tax money by the Federal Reserve and Timothy Geithner. Your government wants to monitor your every move and even scan your brain for your thoughts. Is it apathy that keeps you from making a move? The Chinese people came unarmed to fight an armed army. In this country all we need to do is make some noise and demand some answers. What is stopping the American people? Where is your voice? All of the signs of fascism beating on our door but where is the outrage? The latest bombing...it looks like rogue elements of the government were involved. The killing of 7 CIA agents, done by a CIA triple agent, so they're saying. 9/11....the facts are adding up in favor of inside job. Stand up people, before it's too late. Remember, if we wait for one person to stand for everyone once the tank is rolling it's already too late. The time is now to make your voice heard. Tell Obama We make the rules and We want open government, no more lobbyists, no more corruption, no more lies and WE WANT OUR MONEY AND OUR COUNTRY BACK! We must demand change now or we've lost the country our ancestors worked so hard to build. Please let your voice be heard and make a difference now!
