Women have a subconscious fear of getting fat, a study has found.
When they see an overweight woman, their brain reacts negatively, increasing feelings of unhappiness and even selfloathing, say researchers.
While this is common in anorexics and others with eating disorders, the experts found it also happens in healthy women with no obvious worries about their weight.
Men, however, showed no such response.
The study suggests women are under such pressure to conform to certain body shapes that even those happy and healthy have a subconscious fear of getting fat.
The research in the U.S. used MRI scans to study the reaction of the brain to images of strangers for the journal Personality and Individual Differences.
When women caught sight of an overweight, female stranger, it set off a reaction in the part of the brain that processes 'identity and self reflection'.
A similar test on men showed no such reaction.

6-year-old with weapon suspended for 45 days
Zachary Christian is likely having a rough day, he's facing 45 days of reform school for bringing his Cub Scout eating utensil to school. I'm not sure about you, but thinking back to my time as a six-year-old it was all my parents could do to keep me from bringing my cool new stuff to school. It didn't matter that they could potentially get broken, the urge to show and tell was too great. I wonder what noted Eagle Scout, David Lynch, would have to say about this story? [boingboing]

When will Obama end Don't Ask Don't Tell?
And lastly, Current News online producer Andrew Fitzgerald posted this story on the Current News blog, and quite frankly I'm not surprised that it's picked up steam.
"President Obama gave a speech at the dinner and promised (again) to end "Don't Ask Don't Tell". It was an important night for Obama, who's commitment to the gay rights movement has been in question lately.
So that was Saturday night and then Sunday there was the big march. And meanwhile online, people were pointing out that the speech Obama gave was more or less a recycled campaign speech.
And so not 24 hours after the speech came this from CNBC Chief Washington Correspondent John Harwood who said the Obama Administration wasn't worried about gay activists. He said:
"Barack Obama is doing well with 90% or more of Democrats so the White House views this opposition as really part of the Internet left fringe....For a sign of how seriously the White House does or doesn't take this opposition, one adviser told me those bloggers need to take off the pajamas, get dressed, and realize that governing a closely divided country is complicated and difficult.""
So what's your take? Should approval rating factor in here? When is the right time to push forward on this issue? Weigh in here.[Current News Blog]

"TOKYO -- As women in the United States and across the industrialized world get fatter, most Japanese women are getting skinnier.
Still, many view themselves as overweight.
"I am quite fat, actually," said Michie Takagi, a 70-year-old grandmother and retired clothing store executive. She has a body mass index (BMI) of 19.9, which is at the thin end of normal. While the average American woman has gained about 25 pounds over the past 30 years, Takagi has gained 4.5 pounds, typical for her age cohort in Japan, according to U.S. and Japanese government figures.
Skinnier still are Japanese women younger than 60, who were thin by international standards three decades ago and who, taken as a group, have since been steadily losing weight.
The trend is most pronounced among women in their 20s. A quarter-century ago, they were twice as likely to be thin as overweight; now they are four times more likely to be thin. For U.S. women of all ages, obesity rates have about doubled since 1980, rising from 17 percent to 35 percent.
Social pressure -- women looking critically at other women -- is the most important reason female skinniness is ascendant in Japan, according to Hisako Watanabe, a child psychiatrist and assistant professor of pediatrics at the Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo.
"Japanese women are outstandingly tense and critical of each other," said Watanabe, who has spent 34 years treating women with eating disorders. "There is a pervasive habit among women to monitor each other with a serious sharp eye to see what kind of slimness they have."
Public health experts say that younger Japanese women, as a group, have probably become too skinny for their own good. Restricted calorie consumption is slowing down their metabolisms, the average birth weight of their babies is declining, and their risk of death in case of serious illness is rising.
"I would advise these women to eat when they are hungry," said Satoshi Sasaki, a professor of preventive epidemiology at the University of Tokyo School of Public Health. "They should be satisfied with a normal body." "
Read the full article in the link below. The quote at the end by Sasaki is quite entertaining as well!

A new study revealed that drinking red wine might help keep a woman’s weight in check. Low-fat or low-carb, which one do you prefer? Which one works best for you? Do you even know? Well you’re in luck if you don’t; a new study revealed that a genetic test can help people choose which diet is more effective in helping them lose weight. The study followed 133 overweight women for a year. All the women “with a genetic predisposition to benefit from a low-carbohydrate diet lost 2 1/2 times as much weight as those on the same diet without the predisposition,” reports Ron Winslow from The Wall Street Journal. Also, women with a “genetic makeup that favored a low-fat diet lost substantially more weight than women who curbed fat calories without low-fat genes,” says Winslow.Low-fat or low-carb, which one do you prefer? The flame-haired singer, 24, insists her body shape is natural and says she doesn't starve herself.
She said: "Everyone talks about my weight, which is ridiculous. I'm a size six and I'm not ashamed of that.
"I have a naturally small frame. I've not starved myself or exercised every day.
"It's irresponsible for people to obsess over it because I don't want girls to feel they have to be the same shape."

Most 12-year-olds in Britain think they are too fat, while half of the country's six-year-olds say they would like to be skinnier.
Half the six-year-olds asked to pick their ideal body shape from a range of digitally altered images of themselves chose one that was three sizes smaller than the real image – the slimmest option they could choose.
Many of the girls questioned in the study, by Cambridge University, said they thought being skinnier would make them more popular.

Caroline McCarthy writes that Kevin Smith's response to being kicked off of a Southwest flight because he was "foo fat," "may be the best example we've seen yet of how Twitter and other forms of new-media mass communication are shaping that old industry known as public relations. Nobody walks around with a Twitter follower count or blog URL painted on his or her forehead, and many extremely popular bloggers still live in relative physical anonymity, which means that the customer relations business is like a game of Minesweeper--you can never be sure what might blow up in your face."

Smith says the airline made a mistake in trying to board him as a standby passenger then giving him the boot.

When it comes to birth control, women usually bear the brunt of the responsibility. Generally you may get a man to carry a condom, but not even that all of the time. So, you make sure to take things into your own hands to avoid becoming pregnant.
For many women that means taking some sort of birth control. Many of today’s birth control options come in pill or shot form and are something that work within the body to keep the body from getting pregnant. But this is not all they do.
