Hundreds of penguins wash up on Brazilian coast
Also, numerous other sea birds, five dolphins and three giant sea turtles
By Mariano Castillo, CNN
July 22, 2010 11:19 a.m. EDT
__
(CNN) -- Biologists suspect that unusually cold waters off the coast of Brazil were responsible for the deaths of more than 550 penguins that washed up on shore in the past 10 days.
Since July 11, about 556 dead penguins have appeared on beaches, Thiago do Nascimento, a biologist at the Peruibe Aquarium, told CNN.
At the beach of Praia Grande alone, on the Sao Paulo coast, more than 170 penguins have washed up on shore since Friday, according to the local government.
It is not unusual for penguins to show up on the Brazilian coast during their migration, but most of the time, they are alive, said another biologist, Isabelle Nunes.
Necropsies performed on many of the penguins show that they had no food in their stomachs and probably starved to death, Nascimento said, adding that cold weather probably contributed to their deaths.
Nunes said it is possible that the cold waters, brought on by a regional cold front, made the fish that the penguins eat seek other waters.
More tests are being conducted, Nunes said.
Farther north, on the famous beaches of Rio de Janeiro, penguin appearances and rescues have become common in recent years.
It's normal for Magellan penguins to leave their colonies in the Antarctic in an annual migration in search of fish, following the plankton-rich, frigid water currents traveling north along the coast of South America. What has changed is that they are increasingly unable to return home because they get sick, weak or disoriented for reasons that have yet to be determined.
Climate change, overfishing and pollution of the water all could contribute to the penguins becoming lost.
The Niteroi Zoo, near Rio de Janeiro, first began receiving penguins for rescue in 1999. Since then, they have received an increasing number of the birds, peaking with 1,000 penguins in 2008.
CNN's Rafael Romo contributed to this report.

Dozens of Brazilian natives camped out in front of Brazil's Congress on Monday (April 19) to protest the infrastructure projects they say will threaten the survival of Amazon tribes.
The construction of the 11,000 megawatt Belo Monte dam was the focus of the protest staged by some 80 members of several tribes to mark Brazil's national Indians Day.
Indian rights groups say the controversial $17-billion dollar project, which has also sparked protests by environmentalists, will displace thousands of local residents and harm the sensitive Amazon rain forest.
The Indians performed rituals in the heart of Brazil's capital city to oppose the construction of other dams, power lines, roads and gas pipelines planned in the Amazon region.
Indian Chief Corubo, of the Amazon's Vale do Javari region, said the Belo Monte dam and other projects would not only harm the environment, but also slaughter tribes.
"Large sums of money are pouring in from Europe, France, Switzerland, Germany, China and Japan. They are occupying all of the Amazon, building dams and water deposits for their own benefit. They don't care about what will become of the Indian lands. They (Indians of the Xingu valley) will be forced out of their lands, they won't have homes. The indigenous population will be practically massacred," he said.
Corubo also criticized developed countries for investing in projects that damage the environment.
"For those reasons we ask that they have consciousness of the environment. The indigenous population protects the environment; it has policies for the future, because in the future... The ozone layer is screaming for help... In 20 years the ozone layer will be destroyed and the first world countries don't see that, they don't want to look," he said.
Government leaders say the Belo Monte project is crucial to ensure power supplies for one of the world's fastest growing economies.
Indians fear this and other projects will bring more loggers, wildcat miners, pollution and disease to the Amazon rainforest. Many tribes are already struggling to survive with land disputes and diseases that plague the region.Dozens of Brazilian natives camped out in front of Brazil's Congress on Monday... more

Hundreds of rescue workers scrambled on Thursday, April 8 to find residents buried by a landslide near Rio de Janeiro as the death toll from heavy rains in Brazil's second-largest city rose to 153. Search teams rescued 21 people from the wreckage of houses swept away by a mudslide late on Wednesday in the city of Niteroi, across a bay from Rio. They said six bodies were pulled from the mud and another 70 are believed missing from that incident alone. The heaviest rains in more than 40 years, which started on Monday, triggered close to 200 mudslides that crushed shacks in hillside slums, causing most of the deaths and leaving thousands of people homeless.
Most of the damage was concentrated in slums where about a fifth of Rio's people live, often in precarious shacks. The neighborhood of Morro do Bumba, where the Wednesday night landslide occurred, was built atop a former garbage dump. Niteroi was the worst affected area with at least 85 people dead, the fire department said, while 48 were killed in Rio.Hundreds of rescue workers scrambled on Thursday, April 8 to find residents buried by... more

Micro-philanthropy: A new model of creating social change.
Here' how it works: We arrive in a country, assess the needs of local community, seek out the best way to help and then apply our financial resources to improve the situation at hand. Whether it's medicine for rural health clinics or wheelchairs for physically-challenged people, every dollar we distribute goes DIRECTLY to those in need.
This is the most effective model for international aid. Check it out:
