i thought this was very interesting..

WASHINGTON (AP) — New evidence shows humans lived in North America more than 14,000 years ago, 1,000 years earlier than had previously been known. Discovered in a cave in Oregon, fossil feces yielded DNA indicating these early residents were related to people living in Siberia and East Asia, according to a report in Thursday's online edition of the journal Science.
"This is the first time we have been able to get dates that are undeniably human, and they are 1,000 years before Clovis," said Dennis L. Jenkins, a University of Oregon archaeologist, referring to the Clovis culture, well known for its unique spear-points that have been studied previously.
Humans are widely believed to have arrived in North America from Asia over a land-bridge between Alaska and Siberia during a warmer period. A variety of dates has been proposed and some are in dispute.
Few artifacts were found in the cave, leading Jenkins to speculate that these people stayed there only a few days at a time before moving on, perhaps following game animals or looking for other food.
The petrified poop — coprolites to scientists — is yielding a look at the diet of these ancient Americans, Jenkins said.
While the analysis is not yet complete, he said there are bones of squirrels, bison hair, fish scales, protein from birds and dogs and the remains of plants such as grass and sunflowers.

Army Spc. Jorge G. Sandoval, the first of 3 soldiers in the "baiting" trial, was acquitted of murder, but found guilty of planting evidence to justify the shootings.
The LA Times article provides a disturbing description of one of the events in question - disturbing both in how the Iraqi was treated, and as far as the effects that the events have had on the soldier who was testifying about them. From the LA Times article, it seems to me that Staff Sgt. Michael A. Hensley clearly deserves some serious punishment, and that Sgt. Evan Vela was simply following orders that he should have ignored.
Any way you look at it, this is another distressing and sad story to come out of Iraq.Army Spc. Jorge G. Sandoval, the first of 3 soldiers in the "baiting" trial,... more

The Supreme Court ordered a stay less than 2 hours before Texas inmate Carlton Turner Jr. was set to be killed by lethal injection. They did not give a reason for the order, but Turner's lawyers had linked his case to that of 2 Kentucky inmates arguing that the series of injections used in executions violate the 8th Amendment against cruel and unusual punishment. The Court did not stop the execution of another Texas man earlier this week that took place only hours after the decision to hear the Kentucky case on the legality of lethal injections was announced. The Supreme Court ordered a stay less than 2 hours before Texas inmate Carlton Turner... more

The church says finding "prophet" Warren Jeffs guilty is just another sign of government prosecution of their religion.
The government says religion isn't a blanket excuse that can be used to justify abusing kids or otherwise breaking the law.
I vote with the government on this one. The church says finding "prophet" Warren Jeffs guilty is just another sign... more

GM and the United Auto Workers union reached an agreement last night to end the strike. The deal still needs to get approval from the SEC and ratification from the union members, but given the cheering crowds when the union president announced the deal, it doesn't seem like that's going to be a problem. Union president Ron Gettelfinger said he felt that the strike that began on Monday morning really forced the issue and helped to bring the two sides to an agreement.GM and the United Auto Workers union reached an agreement last night to end the... more

After years of declining to do so, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case that argues that the lethal injections used to carry out executions in 37 of 38 capital punishment states are unconstitutional. The case points to executions in Ohio and Florida that took as long as 2 hours to carry out as evidence that the method violates the 8th amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishment.I covered 2 executions in my radio days, and most states use the same procedures that California does: a series of 3 injections. The first is 5 grams (more than 500 times the amount used in surgery and considered a lethal dose) of a sedative or anesthesia. Next comes a lethal dose of a muscle relaxant or paralyzing agent that should stop breathing by paralyzing the lungs and diaphragm. That's followed by a lethal dose of potassium chloride, which induces cardiac arrest. It all sounds pretty unpleasant to me.After years of declining to do so, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case that... more

Representatives from the United Auto Workers Union say the number one issue in the first nationwide strike against the U.S. auto industry since 1976 is job security, followed by protecting benefits for employees.
I covered a LOT of strikes while working for KPFA, and right on cue, GM has said they are disappointed in the union's decision to strike.
Both parties are scheduled to return to the bargaining table today.Representatives from the United Auto Workers Union say the number one issue in the... more

The DEA has made 124 arrests across the country and nabbed 11.4 million doses of steroids in their biggest 'roid raid ever. They also seized 500 pounds of raw powder from China, who the feds are saying really stepped up to help in the investigation.
But if people want to get strong fast, they don't use steroids anyway. Wasn't it flax seed cream that Barry Bonds likes to rub all over?

The president of the university has come under fire for allowing Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak, but he defended the choice saying it's important to learn how your adversaries think, reason, and operate. I am loathe to give someone who denies the holocaust a microphone. But then again, no one is forcing anyone to go and listen to him. And it probably will be interesting, if only to hear exactly how mis-guided and totally nuts he is from his own mouth. The president of the university has come under fire for allowing Iran's President... more

Apparently Jesse Jackson thinks so. Why? Obama's reaction to the Jena Six controversy. Isn't Obama half white? So wouldn't that be okay to act white? How does one act white anyways? Politically I think it would be a hard situation to be in, to not alienate your voters. He (Obama) would be a P*** though if he did feel strongly one way or the other but did not say anything. Ahh such is politics. Apparently Jesse Jackson thinks so. Why? Obama's reaction to the Jena Six... more

Thousands descended on Jena, Louisiana today to protest the case against 6 black high school students who were charged with attempted murder after a school yard fight. Many people feel that the charges against the boys were racially motivated, and that the treatment the white students (and in one case, adults) involved in the various events prior to "the fight" received, from the legal as well as the school system, was much less harsh. The effect of today's rallies remain to be seen - it could sway the prosecutor to drop the charges, though he seems unlikely to do so, or it could make an already tense situation even more so when the town is left to itself again in the coming days.CNN has live video of the scene where you can see tons of people milling around. They also have a fairly awkward interview with one of the mom's, her charged son standing beside her unable (legally) to say a word the whole time.Thousands descended on Jena, Louisiana today to protest the case against 6 black high... more

The fine print:1. You can only get shows within a week after first airing2. The downloaded files expire a week after the show's first airing3. The files have commercials that can't be skipped4. You can only get the shows via NBC's software, which right now, only works on Windows PCs (they say a mac version is coming soon)5. The videos probably won't play on your iPod (NBC is pissed at Apple over iTunes pricing)6. They're only free through the middle of 2008 when NBC will start charging in an effort to compete with iTunesMy thoughts: 1, 2, and 3 are a little annoying, but whatever. When they get the mac version out, 4 is a non-issue. 5 is not smart on NBC's part. My unscientific guess is that 2 out of 10 people don't use an iPod, and that might be generous. Not making the videos compatible with iPods could severely limit their customer base. And 6 is just going to piss people off. Having to pay for something you used to get for free is annoying.
