It’s common knowledge that living in a city as large as New York can be chaotic, and the laws meant to provide order and protect citizens can be beyond confusing. Wouldn’t it be helpful to have a user’s guide for navigating key NYC laws? Artist/graphic designer Candy Chang is doing her part to help make tenants’ and vendors’ rights more understandable for the people they affect.

Sheriff Tom Dart of Cook County, Illinois says he will not have his deputies carry out eviction orders on tenants who have paid their rent to property owners who haven't paid the mortgage to the bank. It boils down to a surprise attack on a renter who in most of the cases has no idea that the property is in any jeopardy.
The courts and the state legislature were asked to first do some basic investigation or record searches to find out if the inhabitants of these foreclosed properties were seniors, disabled or otherwise disadvantaged citizens. Such an action could possibly connect them with a social service agency before any legal action was taken, giving them a chance to make other living arrangements. The county appealed for such an action but it seemingly was squashed by the lobbyists for the banking industry.
"We won't be doing the banks' work for them anymore," Dart wrote. "We won't surprise tenants with an eviction order intended for their landlord."
Kudos to Sheriff Dart. Men and women of valor who place doing the right thing over their own self interest and actually care about someone else's well being are in short supply.
I was beginning to think that this kind of honor was now only something we saw only in the movies or heard from behind a podium. Let's hope he has started a trend. I want to see him invited to every Sunday morning pundit show.

'The big one' will hit someday here in San Francisco. But, all it takes is an average Sunday for my building to start falling apart. My neighbors hang out on these stairs often. Glad they weren't there when the soffit dropped three eight ft boards from three stories up. No, I didn't catch it happening, but this is minutes after.
Our building is rent controlled, and the land lord & management company don't take care of it at all. In fact, they're doing just about everything they can to get us to move out so they can rip it down & build more expensive condos.
I filed a complaint on Monday & the city supposedly sent an inspector to have a look on Tuesday. No word beyond that yet.
Stand up for your tenants rights!

Now there are two kinds of bugs you definitely don't want in your flat: bedbugs (gross) and surveillance bugs (what?!?) Two Dublin landladies have to pay more than 100,000 for bugging their student tenants' flats. When students became suspicious and complained they were quickly evicted. Now they're being compensated for this major invasion of privacy. As if it's not enough to be caught on CCTV all day long, they were being spied on at home? I'm going home to check my flat!!Now there are two kinds of bugs you definitely don't want in your flat: bedbugs... more
