Mauricio Fernandez was being sworn in again as mayor of San Pedro Garza Garcia, when he announced to his cheering crowd that the body of his rival, Black Saldana, was found in Mexico City today.
This has naturally led to speculation that Fernandez was involved in the death as his rivals body blind-folded barefoot body was not discovered until some three and a half hours later.
2000 Census estimate - 8,008,278 people living in NYC.
2000 Census estimate of people under 18 - 24.4% of total population
24.4% X 8,008,278 = 1,954,020 under 18 (rounded up)
8,008,278 - 1,954,020 = 6,054,258 people who are eligible to vote in NYC
6,054,258 - 1,063,776 = 4,990,482 people who did not vote... IF THIS WERE THE YEAR 2000
But it 2009. So lets try this all again with a educated guess.
2008 Census estimate - 8,363,710 people living in NYC
Considering growth lets say 25% of the total population is under 18
25% X 8,363,710 = 2,090,928 people are under 18 (rounded up)
8,363,710 - 2,090,928 = 6,272,782 total people who did not vote.
So my original math (7.2 million if you didn't see it) is off by about 1 million. Remember that these are estimates from the US Census Bureau. Close to 6.3 million people is a very very large number.
An estimated 6,272,782 people did not vote in Tuesdays election. This means around 18% of the city showed up at the polls. 82% of a city of 8.3 million people did not vote.
For a title and position as powerful as mayor, of New York City no less, shouldn't more people have voted? Does this number shock anyone? How do we get people to the polls? How do we educated people on the importance of voting?UPDATE

Both of the most-watched Governors races went to GOP candidates: Virginia and New Jersey. New Jersey is being seen as a blow to the Democratic Party at large since Obama personally came to campaign for Jon Corzine.
Consolation prize for the Dems: They won New York's 23rd Congressional District, beating out the Sarah Palin-backed Conservative Party candidate. (posted by current89)
New York's mayor had a surprising struggle for reelection. It ended up being 51 to 46 percent, far tighter than Bloomberg's campaign had been expecting. Why? Apparently low turnout and a strong anti-Bloomberg vote. Did Gawker almost swing an election?
And bad news for supporters of gay marriage, Maine voters overturned legislation allowing same-sex couple to get married in the state.
A big shout-out to current89 whose election day post yesterday served as our center for info and commentary.
Any other races out there catch your eye? Let us know.
Well, not necessarily for everyone. It's not a presidential election year (obviously) and not a midterm election year for Congress, but yes there are a fair number of elections going on tomorrow. Lots of local races and a few bigger ones. Here are some of the highlights on the national stage:
NY-23: A little corner of New York state you've probably never heard of is attracting big attention for its special Congressional election. Why? First, because commentators think it could be a bellwether for the 2010 midterm elections. Second, because it suddenly got real crazy. There was a three-way race between a moderate GOP incumbent, a Democrat, and a Conservative Party candidate. Then suddenly Sarah Palin swooped in and endorsed the third party candidate, and it ignited a firestorm about tea party conservatives in the GOP. So much so that Dede Scozzafava, the GOP candidate, dropped out. What does it mean? What does it meeeeean? We'll let the politico-blogo-sphere sort it all out after we get the results.
New York City Mayor: New York is voting on their mayor. Incumbent mayor Michael Bloomberg had the law changed so he could run for a third term, and seems to be strongly in the lead. Except Gawker anti-endorsed him. (Ouch).
Maine on Gay Marriage: Last May, Maine's legislators legalized same sex marriage. Now its voters will decide whether or not to repeal it. Boy wonder statistician Nate Silver gives the vote to repeal "5-to-2 underdog" odds.
New Jersey's Governor: Why should you care about who's governor of the Garden State? Well according to the AP: it's "...a campaign being billed as a vote on President Barack Obama's popularity." Democratic governor Jon Corzine is fighting to keep his seat as his Republican opponent has fared well in the polls. Will a GOP win foretell doom for Obama's efforts? Again, we'll let the politico-blogo-sphere sort it all out after we get the results.
What else is going out there? Here in San Francisco we're having a municipal election with two uncontested candidates and a few local propositions.
How about where you live? Any local races out there that could be resonant to the rest of the country?
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has dropped out of the California Gubernatorial race, citing an inability to keep up with the work load.
"With a young family and responsibilities at City Hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to - and should be - done,"said Newsom in a statement from his campaign office late Friday afternoon.
This leaves the Democratic ticket wide open.
God help us if we end up with that ebay woman (ed.)
Miami Mayor Manny Diaz says every home in Miami-Dade gets a ``smart meter'' to allow customers to monitor their usage of electricity and help them to slash their electric bills.

(Wellford, SC)—Wellford Mayor Sallie Peake is rescinding her controversial “no chase” policy, saying she is following the example of an embattled South Carolina congressman.
“I’m like Joe Wilson,“ says Peake. “He was forced to apologize. I’m changing (the policy) not because I want to, but because I’ve been asked to.“
Three weeks ago, Peake sent a memo to all Wellford police officers which says: “As of this date, there are to be no more foot chases when a suspect runs. I do not want anyone chasing after any suspects whatsoever.“
She said she did this because officers kept getting injured during chases, costing the small town too much money in insurance.Updated September 24, 2009

The mayor of Hampstead, Maryland, will replace the town’s municipal flag with the Gadsen flag on September 1, a press release reports. Newly elected mayor Haven N. Shoemaker ordered the switch through executive order to protest anticipated cuts in state funding to local governments including Hampstead.

“We have the so-called stimulus which is nothing more than an unprecedented issuance of debt. We have ObamaCare. In Maryland, we have a complete failure by Governor O’Malley and the Legislature to balance the state budget,” Shoemaker said. “The $3.8 billion in federal money sent to Maryland was wasted on pork barrel projects and social program spending rather than on rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure. Now the State is dumping their failure of fiscal leadership into our laps.”
Shoemaker hopes other mayors will follow suit. “Maybe this won’t amount to anything. Maybe other local governments will decide to join us. In any event, the people in Hampstead will know that there is still one level of government left in America that is of the people, by the people and for the people.”

The flag was designed by and is named after American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden. The use of the timber rattlesnake on the yellow flag as a symbol of the American colonies can be traced back to the publications of Benjamin Franklin. In 1751, he made the first reference to the rattlesnake in a satirical commentary published in his Pennsylvania Gazette. It had been the policy of Britain to send convicted criminals to America, and Franklin suggested that they thank the British by sending rattlesnakes to England. During the Revolutionary War, the snake image was used as a symbol of the colonies. Since the Revolution, the flag has seen times of reintroduction as both a symbol of American patriotism and as a symbol of disagreement with the government. The mayor of Hampstead, Maryland, will replace the town’s municipal flag with the... more

A MAYOR has stepped down after being accused of breaking into women's homes and parading around in their bra and knickers.
Ian Stafford, 58, was charged with three counts of burglary after women told police their bras and knickers had vanished.
One worried woman is said to have installed a secret camera in her bedroom and when police saw the footage they saw a semi-naked man going through her drawers.
The video showed the man putting on her knickers and performing a sex act. Sources said that police had recovered a haul of underwear.
Stafford resigned as a councillor immediately after his arrest. He was elected Mayor of Preesall and Knott End, in Lancashire, England, four years ago.

Residents in Preesall, Lancashire were stunned when police arrested their mayor while investigating the theft of large quantities of ladies underwear
Female residents in the small seaside town complained to police that their knickers kept disappearing from their homes. One woman was so upset about it that she installed a CCTV camera in her bedroom.
The camera caught the town's mayor, 58 year-old bachelor Ian Stafford, semi-naked, going through her, ahem, drawers and "putting on her underwear and then performing a lurid sex act."

"I just watched San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's June 11, 2009 interview on Al Gore's internet Current TV, about what Current called his "Green Ticket," with a capital "G," gubernatorial campaign, even though the San Francisco Green Party ran Matt Gonzalez against Newsom in the 2003 mayor's race, and, has not endorsed [Gavin Newsome], to say the least.
One of the Mayor's first claims was that he'd finally taken action, that day, to stop the "trash poachers" who pluck redeemable bottles and cans out of the big blue cans labeled "recycling," before the city's trucks can come to pick them up off the sidewalks on garbage pickup days.
No wonder he's trying so hard to hike police and sheriff's budgets while slashing human services to all the most vulnerable people in San Francisco, including the trash poachers, many of whom are homeless.
Did he mention:
1) The pressure on California's ban on nuclear power power plant construction?
2) The pressure on California's ban on new offshore oil and gas drilling?
3) Assembly Bill 656, the proposed oil and gas severance tax to fund higher education, with emphasis on the science and technology of renewable energy?
4) California's hypocritical, polllution exports to the native Southwest, in the form of contracts for coal-fired power, purchased on the Southwest Grid, and, to Baja California, in the form of LNG Terminals and pipelines bringing natural gas to Southern California, and, possibly, in the future, in the form of LNG Terminals and pipelines in Oregon, California's less wealthy, and, mostly rural, northern neighbor, bringing natural gas to Northern California? Or, to Africa, Indonesia, aboriginal Australia, all of which host uranium mines, and natural gas wells which produce for export to California?"
5) The enormous quanitites of electricity, nuclear and hydroelectric power, most often in the Global South, required to smelt aluminum used to manufacture the electric cars that Gavin Newsom and Arnold Schwarzenegger both promote as the solution to global warming?
No, no, no, no, and no, though many environmentalists would say that pressure on the bans on nuclear power plant construction and offshore oil drilling, and, the oil and gas severance tax to fund renewables, are among the largest environmental issues in California.
Did he mention the environmentally destructive War on Terror, or the U.S. military, the world's largest consumer of fossil fuels, including coal-to-liquid (CTL) transportation fuel? Not on Current TV. And, if Gavin Newsom has ever said a word against the Iraq War, the Afghanistan War, the Congo War, or any other front in the perpetual War on Terror, I haven't heard it and don't know anyone else who has.
In 2005, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to fly the U.S. flag over City Hall at half mast, in honor of the Iraq War dead, of whatever nationality, but Mayor Newsom would not allow it."From the article:

Helen Zille has a sharp tongue and a short fuse, and she doesn't dodge a fight. In apartheid times she enraged South Africa's white rulers, and lately she has ruffled South Africa's black political establishment.
Having won plaudits as mayor of Cape Town, she is now leader of the main opposition and her province's premier — a striking example of democracy at work in a country that is ruled by blacks but leaves room for white politicians like Zille.
In the April provincial election, Zille won just over 51 percent of the vote to seize control of the wealthy Western Cape province from the African National Congress, breaking the ruling party's monopoly on power. In voting for the national parliament, her Democratic Alliance party's share rose to nearly 17 percent and helped deny the ANC its coveted two-thirds majority.Helen Zille has a sharp tongue and a short fuse, and she doesn't dodge a fight.
