You might think that for the inaugural entry on the Huffington Post, Mighty Movie Podcast might feature something that would serve as a friendly little hello -- a charming family film, say, or maybe something suitably patriotic to kick off the July 4th weekend.
But nooooo. Instead, we've got Los Bastardos, a spare and brutal survey of the suburban wasteland that finds two illegal immigrants (non-pros Jesus Moises Rodriguez and Ruben Sosa) staging a home invasion and finding that their hostage (Nina Zavarin) is too benumbed to care.
Director Amat Escalante doesn't try for hyperbolic horror here -- the nightmare purrs along in low key, which makes the scenario almost as unbearable, and the atrocities and violence, when they do happen, all the more indelible. It may not necessarily be the thing to sit down to following the family barbecue, but, trust me, what you'll experience is as incendiary as any backyard fireworks.
I reached Escalante by phone in Mexico, and we were able to talk a bit about baiting Lou Dobbs, growing up Mexican in Southern California, and casting migrant workers as your lead actors. You might think that for the inaugural entry on the Huffington Post, Mighty Movie... more

Once the ultimate globalization success story, the island of Saipan now faces one of the fastest economic collapses in history. After suffering a harsh history of military struggles as well as a temporary economic boom after becoming a U.S. commonwealth, the island now stands devastated. Scores of factories remain empty, rotting shopping centers litter the country, and former factory workers turn to the sex industry for survival. Adam Yamaguchi visits Saipan to document the rise and sudden collapse of a tiny piece of America.Once the ultimate globalization success story, the island of Saipan now faces one of... more

Three migrants died and 26 others were captured when a fishing boat trying to reach Florida ran aground on Friday at one of America's wealthiest locales, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Authorities searched the sea off Miami after some of the survivors said there could be more people in the water.
Most of the migrants said they were from the Dominican Republic, while four said they were Brazilian, the Coast Guard said.
The 30-foot (9-meter) boat ran aground off Fisher Island, a wealthy enclave just south of Miami Beach. Forbes magazine this month named Fisher Island the most expensive postal code in the United States with a median home sale price of $3.8 million.
Southern Florida is a frequent target for Cubans and Haitians seeking better living conditions in the United States. Many are brought by organized smuggling rings.
"Twenty-nine people have been accounted for. Three of them are deceased," Coast Guard Petty Officer Jennifer Johnson said.
She said some of the migrants had reached shore and were taken into custody by the U.S. Border Patrol and others captured at sea were being questioned on a Coast Guard ship.Three migrants died and 26 others were captured when a fishing boat trying to reach... more
BEIJING — Li Tianchao is an itinerant worker who has spent his adult life toiling long hours, living in bleak worksite dormitories and chasing the next construction job from boomtown to boomtown. A no-nonsense, weatherworn man, he is not quick to grouse.
But as he waited for a train to take him back to his hometown north of the capital, Mr. Li, 50, could not help but feel wistful.
“The Olympics have finally come to China, and I won’t even be here,” he said, lounging on a woven plastic sack stuffed with his possessions. He glanced up at the “Participate in the Olympics, Enjoy the Fun” banner above his head and shrugged.
Like thousands of others who packed Beijing’s main train station on Thursday, Mr. Li was prompted to leave town by a lack of work and an unwritten government policy encouraging migrant workers to clear out until the dignitaries and journalists have gone home. Fifteen Africans died while trying to reach Spain's southern coast in a small, overcrowded boat, Spanish officials told CNN.
Thousands of African migrants risk their lives each year, trying to reach mainland Europe in small, overcrowded boats.
Rescue teams located the craft late Wednesday off the coast of Almeria province and helped it ashore. Aboard were 33 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and a dead woman.
They told authorities that 14 others, including nine young children, had died en route and were dropped overboard.
The survivors included men, women and a months-old baby. It was the second incident in a week involving African migrants.

The More the Merrier, set in St. Katherine’s Docks, examines the impact of immigration. Through inspired argument and the story of one young Indian woman’s desire to stay in the UK, the film lyrically interweaves historical archive with shanty sea songs. It presents a uniquely pro-immigration case, and call to us all, to open our minds and our borders. New immigration laws in Britain could see foreign footballers having to hastily enrol in English lessons if they want to continue playing in the Premier League.
According to Sky, non-EU footballers "will be banned from playing for British clubs unless they can speak English," but will not be alone as they will be among groups restricted under the new rules.
The new immigration rules are being implemented in an attempt to reduce the amount of UK migrants every year by around 30,000
Booo. Could this be due to the expert's predictions of the the 1/3 population growth in the next 10/20 years? What does being English have to do with football anyway? You don't have to speak to play. The out spoken not for profit WORLDwrite which makes Global Equality non- negotiable is joining magasine Spiked to promote a new campaign to Open the borders and is calling on Current viewers to support this timely quest. As the British government launches its draconian 'points system' to limit immigration and releases reports which question the economic benefit of letting people into the UK, WORLDwrite is releasing a new short film entiled The More the Merrior which champions unfetterred Freedom of Movement for all.
This new short film, interwoven with compelling archive, provides a timely case for unfettered freedom of movement for all across the globe. Too many people? Too many immigrants? For The More the Merrier the answer is a deafening no.
Evocative sea shanty songs take us to St Katharine Docks on the Thames and set the scene. This was a landing and departure point for immigrants settling in the UK and emigrants heading off to the New World. Immigration and emigration represent striving for a better world, yet from the 1905 aliens act onwards the UK began to shut its’ borders. The film suggests that while attitudes to immigration have been de-racialised there has been more closure than ever before and situates today’s anti immigrant sentiment within a culture of limits.
The film incorporates inspiring arguments from the Battle of Ideas immigration debate and features Bruno Waterfield Brussels correspondent for The Daily telegraph who argues “anti immigration sentiments represent a closure of the historical imagination” and quoting American writer P J O’Rourke he points that if the whole of the worlds’ population moved to one place they would cover a space the size of former Yugoslavia at the same density as Manhatten and he says “Manhatten is a pretty good place to live.” Philippe Legrain author of Immigrants Your Country Needs Them explains internal migration outstrips migration overseas today and this has “not for example caused China to collapse.” Legrain ridicules the ‘points system’ and argues immigration controls today represent a form of global apartheid. Illustrating these points Sadhavi Sharma a young Indian student obliged to go home, explains why she wants to stay and has more friends here than in Bombay.
WORLDwrite Director Ceri Dingle explains:
“This is a positive pro immigration film, not a tragic story, not an exceptional case but a fresh appraisal of the debate with a much needed historical perspective. Cutting through the depressing low expectations we have for what is possible today, the title of the film says it all.”
The More the Merrier will be launched along with a further short documentary Cash Back (available on Current ) highlighting the role of remittances (monies sent by migrants and diasporas back to countries of origin) at the new Vibe Lounge, Brick lane, London E1 on Sunday 20th April at 6pm. Speakers will include Philippe Legrain, (Author Immigrants their country needs you) Claire Fox (Director Institute of Ideas) and a representative of Open the Borders – a spiked-online campaign.

**This film is now the revised version of Cash Back that we have made based on some of the great comments and suggestions below**
Shot in Brick Lane in the heart of London's East End, this film reveals the extent of remittances. This is money sent by migrants and Diasporas to friends, families and villages in some of the world's poorest countries. They don't wear their heart on their sleeve or a wristband to show they care and they go on sending money when the shocking TV images have faded. Remittances outstrip aid and foreign direct investment for many developing countries. There are no strings attached and as the film suggests, remittances better represent the aspirations of our peers globally than much of contemporary charitable giving and celebrity pleading to buy a hoe or a goat.**This film is now the revised version of Cash Back that we have made based on some of... more
