Israeli and Palestinian negotiators are under pressure from extremists on both sides who want peace talks to fail. Hamas - the militant Islamist group that rules the Gaza Strip and has publicly called for the elimination of Israel - claimed responsibility for the shooting deaths of four Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank shortly before the start of the direct negotiations in what was seen as an attempt to derail the talks. West Bank settlers, meanwhile, responded by resuming construction inside settlements, despite a building freeze.
Neighbors gather to mourn at a tent near the homes of the four Israelis from this settlement who were killed on the eve of the talks.

The Real News Network speaks to settlers, Palestinians, and experts to understand the process of land confiscation in OPT.
Over the weekend, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed the Israeli government's support of the settlement movement by planting a tree in each one of the three biggest settlement blocks in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Despite the Israeli government's support, funding, and approval of settlers, they are often presented in the media as in conflict with the state and the army. In this report, The Real News' Lia Tarachansky looks at this claim through a recent lecture by Shir Hever, an economist with the Alternative Information Center. A perfect example of the methodology Hever describes can be seen in the settlement of Kedumim which lies adjacent to the Palestinian village of Kaft Qadum. The Real News spoke to the village council of the Palestinian village and the associate mayor of the settlement about how they've expanded and the impact this has had on their lives.

The United States says Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank threaten any peace between Israel and the Palestinians -- yet it also encourages Americans to help support settlers by offering tax breaks on donations.
As Condoleezza Rice flew in on Monday for another round of peace talks, Israeli and American supporters of settlements defended the tax incentives, which benefit West Bank enclaves deemed illegal by the World Court and which the U.S. secretary of state has said are an obstacle to Palestinian statehood.
Pro-settler groups say they are entitled to the tax breaks because their work is "humanitarian", not political, and reject any comparison to Palestinian charities, some of which face U.S. sanctions over suspected links to Islamist groups like Hamas.
The full extent of tax-exempt U.S. funding for settlements is unclear because so many groups are involved and their spending practices are not always transparent.
But a review by Reuters of U.S. tax records found 13 tax-exempt organizations openly linked to settlements that have raised more than $35 million in the last five years alone.
Asked about the tax exemption, Rice spokesman Sean McCormack said such tax and legal issues were not the purview of the State Department. But he added: "Regarding U.S. policy on settlements, it's clear, it's the right policy to try to help bring about a political settlement between Israel and the Palestinians."
The Internal Revenue Service would say only that groups can qualify if funds go to "charitable, religious and educational purposes".The United States says Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank threaten any peace... more

NABLUS, West Bank, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Dozens of Israeli settlers clashed with residents of a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank on Saturday after a Palestinian stabbed a boy in a nearby Jewish settlement.
Medical officials said three Palestinians were shot and wounded by the settlers who entered the village south of the West Bank town of Nablus.
An Israeli military spokesman said a Palestinian, who infiltrated a Jewish settlement outpost in the West Bank, set fire to an abandoned building and then attacked a nine-year-old boy who had seen him and called for help.
The spokesman said the boy was lightly wounded and the army was searching the area for the Palestinian.

Zionist settlers set fire to Palestinian farms planted with olive trees northeast of Qalqilia district on Monday evening in an area called Abul Jud valley, locals reported.
They said that tens of citizens rushed to extinguish the fire with the help of civil defense squads, and noted that the quick action on the part of those citizens prevented the spread of fire.
Witnesses reported that the settlers assaulted farmers in the same area and opened machineguns to terrorize them while IOF soldiers escorted those settlers and fired teargas and rubber-coated bullets at the locals causing suffocation among farmers and citizens.
Meanwhile, IOF soldiers raided the Balata refugee camp east of Nablus city shortly after midnight Monday and kidnapped Jamal Al-Ayed.
Local sources said that the soldiers stormed the city and roamed its streets. They noted that the soldiers broke into and ransacked the home of Karim Issa at the pretext of searching it.
