The regime may fall? In Iran broken out again the protests in the streets, that never really stopped since the election in June, won by Ahmadinejad with many suspicions of fraud. These days the opposition took advantage of Shiite religious festival of Ashura, which commemorates the death of the grandson of Muhammad, Husayn ibn Ali, killed in 680 AD by the troops of the Caliph Yazid. In the current political climate the Iranian religious feast has a special meaning.

The opposition demonstrations were the latest to erupt in the Islamic republic since the grassroots outrage over the June presidential elections, when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won a second term as president. The election was seen as flawed and protesters took to the streets, with many killed and hurt by security forces and others arrested.Political conflict and public piety converged on tension-filled streets in Tehran,... more

Public officials have warned Shiites to limit their activity today, on Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram and the holiest day of their year-- and the embassy has warned Americans to stay away from proceedings in the old city.
