The Emergency government is still in control, the media is still shutdown. The protesters are still fighting the moves by Pervez Musharraf, and the police are still using batons and mass arrests to stop the opposition. And, no new date yet for elections, though Benazir Bhutto says she understands from inside sources (that she doesn't not provide or name) that elections won't happen for at least a year, while officials still say they will be delayed by 3 months max if at all.The Emergency government is still in control, the media is still shutdown. Adm. William Fallon, the head of the U.S. Central Command warned Musharraf (before he declared martial law) that doing so would strain relations with the U.S:
Adm. William Fallon, the head of the U.S. Central Command, met with President Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan a day before Musharraf's emergency declaration and told him that the United States did not support such an action, Fallon said.
"These actions put our relationship at risk," Fallon said.
He noted that the American military relationship with Pakistan is under review because U.S. legislative requirements could "come into play," potentially requiring cutoffs in aid.

Pakistani police launched a harsh crackdown today on the first street protests since General Pervez Musharraf assumed sweeping emergency powers last Saturday.
Police fired teargas and baton-charged a crowd of 2,000 lawyers at the largest protest in the southern city of Lahore.
Up to 1,800 people have been detained nationwide since the weekend, an interior ministry official said.
The prime minister Shaukat Aziz, responded to concern from overseas - including Britain - and insisted that elections scheduled for January would take place as planned.

"Pakistan will be under a state of emergency for 'as long as it is necessary,' Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said Sunday, a day after Pervez Musharraf suspended the constitution and widened his powers as president and military chief."
This does not sound good.

This is a really interesting piece from Bhutto about the declaration of Martial Law in Pakistan.
"CNN.com invited Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto to reflect on the tumultuous events since her return to Pakistan just over two weeks ago. As she submitted this opinion piece, Pakistan's General Pervez Musharraf imposed a nationwide state of emergency, a move she describes as a "horrific threat" to the country's future." Rice, speaking to reporters on a Mideast trip, said the U.S. will review aid to Pakistan, but indicated it would not suspend aid wholesale.
The U.S. has provided about $11 billion to Pakistan since 2001, when Musharraf allied his presidency with Washington after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
"Some of the aid that goes to Pakistan is directly related to the counterterrorism mission," Rice said. "We just have to review the situation. But I would be very surprised if anyone wants the president to ignore or set aside our concerns about terrorism."
The secretary, who said she had not spoken directly with Musharraf since the crackdown, denied charges that the Bush administration has "put all its chips" on Musharraf.
She also decried Musharraf's "extraconstitutional moves," including suspending the constitution, ousting the country's top judge and deploying troops to fight what he called rising Islamic extremists.
"I'm disappointed in his decision, sure," Rice said. "I think his decision sets Pakistan back in the considerable progress it made toward democratic change."

Since the return of Bhutto after her self-imposed exile and the controversial presidential election of Musharraf (opposition parties contest that he cannot be military chief and president), Pakistan has been plummeted onto the forefront of international news.
The situation continues to deteriorate. Honestly, this sounds like something out of Star Wars: Former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto is returning to the country she once led after a nearly decade-long exile. Musharraf's grip on power is loosening somewhat and she clearly sees opportunity.
Benazir Bhutto is the daughter of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, another former president and prime minister of Pakistan. Who was deposed in an army coup and hanged by his political rival.
And you thought U.S. politics was messed up.Honestly, this sounds like something out of Star Wars: Former Pakistani prime minister... more
