Marijuana may protect the brain from some of the damage caused by binge drinking, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of California San Diego performed brain scans on 16- to 19-year-olds in three groups: binge drinkers, binge drinkers who also smoke pot, and those with very little drug or drinking experience.
Binge drinkers showed damage in their white matter. But those who drink and smoke showed more damage than the control group in only three of eight areas of the brain. In seven of the areas, their brains were in better shape than the binge drinkers.
Researchers said in a news release from the Marijuana Project that the result was unexpected.
They said it could be that marijuana somehow stops alcohol from damaging brain cells.Marijuana may protect the brain from some of the damage caused by binge drinking,... more
Here's a sneak peak at the new anti-binge-drinking campaign video from the Home Office. It's in the same vein as their recent 'You Wouldn’t Do It Sober' campaign, but funnier, in a weird kind of way.

Now here's a creepy trend among young women. Apparently more and more ladies are forcing up the contents of their stomachs to make room for more alcohol! Girls, let's remind ourselves that purging is purging, and the idea that just puking up booze isn't the same as "true bulimia", it's not far off the mark. So if you're making the "I was wasted" excuse or know friends who are, it might be worth taking that into consideration. Binge drinking is a social problem, and coupling that with barfing does not suddenly make bulimia ok. I've certainly made myself sick to save myself from a wicked hangover, but never to carry on drinking! Do you know anyone who does this? Have you?Now here's a creepy trend among young women. Luckily, when I did this test from Fabulous magazine to see if I "think too much" I came out at a healthy mid ground... phew, not psycho after-all. Probably.
But I can totally relate to all the questions. I've often had to calm myself down with something along the lines of "he's not ignoring you on purpose, he's just busy watching Match of the Day which, despite it just being some men kicking a ball around, is very important to him..."

Yes guys it's yet another study, this one tells us that there is a genuine link between high IQ's and heavy drinking and that association is even more apparent in women than it is in men.
Research by Dr G. David Batty and colleagues at the University of Glasgow, published in the American Journal of Public Health, compared the mental ability scores of 8,170 British boys and girls at the age of 10 with their alcohol intake and any alcohol problems when they were 30. They found that whilst most of the clever subjects grew up to drink normal quantities, the chances of developing a drinking problems amongst the unusually bright increased 1.38 times in women and 1.17 times in men.
The timesonline try to come up with all sorts of interesting angles on this research, but what do you think it means? Is having a high IQ a curse?Yes guys it's yet another study, this one tells us that there is a genuine link... more
In a drastic move, church and police join forces in Wales in an attempt to stem rising binge-drinking.
In a letter to today’s Western Mail, the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, and Barbara Wilding, chair of the Wales Association of Chief Police Officers call upon drinkers to sign up to an online pledge vowing to cut back.
They will also be giving those who do cards to remind them of their promise and give them “support against peer pressure”.
Although this is said to be the first time that the church and police have joined together in order to tackle social problems, it is questionable whether an online pledge will have much of a hold over people who fancy that extra drink on a friday night. In a drastic move, church and police join forces in Wales in an attempt to stem rising... more

Despite the evidence that drinking alcohol causes physical brain size reduction, there is no data backing up the idea that drinking causes memory or brain function problems. As stated, the decrease in brain volume could be simply caused in the dehydration of tissues which alcohol is proven to cause. It would be interesting, but difficult, to create a study in order to determine the actual effects on the process of thinking that alcohol has on one's brain. Do you guys think that there would be a correlation between casual and/or binge drinking to intelligence, memory, and other brain functions?Despite the evidence that drinking alcohol causes physical brain size reduction, there... more
Jason Venezia, a 19-year-old Warwick Uni student, bet his friends £40 he could down three quarters of a litre of vodka by drinking one shot every 45 seconds.

Since the demise of Franco, young Spaniards have gathered spontaneously in large groups to drink in public spaces. The phenomenon is known as 'botellón' and the record number for such a gathering is 15 000 in Granada.
Recently, however, authorities have clamped down and young people are being fined 300 Euros for drinking in public. Some Spaniards see this as an attack on personal freedoms while others struggle to pay for expensive drinks in bars.
The compromise is to be relegated to a car park on the edge of the city...Since the demise of Franco, young Spaniards have gathered spontaneously in large... more
