Washington, DC -- Sixteen Members of Congress issued a letter yesterday to newly-seated Attorney General Eric Holder urging the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to act "swiftly to amend or withdraw" an order that significantly curtails medical marijuana research in the United States. For more than forty years, the federal government has held a unique monopoly on the cultivation of marijuana for medical research, significantly impeding studies on the therapeutic qualities of medical marijuana and the ability to bring it to market. In February of 2007, DEA Administrative Law Judge Mary Ellen Bittner ruled to end that monopoly by claiming that expanded medical marijuana research was "in the public interest."
The Congressional letter sent to Attorney General Holder was authored by John Olver (D-MA) and states in part:
Since 2001, Prof. Lyle Craker, an experienced botanist of medicinal plants and soils, has been struggling to obtain a DEA license for a privately-funded facility located at the University of Massachusetts to grow cannabis (marijuana) exclusively for FDA-approved research protocols designed to evaluate its potential medical value. Forty-five members of the House of Representatives and Senators Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, as well as a broad range of scientific, medical and public health organizations including the Lymphoma Foundation of America, the National Association for Public Health Policy, and the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation have all written to DEA in support of Professor Craker's efforts.

Repeating a promise made during the presidential campaign, the Obama administration yesterday vowed to stop the federal government from interfering in states with medical marijuana laws as soon as they can appoint a new head of the DEA.
“The president believes that federal resources should not be used to circumvent state laws, and as he continues to appoint senior leadership to fill out the ranks of the federal government, he expects them to review their policies with that in mind," White House spokesman Nick Shapiro told reporters.
Obama promised a hands-off policy on medical marijuana during his campaign, but since he took office the DEA, led by Bush appointed Acting Administrator Michele Leonhart, has nonetheless raided at least three medical marijuana dispensaries in California, each time seizing money and medicine, but making no arrests.
The administration’s renewed commitment to respecting states with medical marijuana laws follows thousands of phone calls to the White House, plus a flood of comments on change.gov, all calling for the President to make good on his campaign promise. Americans for Safe Access, the nation’s largest medical cannabis advocacy organization, greeted the statement with strong approval.
"Americans for Safe Access acknowledges President Obama's continued pledge to end federal interference with state medical marijuana laws," commented Caren Woodson, Director of Government Affairs. “We look forward to working with the President and his Administration to enact long-term policies that support safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research."
Meanwhile, Sarah Pullen, a DEA spokeswoman refused to offer any explanation for the raids. “I can’t get into details as to the probable cause behind the warrants,” she said. “Except for the fact that they’re dealing with marijuana, which is illegal under federal law.”
Perhaps the DEA dead enders were trying to throw down a challenge to the incoming President, lest he get any ideas about actually reforming our disastrous war on drugs. Or perhaps it was just an easy payday.
An employee of Beach Center Collective in Playa del Rey told the Los Angeles Times that DEA officers confiscated so much property that the dispensary would not be able to reopen.
“They took everything,” said the 32-year-old employee, who asked not to be named. “You name it, they took it – right down to the television. The computer, patient files, medicine, cash in the register – that’s it, we’re done. It’s just too bad. [Our patients] have epilepsy, cancer, MS, diabetes – two of our patients have one leg. They’re gonna have to travel a lot farther and go to places that aren’t as safe for them.”Repeating a promise made during the presidential campaign, the Obama administration... more

The Lake County Narcotic Task force on Wednesday seized marijuana and money from a medical pot collective in Clearlake Oaks.
The Alternative Solutions Collective was operating outside of California guidelines, according to Task Force Commander Norm Wielsch.
Inside the the collective, detectives found a honey oil/hash laboratory; 15 pounds of processed marijuana, $2,129 in cash; 2 pounds of hashish; and dozens of food items containing marijuana, he said.
A search warrant was served on the collective following a related raid in Middletown where detectives found a recently harvested indoor marijuana garden. They seized 48 pounds of dried marijuana and 80 pounds of unprocessed marijuana, Wielsch said.
Moeun Dam, 40, of Middletown, was arrested on suspicion of marijuana cultivation, he said. Daniel Clark, 22, and Caleb Hazard, 26, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to distribute marijuana and possession of a clandestine honey oil laboratory. Honey oil is a powerful extract of the cannabis plant.correction:

Marijuana has many possible medical uses. Positive effects are claimed for ailments such as cancer, AIDS, and glaucoma. AIDS can cause a loss of appetite known as "wasting syndrome", which can lead to drastic weight loss and weakness. Chemotherapy used in the treatment of cancer causes nausea resulting in an inability to keep down food. Marijuana's healing nature for these two illnesses is a result of its ability to increase a person's appetite as well as relieving nausea, allowing a patient to regain weight. Marijuana reportedly helps glaucoma patients by reducing intraocular pressure that can cause damage to the eye.Marijuana has many possible medical uses. The DEA smashed surveillance cameras and computers and threw cannabis medicine in large trash bags at the Venice Alternative Healing Clinic at 421 Rose Avenue. This was followed by a raid at the Marina Caregivers at 730 W. Washington Blvd. Marina Del Ray, and another at the Beach Center Collective, 310 Culver Blvd., in Playa Del Rey.
President Obama promised on the campaign trail to stop wasting Federal resources by ending DEA raids on medical cannabis dispensaries in states where it is legal. Apparently the DEA did not get the memo.
All in all, five Los Angeles medical cannabis clinics were targeted yesterday, including one doctor's office at 122 South Lincoln Blvd. also in Venice. This follows three similar post-inauguration raids in Lake Tahoe and Colorado on January 22nd of this year.
Medical cannabis activists are extremely frustrated at the apparent continuation of the Bush and Clinton administration's strategy of targeting legitimate dispensaries in states where the people have voted to make cannabis medicine legal. They are recommending that supporters of continued safe access to medical cannabis call the White House at 202 456-1111, asking Obama to call off the raids, and by sending an automatic email through the LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) website, or by going to Whitehouse.gov and writing an email.
UPDATE: This story made the front page of the Washington Times! More than 10,000 people wrote and called protesting the raids. The White House said it expects those kinds of raids to end once Mr. Obama nominates someone to take charge of DEA, which is still run by Bush administration holdovers.

Industrial hemp is gaining a lot of respect around the world for its amazing versatility and environmental benefits. Many companies are turning to hemp in order to make their products more sustainable and eco-friendly in general.
Unfortunately, widespread acceptance of hemp still has a long way to go. Many people are oblivious to the great benefits of hemp. Some (incorrectly) assume that it’s a drug (because of its close association with marijuana). The U.S. government has even made it illegal to grow hemp. This does not make it easy for those of us who are trying to do the right thing!
Hemp cultivation can provide many benefits for the environment. Also, hemp products can provide further environmental benefits when comparing them to products made from other fibers.
Here are some key reasons why hemp should become much more widely used than it currently is.
Growing Hemp
Here are some of the major environmental benefits of growing hemp:
* Fast and robust growth: Hemp grows extremely fast and can be grown in any climate, in any agronomic system
* No herbicides/pesticides required: Hemp can be grown with no (or little) herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, or other biocides.
* Suppresses weeds: Hemp is a natural weed suppressor due to the fast growth of the canopy. Actually, hemp is a weed. Because it grows so fast and densely, it blocks out sunlight to other weeds that are trying to grow.
* Improves soil structure: Due to it’s long roots, hemp replenishes soil with nutrients and nitrogen and helps control erosion of topsoil. Also, once harvested, any residue can act as an eco-friendly manure.
* Hemp produces lots of oxygen: Hemp produces the same amount of oxygen while it’s growing that it would use in carbon dioxide if burned as a fuel. Also, due to it’s leaf/root ratio (this can often be 10% roots vs 30% leaves), hemp can produce between 20% - 40% more oxygen than will be polluted.
* Cleans up pollution: Hemp can actually clean up toxins from the ground. This process is called phytoremediation. A good example of this is when hemp was used to help clean up the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site to remove radioactive elements from the ground.Industrial hemp is gaining a lot of respect around the world for its amazing... more

Middletown resident Moeun Dam, 40, was arrested after his home in the 21000 block of Highway 29 was searched at approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday. Detectives found indoor marijuana grow, where the plants had been harvested and were being dried.
Detectives found 48 pounds of processed marijuana and 80 pounds of unprocessed marijuana. The residence was prepared to grow more than 500 marijuana plants, according to the release.
Evidence found at Dam's home led the LCTNF and Lake County Sheriff's Office to serve a search warrant at the Alternative Solutions Collective in the 12000 block of East Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks, according to the release.
During the 4 p.m. search, detectives found a honey oil/hash laboratory and evidence that the collective was operating outside of state guidelines. Very sobering story. I am astonished it took this long for the fact he had a half-brother to float to the top of the media pool that is my daily swim. A year or more of campaigning and I never heard a word of it, but that's not important I suppose. Not as important as the questions it raises. Will Barack intervene to help his brother, especially now when the press has made such a big deal about his relationship with his Kenyan roots? And how will this affect his opinion on the concept of possession laws and how enforcing Draconian policies can cause such overbalanced suffering? Kenya has the right to enforce its own laws, obviously, and if George Obama broke them he's subject to their punishments, but it draws a parallel to possession laws in the US, "three strike" laws, etc. and what his Administration is going to do regarding the acceptance of cannabis and hemp in the USA. His is the perfect presidency to finally acknowledge the medical, social, economical and practical uses for cannabis & hemp and what perfect opportunity to address it while you're addressing the topic of your poor half-brother's arrest for possessing leaves & flowers of a PLANT.Very sobering story. I am astonished it took this long for the fact he had a... more

George ObamaI have heard that brotherhood is every man’s life and that blood is thicker than any known liquid. However, yesterday I trashed those suppositions when I met George Hussein Obama, the long lost brother of Senator Barack Obama who is eyeing the US presidency.
Senator Obama a wealthy American with roots in Kenya and even relatives here in Kenya should in-act be ashamed of ever attempting to become US president. It is disgraceful for what I encountered from the meeting with George Obama is way off from brotherhood and blood.
George Obama, a 26 year old man lives in Huruma estate in a dingy he calls a house. In fact its not a dingy but a single room with a foul stench of stale cigarette and fresh pot smoke.
